SYNOPSIS:
Jonah continues to recall the many memorable moments of his childhood spent with his best friend. Depressed, starved, sleep deprived, and possessing obsessive compulsive tendencies Jonah appears to enter a state of delirium in which his imagination takes on a life of its own.

COMMENTARY:
This single page took a little over 6 hours to produce, however I believe that this page is an outlier. There are two good reasons for this page to take significantly longer than other pages. For one, there is a lot more art on this single page than on the first two pages, a total of 8 different "panels" (in no particular order, readers can tackle them any way they like, much like Jonah's delirious state). The first page only had 3 and the second page had 5. Secondly, this isn't just any page. This is a very important establishing page for the whole story. It was critical to get the tone of the scenes and the appearance of the characters down correctly. A lot of story information is contained in these panels if you look carefully, but most of it will remain cryptic until more of the story unfolds.
I'm very pleased with how a lot of these turned out. Almost every picture of Jonah and Jonathan are really great. Jonah is frequently adorable/adorkable and Jonathan is often cute/cool. The scenes are nice and varied and the images communicate that this was by no means a one-sided relationship. Both boys seem to enjoy the company of the other unashamedly. I hope I have managed to capture the essence of the perfect boyhood friendship. This page probably would not have translated as coherently or as sincerely if I had just "drawn it". I had imagined the lives these two had spent together for hours on end (I also have a problem with obsessive thought patterns). This gave me ample material and even some narrative context for the images, but it also made me feel comfortable with the tone of their friendship. It's rare to see boys be so openly and consistently affectionate. I had to spend a lot of time with these characters in my own mind to feel their closeness was genuine and not forced. I hope that I have succeeded in giving the viewer a window into this world.
