"Momma... are we BAD?... Why didn't Santa come?"
*Sob*
"H-He's just so busy!!! He probably just forgot about us, baby..."

Things were hard for the Dog family. Dad was always away at work, and Mom did her best to pull in extra income with her side job. Still, the economy was rough, and the hardworking family still struggled each month to make their bills and put food on the table.
Mom was banking on some overtime credit at work, and give her poor children something to look forward to. Sadly, the store was shut down early due to an unexpected incident, and her overtime earnings would have to be delayed until after the holidays. Broken hearted, she went home with nothing to offer her two wonderful children. It was all she could do to hold back her tears and explain to her kids that Santa may have missed their house on Christmas Eve, but was more than likely going to make it back to their house later that week.

Though I didn't draw it, I had a little story montage in my head of my Lynx family stopping by shortly after on Christmas Day to give some gifts of charity, and more importantly, spend some time with the family to remind them that the holidays means more than what you get.
And before you ask, the stockings say the names of Lucas and Stanley, Stanley being the older boy.
As someone himself who grew up quite poor, I can say that holidays like Christmas are extremely bittersweet, and that often even getting a humble pair of socks can express volumes of love and sacrifice from someone who cares, moreso than any brand new XBox or shiny toy ever could.

I have a short weekend to Art tomorrow. I'm working on a short 6 panel standalone comic page, as well as more Ask My Character responses. I did this quick doodle sketch at work today, and I'm constantly thinking about you guys'n'gals. Thanks all for your outstanding patience, and your appreciation of my artwork.

Damn it. This broke my heart. I should not be 1) browsing this site at work, not 2) be crying at work from this. Makes you be thankful for what you have.

I am in tears as I write this. The back story, the sadness and disappointment on their faces just breaks my heart. I love how your art makes you feel something. You tell a story with your words and your comic that touches people. I love your work. You never disappoint.

I recall a Christmas from my childhood when my family was truly destitute. We had nothing. That year I received two Hot Wheels cars my dad had picked up at a toy drive for a few cents. And to me they were the greatest toys I'd ever had. I played with them for months. I even had one of them into my teen years.

I often find it sad how now presents and plenty are the main associations of what a good Christmas is supposed to be. On the contrary, when we had nothing, even a tiny bit was a feast for my soul. And even today I still appreciate the season for what it was meant to be, not commercialization and consumerism. A handmade gift from the heart is worth more than diamond jewelry.

Oh absolutely agree with you there. Never had any proper Xmas since we were well below the poverty line in my childhood. Has taught me at least some lessons on the value of things and the value of helping others.

man this hits close to home. i grew up diiiiirt poor. i do everything I can to make people happy on Christmas especially those that have less than I do. wish I could make them smile too. people always say santa ain't real but I never bought that. santa is more than one guy. he is an ideal. anyone who brings joy to others on Christmas for no reason other than they can and want to is santa.

I remember the Christmas when I was age 7...not quite 2 years after we came to the U.S.

My parents overslept, thus "Santa" didn't arrive by Christmas morning.
Mom told us, "Santa's sleigh broke down, and they should have it repaired by tonight".
So what we did was have Christmas and open presents on the 26th that year.

It reminds me the cartoon: "Somewhere in Dreamland" from 1936...

Love those oldies, had a compilation of them. The Spider Hotel, one where an inventor helps an orphanage of kids by pretending to be santa claus... The two peasant kids in the Dreamland cartoon were cute. :3

They are not just cartoons: they are much much more...even if every time I think about them, I can't help feeling sad.
