Having black eyed peas on rice as the first meal of New Year's Day has been a tradition in our family for generations.
It is said to bring good luck and prosperity throughout the coming year, and with the damage left behind by 2020, we could all use some good luck for 2021.
The dish is traditionally called "Hoppin' John", and another method of preparing the dish is to cook the rice and black eyed peas together in the same pot, though our we commonly serve the legumes laid on top the rice, which is said to still bring good luck just the same.
As for the year 2021;
Some folks seem to have a feel of euphoria of blind faith for the coming year.
While other folks have an Eeyore like dismal outlook on the coming year.
And there are those like myself, who are not overly optimistic though feel like "time will tell".
And always remember this...Despite the damage left in the wake of 2020, the year 2021 could actually be okay provided the coming year does not bring more of the following;
#1. No more new pandemic outbreaks costing many lives and requiring more lockdowns.
#2. No more major hikes in unemployment.
#3. No major hikes in homelessness, due to evictions and foreclosures.
#4. No more white police officers shooting unarmed black folks.
#5. No more riots, looting and burning across America.
#6. No more ANTIFA autonomous zones.
#7. No more U.S. involvement in middle east proxy wars...No wars actually.
#8. No food shortages. And stop hunger in 3rd world countries.
#9. No rampant inflation.
#10. Stop the rampant street violence like they have everyday in Portland and Chicago.
If those 10 things can be for the year 2021, possibly including some things I'm sure I haven't thought of, then 2021 could shape up to be a good year, and a far better year than what 2020 was.
2020 was a dumpster fire to say the least.
