This is in New Mexico in August of 1960.

The wolf piloting the KSWS News helicopter and the camera fox noticed a raccoon in peril just in time to rescue him from riding a rotted tree down to the ground.

Daddy Raccoon had taken on the job of cutting down a rotted tree. He chose to climb up into the tree to cut it down piece by piece because he was concerned about limbs snapping off and hitting the house if the tree was cut down whole.
While Daddy Raccoon was up in the rotted tree, the base of the tree began to break, thus the tree leaned over as he dropped his chain saw, and the ladder fell to the ground.
Mama Raccoon was terrified that her husband was going to get hurt. Raccoon Jr. was worried as well.
Every time Daddy Raccoon attempted to climb down, the base of the tree would make more popping and cracking sounds.

The helicopter news crew knew that by the time the county fire department could get there with a ladder truck, the tree would most likely fall with the raccoon still in it by then. So the wolf hovered the helicopter near the tree, and the fox instructed the raccoon to grab onto a runner.
After Daddy Raccoon grabbed onto a runner, the wolf hovered the helicopter away from the tree, then brought it down low enough for Daddy Raccoon to let loose and hop a safe distance to the ground.

Thus the day was saved for the Raccoon Family.

That's a skilled woof. Helicops are notoriously unstable. Even more with a big ol' raccoon hangin on one side. Kudos woof.

He's an experienced helicopter pilot. And he had experience in the Army during the Korean War flying a M.A.S.H. medical evaluation helicopter which was also a Bell, bubble cockpit, model 47.
He knew exactly when and how to tilt the rotor to compensate for the change in weight distribution.

Looks like the Bell 47?

It is. Radio and TV stations used them a lot back in the 1950s and 1960s.

The RNZAF used the military version until about 10 years ago.

Huh that looks like a bell 47
Recognize it from the show M.A.S.H though in mash it was a H-13C variant....

They're kind of hard to tell the difference actually.

Actually the H-13C variant had bubbles on the skids where they put the medevac stretchers to protect the wounded from the wind

"Hello? My raccoon climbed the tree and cannot get down!"

That would be a funny phone call. LOL.
Way out where that family lives, there probably is no phone service available.

The wolf and fox were already on their way to cover a news story, and noticed the raccoon in the tree as they were flying by. Seeing the ladder laying on the ground and the wife and son standing nearby clued them in as to what happened.

This is the first time I ever saw a news team make its own news with a rescue.  I wonder if this will be included in Part 42 of your Clarence Coyote story?

I thought about doing so.
