On November 13, 1864, the Battle of Bull's Gap comes to an end during the American Civil War. The battle began in Tennessee on November 11, 1864, as Confederate forces under the command of Major General John C. Breckenridge moved into the region from Virginia in order to push out Union forces and secure a source of food. Union forces under the command of Brigadier General Alan C. Gillem advanced to counter them, but were forced to withdraw and set up defenses near the town of Bull's Gap. The first and second day of the battle saw a stalemate between the rival forces as Confederate attacks failed to break the Union line both days. However, the Union troops were forced to withdraw on the third day despite no Confederate attack as the Union forces had run short on food and ammunition, withdrawing to Russellville that evening. The following day, Breckenridge and the Confederates pursued the retreating Union forces, forcing a rout of the Gillem's forces. However, Union reinforcements and deteriorating weather conditions forced Breckenridge to withdraw back to Virginia. While the battle had ended in a Confederate victory, such victory would be short-lived as the war would end in a Confederate defeat a few months later in May 1865.
