A new term for an old thing, a dumb thing. A 100% destructive thing. At the roots of it is a batshit philosophy that a bad person is someone who thinks what any particular reigning orthodoxy considers to be the wrong thing, instead of it being about what a person actually does. Simultaneous with this is the belief that all it takes for a person to be a good person is that they agree with the aforementioned orthodoxy. What do you think happens when you give people an instantaneous and easy pathway to be considered a good person, that can be presented merely by declaring it? You get people behaving like complete and total bastards, while insisting that they're angels, and you get decent, honest and upright people being considered scum, despite harming nobody. Great, innit! No, really, it's so absolutely stupid that to bear witness to it feels like having ones brains injected with pigeon shite.

Cancel culture is the worst. Its basically: "We don't want others to experience and accept other cultures, beliefs, food, etc." which is the opposite of what they stand for.
Its an oxymoron.

I wish this website had a rating system sometimes. I'd upvote or thumbs up because favoriting is a bit too public.

I know people who disagree with what a lot of people do, seeing cancel culture as a cancer in social media. It doesn't exactly exist in some circles (like the gaming communities), so people use that like a boogie man. "Don't fuck up or you'll get cancelled" if that were true, we'd have the real homophobes and dickwads actually cancelled... But it seems cancel culture only likes to ruin lives on hearsay of people who can't defend themselves. I know they tried to cancel a guy because two kids said he asked for nudes from them. He spent his money and time on lawyers and gathering evidence to refute it and actually crawled out of the 'cancel bin'. (Turns out the little shits lied about age, never sent him nudes, he never -asked- for them, they chose bits of the PMs to share on twitter, and both were in it together to 'ruin someone's life') This shit is what I consider the 'threat' in cancer culture. Misinformation and little shits who think they can ruin someone's life. It's no better than trolling someone, and it's definitely not getting 'justice'.

I think the idea is a bit ridiculous.

A celebrity I like did/said something terrible! I'll never support anything he does again! I hope he never gets work anywhere againand you have your friends that will likely follow suit, sheep mentality and all.

But it's not like a person can truly be cancelled or censored. Sure, they can lose money from a sponsor if they don't want to be associated with someone, but if someone made books or a movie or whatnot, they still exist and you could still buy stuff from them. Bill Cosby, Roseanne Barr and Kevin Spacey did bad/controversial things. It doesn't mean you can't buy stuff like the Bill Cosby Show, Roseanne and Kevin Spacey movies, despite what they've done. It's just that companies/groups don't want anything to do with people that have done bad things.

if i discover someones a piece of shit my buying of their products goes down, i dont need to tell people about it....it usually helps when their P.O.S. views infect their works and lower the quality and later products of a series i might have once enjoyed are a lot less enjoyable even without knowing about their views.

To be fair, I think it has its uses against corporations. It's when people take it to the next level that I think its a problem, use it against individuals, random bs that doesn't matter, anyone with a different opinion, it is an absolute cancer on society. Social media has made everyone believe they can bully and whine their way to get whatever they want, and when they don't they whine louder. It its the single worst thing that has come from the age of social media.

Cancel culture is the online equivalent of punching someone because you can't win the argument. Ironically, this is exactly why they deserve to be punched in the face.

This phenomenon was shawn brilliantly in the Black mirror. Give masses power to judge smn' life without trial is a bad idea and it's called Lynch law.

I'm not a big fan of cancel culture myself...However, I do have to say I'm surprised the lid wasn't blown off the "can-o-drama worms" with this one.

Besides the Cancel Culture, there another group out there that needs to be stopped.  The "Anti-Hate Speech" crowd.  I got banned from commenting on a comic I like simply because I said I was pro-free speech.  The artist had started an arc where someone had created a list of "unfuckable girls".  I had said that I don't like that list but the person who created it had a right to create it because he/she was stating an opinion.  The artist banned me for that even though he and I had had several nice exchanges about other pages and arcs in his comic.  My how quickly and easily one's opinion of someone else can change.

what is cancel culture? does it mean boycotting and stuff like that?
Vaahn

Seems nobody replied, so I'll have a go.

Cancel Culture is the authoritarian version of a boycott. But instead of saying "I'm not buying this, and neither should you", cancel culture says "I don't like this, so nobody should be allowed to buy it."

Its more personalized,

Usually its the redicule turned harassment of a person online, however most of the time it gives no chance for the person to change, or is about things that aren't really bad

NGL, I been canceled mutable times, its always for the stupidest reasons

Then someone whos actually violently racist won't have anything bad happen to them because for some reason they only care about things that don't matter. Its just weird

Worst part is canceling someone for something personal, or a sign of a serious issue, such as the "simping" of serial killers popular on tumblr (I mean people who do it not for attention)

The harassment isn't gonna get those girls help, its gonna feed into delusion

Overall, just stupid people online thinking they matter and seriously damaging mental health and overall their life

Fortunately, it's a circular firing squad - the more of their own they cancel, the smaller (and more rabid) their movement gets, and when enough people make it despite being "cancelled" (and we are at this point) they begin to slip into irrelevancy - and from a sword of damocles to an inconvenience for their employers. Would have been better if they had been kept out from the start, but alas, sometimes it takes a near-fatal infection to build immunity.

Seen many great people go down over it.  WORST one imho was tato.  The claim was "they drew risque art or minors" and also brought up some Nazi themed shitpost from 2007 as ammo (people forget, that was the humor back then, and it was OVER A DECADE AGO) when A) No they didn't, the stuff was very tame, B) The ones making those claims drew the same stuff then or do now, and C) One of the people involved posted a tweet of tato saying "I draw art for Trump supporters" as "evidence" alongside all the artwork, all of which was done after a journal where tato stood against cancel culture, proving it was politically motivated (especially since one of the front-runners of tato's destruction on Twitter openly has in every bio about them and numerous posts how much they hate Republicans of any kind).  tato did MANY charity streams, drew great art, and was an all-around wonderful person.  This nonsense cost them their online job, their irl job, and their home.  All because they weren't left enough (and they were very much left-leaning, just not enough for the woke mob)
