(1) pencil sketch male rabbit and wolf cop.

Seems Petroshka has caught the attention of a cop for "Loitering" ...

Petroshka: What seems to be the trouble officer, does my outfit not meet wid der town charter's 300 year old moral standards or am I jus lookin too much like a peach fer you to look the other way and pretend you dont already know what im out here fer?! What not enough bank robberies tonight so youz gotz to goes harassing me even though i been here every night since tuesday, or did yer squad just eat up all the donuts at the presinct and yer just out fer blood? So which is it officer, to which do I owe this pleasant little visit ...
Cop: Your Loitering ...
Petroshka: Is that the story we're going with tonight ...
Cop: Are you confessing to a crime ...
Perroshka: If you're that clueless to how things work out here in the real world based on how im dressed dont expect me to explain the birds and the bees to you. I aint confessing nothing. But if this were about loitering why dont you go harass that ol' tramp couple over there. They been there every night i have and i know fer a fact the ol' man takes a leak around the dumpsters--
Cop: move it or I'm taking you in for disorderly conduct...
Petroshka: uh huh, like I dont know what this is really all about ...
Cop: Listen fairy boy, I aint no fool and I know what your up to. I'm doing you a favor. Walk away now and I'll pretend I didnt notice you eyeing the male patrons of this upstanding establishment ...
Petroshka: A gas station is not by any stretch of der imagination an upstanding establishment, though perhaps fer yer lot ...
Cop: GIT!!!
Petroshka: (walking away talking to self) pfft ... what you some kinda commie ... dont belief in free enterprise capitalism? Guy cant make an honest buck fer a pack of cigarettes, damn fascist pigs free country my furry ass ...

This originally began as just a drawing of Petroshka's face because lately I felt I wasnt getting the character right and was just trying to practice. But I ended up really liking the expression and decided to turn it into a scenario with a cop.

Loitering means to hang around a privately owned area without permission or legimate business to be there. Like just sitting out on the curb of a deli without buying anything. It's discouraged because allowing it tends to attract either homeless people with no money (and therefore no legimate business), or people smoking, doing drugs, or just hanging out, potentially scaring off more well-to-do customers. Technically since any place of business is "private property" they have a right to say who they want hanging around or not, and "loitering" is the thing used to justify getting the law to get them to go elsewhere (where often they just have to loiter somewhere else since everything is private property or government owned, and if you have no private property of your own you literally have no where to go!).

He is a prostitute, yes. He's there looking for men who have sex with men "on the down low". These are men who are ostensibly "straight" (often married), will talk shit about "faggots", but behind closed doors would pay an effeminate man to do them "favors". They are always the dominant partner (which has always had more ability to "pass" than passive partners), and they are often all about the sex and refuse to show any affection towards a man. They aren't "emotionally invested" in the sex, unlike with women which they "fall in love with". This is how they maintain their "straight" identity. Obviously both the dominant and passive role are illegal regardless.

He can't explain the birds and bees to him. The cop can only look the other way if there is plausible deniability. Technically he doesn't "know" what Petroshka is up to (even though he does). He can't just jump to a conclusion based on how he's dressed and acts, he needs hard proof. So as long as Petroshka keeps his mouth shut he can walk, but if he says exactly what he's up to his ass is going to spend a night in jail (at least). So Petroshka is only being coy. He knows how the streets work.

And yes, he will probably just look for his "John" somewhere else or come back later. This is why Petroshka gets surly. He knows it's all just an act. It is just there to make the law appear like the "moral guardians" to mainstream society. In actual fact the law does very little to change the fact that these things go on all the time, are petty crimes, and frequently are looked the other way, or the cops are simply paid off (gay clubs used to pay the cops protection money to leave them alone before stonewall). It's all just a show. But still, the cop has the power here, what can Petroshka do other than complain about it? So he'll walk and grumble and go around the law rather than defy it directly.

By the way, Petroshka does not do this for pleasure. He probably hates it. He does it because it's an easy way to make a lot of money fast. It's better than begging for money. But it is dangerous. These men could potentially become violent if they feel their manhood threatened somehow by the situation (like say Petroshka gets too affectionate and they don't like it and threaten to beat the shit out of him). Petroshka may never want to admit it, but he has an emotional attraction to men, so dealing with these incredibly homophobic unfriendly men is not fun for him.

Yeah, i don't think there is a lot of people that do that kind of job because they like it ^^'
I would guess that his job of mechanic doesn't pay enough ? O_o

Also, i like your comment. Make me learn a lot ^^

Cool, I'm glad you find it informative.

Anyway, the thing you have to keep in mind with Petroshka is he is different things in different times and places. He is a drifter and he might even have several unrelated storylines (different continuities). It could be that this was before being aboard the USS Furtannia, so he might not have any knowledge of mechanics at this point. Petroshka is intelligent, well read, and a self-learner. So perhaps he picked up the plane mechanics stuff somewhere along the way when he was drafted. He had a knack for it (he would make a pretty flimsy soldier anyway).

But even if this was after there are a few possibilities. Let's think about Petroshka's character. Sure he might be intelligent, but he is also arrogant and abrasive where ever he goes. Likely he can't hold a mechanic job for long because he doesn't like being underneath a boss. He'd show up late or not at all and think he could call the shots. He'd be cocky to his boss because Petroshka "knows more about cars" and wouldn't want to listen. He might be rude and snooty to customers. In short, maybe Petroshka has a hardtime keeping a normal job because he can't be bothered to behave himself. Talent is always a must. You need to be able to actually do the job to have the job. But people skills matter too. No matter how good you are at something ... if you are enough of a nuisance to your boss they'd rather deal with a compliant but less skilled worker than the most talented one who is a total pain in the ass and never listens to what they are told. Some people say it's "not what you know but who you know", but I think this saying is pretty stupid. Who is going to care to "know you" if you don't know anything? It's what you know AND who you know. Or more accurately "what you know AND how you interact with people" (the better you are with people the easier it will be to get to "know" someone, and have them care to get back to you). I think you'll find that that advise is far more sound. The normal saying doesn't actually explain how you get to "know people" (that are important), but again it's a combination of being useful to them and polite.

(sorry went into a bit of a rant there. Anyway, you can see why Petroshka might have a hard time holding a job for long).

This is a nice "rant". And quite true ^^ Even if i would had that being polite isn't enough, you need also to be a little charismatic, at least enough no make a good impression....and lasting...

true true. I think the important thing to remember about sayings is they can never apply universally, they always are applicable in limited situations. So it's not necessarily about a saying being "right" or "wrong" but understanding it's not always true and then knowing when it's worth applying. The "who you know" bit is most relevant to people who are already part of the "club" (people who are already rich). Nepotism is a thing. But the point is ... this doesn't help people who aren't already part of the club. It might be worth knowing whose worth knowing ... but unless you are already someone important they are not going to be interested in you. Thats where the having something to offer and having good people skills comes in. So yeah, this saying isn't as useful as the people who spew it pretend it is. I find it tends to be people who don't have much to offer in terms of skills who think they can skip that step by just "knowing" the right people. Like I said, you either already have those connections or you don't. The idea that you are just going to shmooze the right people is silly. People who are rich know that a lot of phony people are going to try to "be their friends" for obvious reasons. If all you are looking is to get something out of someone (with nothing to offer) ... well they are going to lose you fast. So again, while it is "who you know" it's "how you get to know them" that is ultimately the more important lesson here.
