The sad thing is, it really isn't just a joke from the Simpsons, the Pinto was notorious for bursting into flames/exploding in crashes due to the really bad design of where Ford placed the gas tank.

I drive a Ford Crown Victoria and when you hit the brakes on that boat, you ain't coming back up until a complete stop. Non-ABS equipped cars are even worse because the brakes keep full pressure on the front wheels. Have you ever seen retro Motorweek videos? That's what I'm talkin' about.

I found out what made the gas tanks in those Pintos explode. The gas tank is next to the rear bumper, and the carrage bolts holding on the bumper protrude beyond the nuts. When a rear end collision happens, the bumper is shoved against the gas tank and the gas tank is punctured by the bolts, and the sparks made from steel striking on steel ignites the gasoline fumes. Had the gas tanks been made of ABS plastic like the ones now days, explosions would have been less likely to happen as the steel against steel sparking would be removed from the equation.

As the few know pintos are known for exploding when they are hit with enough force to knock the cargo compartment into the back seat when those would blame ford for where they put the fuel tank. In other cases GM full sized pickups built between 1973 and 1987 are also known for exploding when they are hit hard in the sides. With the few know the LTD never came from the factory with a manual gearbox when it wouldn't stop those from doing an automatic to manual conversion when the LTD built in the late 1980's may have been built with ABS when a panic stop wouldn't have put a dent in the pinto's rear bumper.
