May, Golden Week and Children's Day!
Typically, Children's day used to be simply Boy's Day, whilst a day for girls was placed on another point in the year.
However, this was changed in 1948, the name of the holiday was changed to Children's Day, as well as the other day for girls, removed.
Today, Children's Day is known as a day to focus on family, as well as give appreciation to parents.
The common icons of the day are known as Koinobori, or simply Flying Carp, or Carp Streamers. Typically in a default fashion of a Black or dark carp at the top, Red or similarly coloured as second, and a third, smaller, Blue or similarly coloured carp.
This is said to represent the Father, the Mother and the Son, as a homage to the original day. Although, one can customised the Koinobori to befit your family. So, after Father and Mother, the carp are coloured and aranged as per sex and age, going downwards until the youngest is displayed.
The public holiday is held on the 5th of May, annually, as well as is a part of Golden Week.
This is part five to the initiative project, "Twelve Month Holidays" [Japan].
