The setting is in New Mexico during a late July evening in the year 1960.

Elias Ferret is hoping he can get a ride before a severe approaching thunderstorm hits, as he makes his way north along Highway 54 toward Santa Rosa.
Coming from Vaughn, which is to the south, the glow of headlights of an approaching car can be seen a few miles away. Elias is hopeful the driver of that car will stop and offer a ride...A storm like this one is a storm no one would want to be stranded in.

Pics 3 and 4 show both north and south views.

Yeah, I picked that up. But still once is too many but it molds you, probably too much at once for anybody and in my book those who don't act all super tuff are the ones who get through the best... at least I grew up on legends like that.
