I haven't watched the leaked episode so I'll be catching it in a bit when it actually runs on Tha Hub.
I hadn't drawn Rarity's mane and tail before and had the worst trouble with it at first. I hated that mane. Now after starting to see how it works and drawing it I really like her mane. The design is beautiful and I like how it came out both in lineart and in color. I think I'm beginning to really 'get' G4 pony proportions too. I tried to do some shadows while keeping the mostly flat cell shading style of the show so hopefully it looks okay.
I've drawn Spike a little taller and more mature looking than he usually is in the show. In sketches their heights just didn't mesh very well for a romantic kiss without Spike standing on a box. I like to think he'll grow up somewhat like he appeared in Cutie Mark Chronicles instead of his brief maturity in The Secret of my Excess. I just love drawing his tailspike in three dimensions.
This is a larger pixel size than I usually do for fanart. The file with all layers ended up about 117 MB. It's not that complex, just big.
I'm convinced that both his magical growth in Cutie Mark Chronicles and his greed-inspired growth spurt in Secret of My Excess are abnormal, not indicative of the normal progression of dragon growth. He will probably grow in cunning and intellect as he approaches the size of the dragon from Dragonshy, and with Twilight's guidance will not allow greed to overtake his better judgment again.
(There seems to be a trend with emotions taking over a character's entire being in MLP:FiM. From the mane cast's "crazy moments" eg. Party of One, The Best Night Ever, Lesson Zero, to Spike's greed-fueled rampage, to Luna's bitterness and jealousy turning her into an entirely different person for a thousand years...)

That's true. IT does seem to be a running theme in the show. With Spike's self-image as a square-jawed hero in Dog and Pony Show it makes me wonder if he might become something like that too. Hopefully a bit more draconic. The one transformation I'm hoping he could reach is sprouting wings.

I've always wondered about that. Can dragons and ponies cross in Equestria? If so would the hybrids look like those critters in the Shrek movies? If they can't would they raise little ones by proxy? I imagine Spike would do most of the work in either case.
