TUESDAY, JUNE 14TH

Al, Marge and the cubs, as well as just about everyone else in Torrance County, had heard of the trial the day before for the Pitbull Brothers, Biff and Richie, and for their crony, Gaston Pitbull. Everyone agreed that the 45 days they got from the plea bargain as a result of pulling the school fire alarm for kicks and giggles was getting off pretty lite...considering the three pit bull delinquents could have gotten up to three years for that little stunt.
Just before Al left for work that Tuesday morning, Jed commented, "When Garth Raccoon and his friends were in jail yesterday for throwing those water balloons at cars on highway 41, he said that he saw Biff Pitbull".
"Yea", said Rex. "And I heard Biff was bad mouthing Judge Douglas Fox, and saying the things he wanted to do to him".
"And Ryan Lynx said that he heard what Biff said was really bad too", Clarence added.
"That young pit bull doesn't have much sense", Al said about Biff. "Or his brother...And that goofball that hangs out with them too".
"Judge Fox gave those three a really big break by agreeing to only 45 days", said Marge. "And it seems like that wacko can't see that".
At that point, it was enough said at breakfast around the dining table about the three pit bull delinquents...The members of the family were now focused getting that 2nd car they've been needin...a 1960, Plymouth, nine passenger station wagon.
"Dave Pine Martin is back from vacation", Al said to Marge. "What do you say we go to see him when I get off from work this evening?".
"This evening would be as good as any", Marge replied.
"WOW! We getting our station wagon tonight?!", Rex asked.
"Yeahh! Another new car!", Donna proclaimed.
"Depending on what the dealership has", Al said to Rex. "They might not have the one we want".
"And if that's the case?", Clarence asked.
"There are certain items I want it to have", Marge said to Clarence. "If that's the case, we'll have Dave locate one for us the way I want it from another dealer".
"And if another dealer doesn't have one in stock, we can get Dave Pine Martin to have the dealer order one from the factory special made", Al added.
"You mean like...order a car that hasn't been built yet", Jed mentioned.
"If it comes to that", Al said to Jed.
"If need be, I'd rather wait on one yet to be built if it means getting the car I really want", Marge agreed.
After everyone finished breakfast, Al and Marge hugged and kissed as Al left for work...Al left for work early that day so he'd have enough time to stop by at the bank in Vaughn to draw enough money from the account for the car.
The cubs went out into the neighborhood to play with the other cubs. There was no school at that time being it was summer vacation.
Later that morning, Marge Coyote got Frank and Wanda Coyote to give her and the cubs a ride to Santa Rosa in their '55 Chevy station wagon. There was some grocery items Marge wanted that the W. M. Hindi Store there in Duran didn't have...Hence why a 2nd car was needed.
The teenagers of Frank and Wanda, Jerald and Dotty, didn't come along, as they were out and about doing their own things. Along with Frank, Wanda and Marge, were Frank and Wanda's eight year cub, Cheryl...and the cubs of Al and Marge; Jed, Rex, Clarence and Donna...Needless to say, Cheryl and Clarence sat on the back seat of that '55 Chevy wagon, snuggled up as lovers to each other, despite of the fact that Cheryl and her family now know that Clarence is from a future day and time.
As Frank drove along, he even commented to Marge, "I see our daughter and your little time travaller are still little lovers".
"So I've noticed", Marge replied.
"Well, Frank. At least they're enjoying each other's company while Clarence is still with us", Wanda added.
Coming into Vaughn from the south, passing by that vacant stretch of land off of Highway 54, where Clarence's home and biological family will be 58 years in the future, still always seemed surreal to Clarence...It just felt so strange not seeing that double-wide there he use to know as home in 2018.
Leaving Vaughn heading north, Clarence still thought of how he had known the Santa Fe Railroad crossing for Highway 54 as being a railroad overpass in 2018...And there were times it would still seem different to Clarence that the Vaughn Municipal Airport didn't yet exist.
Once they left Vaughn, it was only a little while longer before they reached Santa Rosa.
At the grocery store there, Marge was able to get the items she wanted to get.
Wanda and Frank also did shopping as well...After all, there's no point in letting a good trip go to waste.
Just before they left to head back home, Marge bought a pack of Lucky Strikes for Frank, that being the cigarettes Frank smokes. And Marge also bought some gas for Frank and Wanda's '55 Chevy wagon while they were still in Santa Rosa...It was as a return of favor for taking the time to run her and the cubs to Santa Rosa.
After returning home, Frank and Wanda invited Marge to their house for a visit while the cubs played in the neighborhood...It was there, while they were having some coffee, that Marge informed Frank and Wanda that her and Al were finally going out to the Chrysler Plymouth dealership that evening to get that Plymouth nine passenger station wagon they've been wanting to get.
"Oh, that's wonderful", Wanda said to Marge. "When Al is at work, you and the cubs do need transportation".
Then Frank suggested to Marge, "Have you and Al considered a Chevrolet? Wanda and I have always gotten good service out of the Chevys we've owned".
"That would be up to Marge and Al, dear", Wanda said to Frank.
"Al and I always did like Chrysler and Plymouth", Marge mentioned. "As for our Chrysler 300, there's no other car I can think of we'd ever trade it for".
"Can't say that I'd blame you there", Frank said to Marge. "That first time Wanda and I went out with you all to The Hop, I've seen how much power that car has".
"That's the fastest car I've ever been in my whole life", Wanda agreed.
After Frank, Wanda and Marge socialized a while longer, Marge eventually went back to the house to prepare lunch for her and the cubs.
Just before Marge had lunch ready, Jed came to the house to put up a baseball glove.
"Jed. Go get the others", Marge said. "I almost have lunch ready".
"Okay, Mom", Jed replied as he set out to get Rex, Clarence and Donna.
Everyone enjoyed a good lunch, and as timing goes, it was just after lunch that the music from the Mr. Softee ice cream truck could be heard in the neighborhood.
https://youtu.be/WsCDGY8e0P8?t=5
Right away, the cubs began asking Mama Marge for 50 cents so they can get a sundae or a shake.
"A small cone is enough right now", Marge told the cubs as she gave them each a nickle, which would cover the cost of a small cone of ice cream.

Meanwhile, at the Horizon Innovations Lab complex, Al Coyote had mentioned to his fellow scientists about him and Marge going to get that Plymouth wagon that evening...Of course, that opened up a round of 'car talk' as to which brand of car is better.
Greg Otter suggested, "General Motors makes pretty fine automobiles. Marie and I always had good luck with the Oldsmobiles we've owned over the years".
"You can't go wrong with a Ford", Woodrow Raccoon said. "I admit I've had some trouble from those transmission selector buttons located in the steering wheel of my Edsel. But that got fixed under warranty".
Johnny Ferret insisted, "Chevy's your best buy for the money".
Harold Wolf said to Al, "You're doing the smart thing by staying with Chrysler Plymouth, Al. The '57 Desoto I've been driving for three years so far has never given me a lick of trouble".
"Nash is really the most practical choice", Poindexter Fox interjected.
"NASH?!", Everyone retorted almost in unison.
"Transmissions don't hold up in them", Lenard Wolverine exclaimed. "You're better off with a Buick".
"They do if you drive them right", Poindexter Fox insisted. "I get better gas mileage from my Nash than any of you get from the cars you drive".
"That's if you don't mind driving like a Sunday school teacher everywhere you go", Lenard Wolverine replied to Poindexter.
"Well, I'm not trying to sound disagreeable. But I know of places where you can get gasoline for 17 cents per gallon", Al said to Poindexter.
"Seventeen cents isn't going to break any of us or make any of us", Lenard Wolverine added.
Al finally said, "Marge and I are definitely going with getting a Plymouth".
"Wise move, Al", Harold Wolf said. "You can't ask for a better car than one made by Chrysler".
That evening after Al got off from work, he stopped in at Clemson Ferret's gas station while still in Encino to top off the tank in the car before heading straight home.
"Hello Al", Clemson Ferret greeted. "High test as usual?".
"Yes. And go ahead and fill it up", Al Coyote replied. "Marge and I are going to Albuquerque this evening to see about getting that station wagon we've been meaning to get".
"Oh, that Plymouth you had talked about getting", Clemson Ferret said as he proceeded to fuel up the car.
"We've been needing a 2nd car", Al said.
"Wow. What do ya know. Two brand new cars in the same year", Clemson complimented Al as he began to wash the windshield of the Chrysler.
"With what Horizon pays me, Marge and I got it that way", Al replied.
"Hey, it looks like I should have also gone to college to become a scientist", Clemson Ferret jested as he and Al got a good laugh.
Clemson Ferret, being a professional auto mechanic and owner of the gas station, was by no means poor...Clemson and Al had known each other for a long time, and usually joke around that way.
"Check your oil?", Clemson asked.
"Oil's okay, Clemson", said Al.
With what gas was already in the tank, the pump kicked off at the slightly more than 18 gallons it took to top it off.
"That comes to three dollars and forty seven cents", said Clemson Ferret.
After paying Clemson Ferret for the gas, Al Coyote said, "See you later, Clemson", just before he drove away.
"Thanks for dropping by", Clemson Ferret replied.
Upon arriving home, Al asked, "Is everyone ready to go get that station wagon?".
"Right now?!", Donna replied as her and the other cubs were excited and cheering.
"I'm already ready!", Rex proclaimed.
"Same here!", Clarence added.
Jed mentioned, "We'll be able to go places while Dad has the other car at work".
"That's right, Son", Al replied to Jed.
"It seems we're all ready to go", Marge said, then asked Al, "Did you withdraw enough cash this morning?"
"I got five thousand out", Al said to Marge. "That's more than enough".
With that said, Al, Marge and the cubs got in the Chrysler, and it was off to the Chrysler Plymouth dealership in Albuquerque to see Dave Pine Martin about that Plymouth nine passenger station wagon. Everyone was thrilled about getting that new, Plymouth, nine passenger wagon as a 2nd car...And the cubs were especially excited along the the trip to Albuquerque, which took them along Route 3 out of Duran, onto Highway 285 northbound past Encino, onto Route 66 at Cline's Corner, then west along Route 66 to Albuquerque.
Upon arriving to the Chrysler Plymouth dealership in Albuquerque, Dave Pine Martin greeted Al, Marge and the cubs.
"How was your vacation?", Marge asked.
"It was great", Dave replied. "And this must be the cub I've heard about who you adopted".
"Yes he is", Al affirmed. "Clarence".
"I'm glad to meet you, Clarence", Dave Pine Martin said as he shook paws with Clarence.
"I'm glad to meet you too, Mr, Pine Martin", Clarence replied.
"I heard you all are in the market for a station wagon", Dave Pine Martin mentioned.
"We're interested in a Plymouth nine passenger", Marge said to Dave.
"We have several Plymouth nine passenger wagons on the lot right now to choose from", Dave assured Al and Marge.
"I'm decided on how I want the car equipped", Marge said, followed by her and Al giving Dave an idea of how they want the car equipped.
"It's possible we might want to have you do a locate, or place a special order", Al mentioned.
"Well, before we get to that, let's see if we have one on the lot already equipped the way you want it", Dave suggested. "You'll never know until you look".
"Hey look, Mom, Dad! Broom broom broom! We're ridin' in style!", Jed proclaimed.
"Those cubs shouldn't be messing around with the cars in the showroom!", Dave Pine Martin retorted.
"You cubs get out of that car right this second!", Marge scorned.
Rex had gotten in behind the wheel of a red, Plymouth, Valiant in the showroom, Clarence got in on the passenger's seat, and Donna had began climbing up on the trunk.
https://www.google.com/search?q=plymouth+valiant+1960&a...:
"Excuse me a moment, Dave. This needs to be dealt with", Al said as he took Rex, Clarence and Donna and began making his way outside with the cubs behind the showroom.
"Certainly", Dave replied.
Outside behind the showroom, Al gave Rex, Clarence and Donna a good spanking, followed by a lecture about leaving paws off of the cars in the showroom.
Jed, being the oldest cub, knew better than get all over the cars like that. He knew to look with the eyes and not with the paws as he viewed two other cars in the showroom...One of which was a white, Chrysler 300 convertible.
https://www.google.com/search?biw=1366&bih=625&...:
And the other a moss green and white, Plymouth, two door, fast back with the 'Sky-Hi' skyliner rear window option.
https://www.google.com/search?biw=1366&bih=625&...:
Rex, Clarence and Donna were still weeping tears when Al brought them back inside.
Once the cubs stopped crying, Dave mentioned to them, "We had these cars in the showroom polished and buffed to a high shine. And when you cubs put your paws all over them, you wind up leaving paw prints on them".
Once the cubs acknowledged what Dave Pine Martin told them about paw prints on the showroom cars, Dave then said to Al and Marge, "Follow me this way. I'll show you the Plymouth nine passenger wagons we have".
https://www.google.com/search?biw=1366&bih=625&...:
When Dave led Al, Marge and the cubs to where the Plymouth nine passenger wagons were, Al and Marge noticed a few of them had the nose end sport tone paint, and two tone roof, like they were looking for.
https://www.google.com/search?biw=1366&bih=625&...:
"Here's a few Fury Sport models that have front swivel sport seats like your Chrysler 300 has", Dave Pine Martin pointed out.
"I wouldn't be interested in those", Marge said.
"You wouldn't?", Dave asked.
"Those front seats would reduce the front seat capacity to two...and making the car an eight passenger", Al mentioned.
"We want to keep it a nine passenger", Marge said. "So we want all bench seats".
"Understandable", Dave replied. "The Belvedere Custom models we have are all bench seat".
"What do you have with a good size engine? That's a consideration to us too", Al asked Dave.
"I'm the kind of driver like my husband is", Marge added as she and Al briefly snuggled. "I too like having some power under my right foot when I drive".
"We like a car that's fun to to ride in", Rex interjected, followed by Al, Marge and Dave getting a good laugh, finding it rather cute the way Rex stated that.
"Well, let's have a look at the window stickers and find out", Dave offered. "Now that red and white Belvedere Custom over there is really sharp, and it has all bench seats. But I already know it has a slant six".
"Oh, that would never do", Marge replied.
https://www.google.com/search?biw=1366&bih=625&...:
Clarence spoke up and said, "Our neighbors have a Chevy station wagon with a six cylinder motor. And it's really slow".
"It's a real slow poke special", Jed added, followed by laughter from everyone.
Looking around at what engines the cars have, Dave pointed out, "With the exception of that six cylinder Belvedere, I'm seeing they're all equipped with a 318 cubic inch V-8".
"Nothing bigger?", Al asked.
Then Dave noticed an option listed on the sticker of a blue and white, Belvedere Custom.
"This one is equipped with Super Pack", Dave said to Al and Marge. "It's a 318, but it has a four barrel, dual exhaust and a high performance cam...It has a manual transmission though".
"I'm sure Marge doesn't want a manual", Al mentioned.
"Al is right", Marge said to Dave. "And I can appreciate the four barrel and high performance cam and all, but I really would like to have a larger engine than a 318".
"It looks like where we're at then...like you said, Al...of doing a locate, or placing an order", Dave Pine Martin acknowledged. "Let's come into my office, and we can put together a list of how you want the car equipped".
Upon entering the showroom on the way to Dave Pine Martin's office, Marge reminded the cubs, "Leave your paws off the showroom cars. Don't have your father deal with you the way he had to do a while ago".
Just before entering the office, Dave Pine Martin gave the cubs lollipops and helium balloons (balloons having the dealership logo on them of course) that the dealership gives out for the cubs of the customers. Then he offered Al and Marge a cup of coffee, which they accepted.
Dave then got out the option price list book that shows what is standard, and what is available as options on different models of 1960 Plymouth automobiles.
Dave began with, "Although a Savoy Deluxe wagon starts out at $2,800, a Savoy is not available in a nine passenger. Savoy is the bottom line Plymouth, and most Savoy wagons are two door anyway".
"We've already researched that and found that out", Al replied.
"We're looking at either a Fury Sport or a Belvedere Custom to get the nine passenger", Dave said, then showed Al and Marge the optional engines that are available.
"You mentioned a consideration of a large engine", Dave mentioned. "So I thought we'd go over engine options first".
Marge noticed the option listed for the Sonoramic Commando 361 cubic inch and 383 cubic inch, both of which had the cross ram, dual quad carburetors like their Chrysler 300 has.
"I'd like the 383 Sonoramic Commando?", Marge said as she was impressed with the horse power rating shown in the book, and that the Sonoramic Commando has the dual four barrels like their Chrysler 300 has.
Other options Marge wanted, and some decisions based on Al's experience with cars, were as follows;
Heavy duty TorqueFlight 3 speed automatic transmission
Air conditioning
Hi-Fi radio
Sure grip differential
Power windows
Rear foam cushion seat, like the front seat is.
Undercoat to protect from rust
Two tone paint (Al and Marge agreed on lite blue and white). That would be white on the nose end sport tone, and white roof.
White wall tires.
However...The air conditioning presented a conflict with Marge's choice of engine.
"The Sonoramics do have more power", Dave Pine Martin admitted to Marge Coyote. "But a Plymouth equipped with the Sonoramic Commando is not available with air conditioning... May I suggest a Golden Commando 395?".
With that said, Marge agreed with Dave's suggestion of a Golden Commando 395, which was still a very powerful engine which comes standard with a four barrel and dual exhaust...And the air conditioning would be available.
Also...To get the rear foam cushion seat, that meant going with the Fury Sport Suburban instead of the Belvedere Custom Suburban...That was a difference of $144 between the two models, but the rear seat being foam cushion was avalible only in the Fury.
Marge and Al decided on the standard; manual brakes, manual steering and manual door locks...After all, except for city driving and in parking lots, those options made no difference out on most of the open highway driving they do anyway.
Once it was affirmed how Marge and Al wanted the station wagon equipped, Dave said, "I doubt an already existing Plymouth Fury nine passenger wagons are out there to be located the way you want it equipped. It looks like we're going to be ordering one special from the factory".
"What's the time we're looking at?", Al asked.
"If we phone the order in today, and get the order form mailed to factory in Detroit by the end of this week, it will be about 60 days", Dave Pine Martin said. "Your station wagon should be ready for delivery in about the early part of August".
Marge said she was okay with that if it meant getting the car the way she wants it to be.
Dave got with the owner of the dealership, Leo Cougar, and Leo affirmed that a Plymouth nine passenger station wagon equipped the way Marge and Al wants it will have to be ordered from the factory.
As Rex, Clarence and Donna were standing around a black, four door, Chrysler Imperial on the showroom floor, Rex proclaimed, "If I was a millionaire, this would be my car".
"My car too if I was a thousand billion millionaire", Donna added.
https://www.google.com/search?biw=1366&bih=625&...:
"Well, you cubs are not millionaires. So paws off the cars", Marge reminded the cubs.
After working some figures, Dave Pine Martin, with Leo Cougar's approval, promised Al and Marge, "I can work a deal down to $4,070 on a Fury nine passenger equipped with what you want...plus tax and transportation".
That was an offer Al and Marge felt was fair, and were happy with it.
"Wow!", Rex exclaimed. "We gettin' the station wagon today?!"
"We're ordering it today", Marge told Rex.
"It's a special order", Dave said to Rex. "We won't be able to locate one, so that station wagon is not even built yet".
Then Dave made the offer to Al and Marge, "I can let you drive that station wagon off the lot for $1,100 if you want to trade that Chrysler 300 you got there", as he had been eyeing over that limited production 300.
"Aww, no way!", Jed retorted.
"Okay, cubs", Al said. "You can see your mom and I are conducting business".
Marge replied to Dave, "We're getting this as a 2nd car".
"We're not trading in our present car", Al added.
"Al and I like that 300", Marge then told Dave Pine Martin with a smile.
"Well, I'd thought I'd ask", said Dave. "There aren't many of those made. In fact, the convertible we have in the showroom is the only 300 we have here right now".
"Will you need us to arrange financing?", Dave asked Al and Marge as he continued filling out the order form.
"We'll be paying cash like last time", Marge answered.
"It doesn't make any sense to pay the bank 3% to 4% interest when you don't have to", Al added.
"Yea, I remember you did pay cash, with the trade in of your old '54 Chrysler, when you bought that Chrysler 300", Dave Pine Martin replied as he continued filling out the order form. "Great car, the 300 is".
Dave offered to add a dealer installed roof rack for free being he didn't have to do the footwork of setting up financing. Al and Marge thanked Dave for the offer of the roof rack, and agreed they'd consider it when the car comes in. By now, Al, Marge and Dave envisioned how the car will look;
1960 Plymouth Fury Station Wagon by moyomongoose

With the order form now ready to be mailed off to Plymouth Division of Chrysler Corporation, the station wagon will arrive at the dealership within 60 days...And with  a deposit of $100 as required by the dealership, everything was set into motion of getting the station wagon ordered and built.
Once the family got back home that evening, they invited neighbors, Frank, Wanda and their 8 year old Cheryl over for coffee (or Kool-Aid), and told them about ordering their Plymouth nine passenger station wagon.
"I can hardly wait to see it", Frank said.
"Oh cool", Cheryl exclaimed.
"Well, it was special ordered, and it hasn't been built yet", Al replied.
"They said it will be ready for us to pick up at the beginning of August", Marge added.
"You all have been needing a 2nd car for some time", Wanda mentioned.
Frank and Wanda also had some good news to share as well.
"Oh by the way. Our son, Jerald, got hired on with the New Mexico Highway Maintenance Department today", Frank said. "He reports to work this coming Monday".
"Oh that's wonderful", Marge said. "He should do good with that".
"The pay isn't bad to start out with", Wanda mentioned.
"Once Jerald's been with them a while, he'll be making good pay after he's gotten raises over time", Frank added. "But that's not all...You want to tell them, Wanda?".
Wanda announced, "Sunday after this coming, on the 26th, Jerald and Cindy already have arrangements to get married after the morning church service is over".
"Well, congratulations", Al said.
"Wow! Cool!", Rex exclaimed.
"Awww. That's so lovely", Donna added.
"My cousin is a realtor in Roswell", Wanda said. "And he promised he'd work a deal with Jerald and Cindy on 7 acres just south of here beyond Duran".
"And my brother has an old camper trailer he'll let them have", said Frank. "That camper ain't much, but we can get it brought onto the property while we help them get a house built".
"Well, we are certainly happy for Jerald and Cindy", said Marge.
Cheryl, who was sitting next to Clarence at the dining table, reached over and hugged Clarence and said, "I wish we could get married one day".
"Well you do know Clarence is from the future", Mama Wanda said to Cheryl.
"That's why that couldn't be possible", Daddy Frank added.
"Well, I'm still gonna miss you when you go back", Cheryl said to Clarence.
"I'll miss you too", Clarence said to Cheryl.
Well...Even though the time may come that Clarence and Cheryl will not always be with each other, at least they can enjoy each other's companionship while it lasts.
And it looks like the summer of 1960 seems to be starting out good.

They may have been gas guzzlers, less safe and more about sex appeal but man those cars are awesome!
moyomongoose
3 years, 1 month ago
They certainly were. And gas wasn't expensive back in those days anyway.

It's still cheep in the US compared too most of the world. By the way, I read up on their new car, I see they got many of the added extras, did they also get the new safety ones?
moyomongoose
3 years, 1 month ago
They most likely didn't consider safety options. For that matter, I don't know if any safety options were even offered on most cars back then.
TheGroundedAviator

I read the cars brochure and they were an option, but they probably didn't think about it despite what Clarence said. It'll be funny if he gets back, drives home, is in the back of the van (I think it was) or SUV, somewhat out of sight and they get pulled over and ticketed for a child unrestrained!
moyomongoose
3 years, 1 month ago
It's a Honda Odyssey van.

I'm sure that 6 months in the year 1960 would get Clarence out of the habit of wearing a seat belt.
TheGroundedAviator
3 years, 1 month ago
Yeah, I'm almost religious about them myself! Speech, mannerisms, attire (would be interesting too have a montage ofhis looks over the time zones) and sense of belonging.
