Chapter Eleven

Zack sits down in front of table of suits, they all speaking to him while reading through the files on him that had been given to them, they assessing and deciding if Zack was ready to once again be put back on the field and leave his supervised state.

So far everything was good, Zack had been cooperative and obedient, and during his tests and combat simulations shown no signs of a repeat or anything that may cause concern. Clearly there was no reason to continue with his supervision, he capable of returning to active duty.

Dolly stands outside the room in wait, she still having to be within fifty feet of Zack until the bracelets were removed. Dolly looks at her watch checking the time, Zack had been in there for a long time so hopefully they would be done with him soon.

She sighs to herself, in one more day Raven Wolf’s trials would be held, it had been several months since General Mort had assigned her and the other super soldiers to the task of interfering with them as to try and capture Raven Wolf’s leader, the military sure cutting things close, Dolly had been starting to think that Zack wasn’t going to get back on duty in time, result in both him and her being removed from the assignment.

*******

Kane and the other super soldiers are all within the living quarters provided to them by the military. The four doing what it was they usually did, Chase sleeping, Vaan working away at his computer, Kane reading through documents and files important to their upcoming mission and Alistair looking at his reflection in the mirror and admiring himself.

General Mort enters the room, all of them stopping what they are doing as they stand in attention, though Chase had to be woken up by Alistair throwing a hairbrush at his head and waking him first.

General Mort walks up to the table that Kane had been reading his files at. “There are some details I need to sort out with you four before your mission tomorrow.”

The super soldiers all look to one another, they having thought that everything had been covered numerous times already, Alistair of course the one to speak up and question this. “What the heck else could there be? We’ve don’t the simulation over a hundred times dealing with every possible outcome and scenario Brights could think of, what more could there possibly be for us to do.”

“I need to speak to you about the super soldiers, the ones that are within Raven Wolf.”

Vaan nods his head the group already well aware of the fact that Raven Wolf has somehow gotten their hands on two of them. “Yes, everyone involved with this heard the transmission that mentioned the super soldiers in Raven Wolf in one of our first briefings concerning this. Though we don’t know which ones the super soldiers might be we’ve put the information into the simulator and gone through various scenarios of how they might interfere with us.”

General Mort nods his head. “I am well aware of that, the issue though that was not covered was the fact that the military has now decided that they want them.”

Kane crosses his arms as he lets out a deep laugh. “That can’t be done.” He looks back to General Mort there just no way. “I was the first super solider the military got their hands on, and I came to the military with the intention of joining, all of the super soldiers that came after me were all caught by me because no one in your military could do it, and even then I face much difficulty getting them under control, Magellan being the absolute worst to bring in.”

“Now this was back when they were only children and weak, still recovering from the True Blood’s execution.” He holds his hand out to Alistair. “Yet in this weakened state Quincy was able to break one of my arms.”

Alistair grins to himself as he thinks fondly back to the ordeal. “I do remember that you know, it was a lot of fun.”

Kane continues his difficulties not ending there. “While Magellan put up such a fight that Quincy had to be called in to help me subdue him. To ask us now to try and subdue a super solider who would by now be full grown and perfectly healthy, it’s just not possible.”

Alistair nodes his head in agreement, though he only had experience in capturing Magellan he still remembered how hard it had been. “Killing them will be difficult enough for us, but still doable. Capturing one will be impossible.”

General Mort nods his head, having expected this reasoning from them. “The order is not one that must be followed, it’s more a suggestion. Kill them if you have no choice, but if the opportunity arises bring one in.”

Kane lets out a laugh, there no way that such an opportunity would arise. “Fine, if we happen to run into the situation than we will.”

Chase looks the group over, a curious look on his face. “So who do you think the other two super soldiers are?”

Alistair shrugs his shoulders. “Who knows, there were a lot of us originally, no doubt though we’ll know them when we see them.”

The other super soldiers nod their heads in agreements, even though they were unsure of their individual numbers each one of them had at the least recognized the other by batch number.

Chase looks over to General Mort. “Say we do happen to capture one... just what would happen to them?”

General Mort shakes his head, he having no idea of that. “It’s hard to say.”

Chase seems a little worried. “They wouldn’t replace Miss. Conner would they?”

Alistair begins to laugh at the comment. “I’ll never understand the infatuation you and Magellan have for that wild.”

Chase looks back to him that not how the situation was at all. “It’s nothing like that, she works will as Magellan’s partner, and she’s able to keep up with the rest of us better than anyone else we’ve had to work with can. Plus I just think she’s really nice, she brings me energy drinks all the time!”

Kane, Alistair and Vaan all groan at this information, after Dolly had learned that they help Chase with his sleeping problem Dolly would every once and a while bring one for Chase. Though it did keep him awake it also made him extremely talkative and insufferably annoying.

Of the super soldiers Vaan was possibly the most annoyed by it, he looking over to Chase with an expression of clear annoyance. “I wish she would STOP bringing you them.”

Alistair nods his head in agreement. “You’re much more tolerable when you’re sleeping all day.”

Chase lets out an annoyed grumble, he absolutely hating the fact that he was always tired and sleeping all day.

General Mort looks the group over. “Just make sure there are no mistakes. This mission is the best chance we’re going to get, we can’t afford to mess it up.”

Vaan smiles there no way that anything could go wrong. “We’ve been through every possible scenario in the simulator, we’re not going to make a mistake.”

Alistair laughs as he turns away, returning to looking at his reflection in the mirror near him. “If there is any mistake to be made it will be Conner that does it.”

Chase looks over to Alistair. “Why do you dislike her so much?”

Alistair snickers as he replies. “Well she’s a wild for one, and she’s an ugly wolf for another, and I don’t much care for her attitude at all.”

General Mort looks from Chase and Alistair, this something he found curious. “For curiosity’s sake, what are all your opinions on Conner? It’s clear what Lockheart and Quincy’s opinion of her is, but what about the rest of you?”

Kane seems surprised to be asked the question. “Truthfully, I admit I am impressed with her performance. She is not bad for a soldier that isn’t of the super soldier’s breed. I can understand why you chose her and her brother to be the ones to partner with Magellan our odd man out. In fact she is the only one I’ve seen that’s capable of keeping up with any of us.”

He frowns his complements ending there. “Despite her skills I cannot say that I am exactly found of her. She’s too smart, she knows things that should be kept secret and is quick to figure things out that she is not supposed to know about.”

Vaan nods his head agreeing with Kane on this point. “I don’t trust her. That’s the simplest way to summarize my feelings on the matter.”

Alistair frowns as he looks back to General Mort. “As you stated I absolutely can’t stand her, though I’m sure everyone’s figured that out by now. Why do you ask?”

General Mort frowns, the situation having change in a way he had not expected. “Magellan’s personality has changed since I’ve partnered him with her, he’s not the same as he was before.”

Chase nods his head. “Yeah, he’s gotten pretty found of her anyone can tell.” He quickly corrects what he had said, not meaning in imply anything. “As his partner I mean, and as a friend, nothing more than that I don’t think!”

General Mort crosses his arms. “My concerns is more directed towards how his skills are starting to suffer. When he hands in his accuracy and combat tests more often than not the result he’ll send in will be his second or third attempt. He’s never had to re-do a test until recently, he’s always been able to get perfect results on the first try.”

Kane frowns, though he could see where the concern was coming from he didn’t think that it would be much of an issue. “Those are just tests, combat is a different matter. He’ll perform just as well as he usually would.”

*******

Zack rubs his wrist, it finally free of the torturous bracelet that had been on him for months. “I’m so glad to finally have that thing off!”

Dolly nods her head, she glad to have it removed from herself too, even though hers didn’t send currents of electricity through her body as it had done to Zack. “Yes, though I’m sure you appreciate it much more than me considering the circumstances.”

Zack grins as he looks over to her. “Are you sure? I mean you’re finally going to be getting me out of your house, I would think you would be much more excited about this by that fact alone.”

Dolly laughs at the comment. “You weren’t that bad as a roommate you know.”

Zack looks back to her. “Really? Well then maybe I should just move in with you then.”

Dolly begins making her way out of the building, there a lot of work that needed to be done still, their mission not that far away. “You weren’t that great as a roommate either.”

Zack frowns as he walks ahead of Dolly into her line of sight. “I’m serious here. I hate having to live at the laboratory, and staying with Louis is not that much better... plus when I stay at his house it starts up all kinds of weird rumours about me...”

Dolly stops as she thinks the proposal over. “I can’t keep you around my apartment. Moving in is a lot different than temporarily housing you. You can’t just keep living on my sofa like you’ve been doing, you need your own space.”

Zack lets out a sigh, obviously Dolly was right about that.

Dolly smiles at Zack, speaking up before he got too downhearted over the comment. “But hey, if you’re really set on moving in I don’t mind, you’ll just have to wait until I can get a bigger place. The two of us can start looking for something after our big mission, how’s that sound?”

Zack nods his head. “Well sure, as long as you can guarantee that your father isn’t going to kill me anyway.”

*******

Several members of Raven Wolf are all gathered within an area far from the shelter of their village they already collected at the location that the trials would be taking place in, the members of Raven Wolf not the only tribe there, other members from other tribes already starting to gather to this location.

Hundreds of warriors currently keep watch over the area, scouting to make sure that no danger was headed their way, these trials were a well known event, it very likely that the domestics had heard about it and were planning to interfere, the warriors having been preparing for the worst since coming here.

Tahki stands by Shiya, she never leaving his side since arriving on account that he always was targeted for capture by the military, it Tahki’s job to prevent that from happening while the trials were taking place.

Shiya right now helps Achak out as he mixed several medicines together in anticipation for the fights that would soon be taking place, there always a lot of wounds to treat when it came to traditions like this. Shiya making sure that Achak was doing everything correctly, as him having a mishap would not only result in a very angry warrior, but would also decrease their strength against the domestic military should they show up.

Achak looks over to Shiya, a rather concerned look on his face. “Are you sure the domestics are going to show up here? This ceremony is sacred...”

Tahki looks over to her husband. “Our traditions and beliefs mean nothing to the domestic military. If they are presented with an opening than they will take it.”

Achak lets out a sigh, that just disrespectful on so many levels. “And they accuse us of being primitive and unrefined.”

Shiya closes his eyes, the reputation that the military had not the only reason that he was certain that something might happen. “The dream Yula had in concerns to the trials... I have gone over what he has told me hundreds of times and I still can’t make heads or tails of it. Clearly it was a warning that something will happen, but of what that could be I have no possible clue.”

Achak thinks back, he indeed remembering Shiya discussing this with him. “The vision where everyone just disappears?

Shiya nods his head. “Yes... it’s so strange...”

Iuana walks up to her father sitting down next to him. “I’m just happy that because of Yula’s dream you were able to convince the elders to stay at the village and allow Yula and many others that should traditionally be here to stay behind as well. With only the warriors here things should go smoother, as they’ll have a lot less people to look after.”

Achak frowns as he looks back to her. “And what about me!? I’m not a warrior! If I’m attacked I’m as good as dead.”

Shiya looks over to Achak, there not much he could do to prevent his inclusion. “We can’t have this event without our shaman, not only are you supposed to perform much of the rituals but we need you to tend to the wounds the warriors may receive during the trials.”

Achak still doesn’t seem all that happy. “Leaving the village is how my father died and stuck me with his stupid position as shaman. I just don’t see me fairing any better than him.”

Shiya doesn’t seem too worried about Achak. “Relax, the only ones here that are not warriors are you and Iuana. Keeping you two safe will of course be my and the warriors top priority.”

Iuana looks back to her father. “Don’t forget, the domestic military is after you, so be sure to watch yourself as well.”

Shiya nods his head. “Of course.” He gets to his feet preparing to leave Achak to finish his work on his own, he able to handle the rest now that Achak knew he was using all of the correct ingredients. “I need to go over some details with our warriors now, I will return soon.”

Iuana watches Shiya as he takes his leave, Tahki leaving with him. She looking back to Achak and watching him work. “I’m nervous...”

Achak nods his head as he takes a moment from his work to speak with Iuana. “That is no surprise what with this all being about you, do not worry though, everything will turn out just fine. Shiya has planned for every situation that he can think of.”

Tahki walks alongside Shiya as he makes his way through the warriors who were right now resting or awaiting their turn to keep watch, Shiya looking back to Tahki and speaking with her about their current situation. “My informant within the military has told me that getting information regarding Raven Wolf is almost impossible now. The task force they now have to deal with us is very small, only six members in total, and they are all apparently very good at keeping silent on the situation.”

Tahki seems annoyed. “Wonderful... lack of information will only result in making things more difficult for us. Still, if it’s only a group of six than that that means they’re not going to have the man power for an upfront attack, their only option will be a surprise attack.” A tired look fills her face. “Also, the chances that the soldiers in this small group are the super soldiers that Shanira mentioned the domestic military had are going to be very high.”

Shiya calls out to Kitchi, motioning for him to come, he giving the warrior instructions once he is near him. “You and your charge can replace the group keeping watch on the east fields.”

Kitchi nods his head understanding his orders, he then calling out to several warriors that were currently following under his orders, they quickly leaving to attend to their task.

Shiya watches the group leave before looking back to Tahki. “I contemplate if I really should be doing this... tradition or not it’s just too dangerous because of the attention I have gathered from the military.”

Tahki shrugs her shoulders, though common sense told her that this was a bad idea she knew from being married to the tribe’s shaman just how important traditions and ritual were to wilds. “You cannot let the military cripple Raven Wolf to the point where we are afraid to do anything, the right to live aside from the fighting is just as much our right as it is theirs.” She looks over to a group calling out to them and then motioning for them to replace another group at their post, the group quickly doing as they were world, Tahki looking back to Shiya and continuing their conversation. “Everything will be fine, you’ve taken as much as you possibly can into account, and no one in Raven Wolf is weak.”

“And if the rest of the super soldiers show up?”

Tahki nods her head prepared to deal with it should the situation arise. “Super soldiers are powerful, but they are not unstoppable. They will be dealt with. The only concerns I have are the fact that Teddy’s sister and Twenty Six are involved.”

Shiya comes to a stop upon hearing this name, he looking back to her as he spoke to her about this. “Twenty Six... the super solider that looked like Eleven?”

Tahki nods her head yes as begins to explain, though she was a super solider herself she knew only a little about what was going on between those two, Eleven still very quiet about anything. “You could probably tell just by looking at him, but he’s from the same batch number as Eleven. I supposed you could call him a brother to her...” She lowers her head, that incorrect, the connection that the super soldiers had within their groups of one hundred much closer than that. “Though it’s always been much more than that for us... almost as if we were the same person... if one of us got hurt it would affect all of us even though we could not feel it, the same for if one of us was upset... when I woke up to find that I was the last one alive of my group it was like a large part of me had died, I had never felt so small and alone.”

She looks over to Eleven who right now stands in the distance on her surveillance rounds once again, she rarely one to ever take a break and possibly never bothering to take one if Tahki didn’t tell her from time to time to do so. “I can only imagine what it’s like to be her, to have at least one other of the group to survive. I would not be able to fight them either, heck I probably would not be able to separate from them for even a second.”

Shiya sighs to himself, everything so complicated now. “We wouldn’t be going through all this trouble if the elders had not insisted that I step down. I would have at liked to at least deal with those two before jumping to this.”

Tahki watches her chieftain, the idea that he would soon be replaced not easy information to swallow, Tahki thinking that Shiya was a great leader that should continue on with his role. “So Shiya... what are you going to do once you’re replaced as Raven Wolf’s leader?”

Shiya lets out a sigh, though he knew what he should do it wasn’t really something that he wanted to talk about. “You must have reached that conclusion on your own by no haven’t you?”

Tahki lowers her head, she indeed having thought about it, the fact that Shiya didn’t want to talk about it proving that her assumptions had been right. Shiya was the one being targeted by the military, he was the reason that Raven Wolf was in as much danger as it was. If he was no longer tied to them as their leader than the best way to keep them safe would be to leave. “You’re really going to go through with that? Leave your family and friends behind like that?”

“If I wish to protect them than what choice do I have?”

*******

Teddy holds his spear up, swinging his arm forward and letting it go, the weapon hurling forward and hitting the ground, frightening a small rabbit that it can landed near and causing it to quickly hop away.

Teddy’s ears drop as he lets out a sigh, he slowly walking up to his weapon and pulling it from the ground. He looks down at the marking of the raven with the head of a wolf that was now upon his chest, he unable to hunt a single thing since acquiring it. “And here I thought it was all just a dumb superstition Iuana and the others had... you really can’t catch anything when you’re under this curse.”

He grunts to himself as he kicks at the dirt on the ground, a little annoyed that this skill was lost to him, Kitchi choosing to call out to him at this moment to get his attention. “Hey Teddy!”

Teddy looks back to Kitchi, the younger wolf running up to him and beginning to explain. “I’m here to replace you and your group for the guard duty task. So you should go back and rest now.”

Teddy frowns a nervous look on his face. “How could I possibly catch any sleep at all tonight?? Iuana’s trails are tomorrow!”

Kitchi laughs at the comment. “Well that’s exactly why you need your rest! You’re going to be doing a lot of fighting tomorrow you know, you’ll never make it past your first opponent if you don’t get some sleep.”

Teddy lets out a small sigh, Kitchi absolutely right. “I know... I just... it’s not easy you know.” He starts to become a little doubtful. “What if I don’t win?”

“Then Iuana will marry someone else and your life will be ruined.” Teddy frowns at the response he had gotten, Kitchi frowning back. “Well what did you expect me to say to that? I’m not going to give you the false impression that everything is going to be all right and just perfectly fall into place. The trials are going to be really hard, and if you really love Iuana and are really strong then you’re going to get through them, if not then you won’t and somebody else will.”

Teddy is determined not to let this happen. “I’m not going to fail the trials!”

Kitchi argues back with him. “You will if you don’t get your sleep, so go get your sleep already!”

Teddy groans as he turns away and begins heading back, even though he knew he should try to sleep it wasn’t going to be easy for him to do at all.

*******

Zack is once again gathered with the other four super soldiers, it very early in the morning now as they prepare for the mission that would be happening only a few hours from now, the day of the Raven Wolf trials having finally arrived.

Alistair takes a moment to look up from his equipment. “So Magellan, you’ve dealt with this Raven Wolf group more than any of us, any idea on who the other two super soldiers we’re going to run into might be?”

Zack grunts at the question, his response so normal that it was impossible to tell that he was lying and at least knew the exact identity of one of them. “How should I know? I dealt with Raven Wolf before true enough but I never encountered any super soldiers, at least that I know of.”

Alistair laughs at the possibilities. “There were just so many of us! One Thousand Three hundred and fifty different batches of one hundred, who knows who we’ll be running into out there, this mission is going to be a lot of fun. There’s just nothing like fighting another super soldier, everything else is so boring compared to them.”

Vaan frowns as he looks over to Alistair. “You would know about that better than any of us now wouldn’t you. You and everyone in you batch had a reputation for attacking the other super soldiers in the facility.”

“Do you think he’ll be one that I fought before?”

“Considering how often you would get into fights the probability is high.”

Kane speaks up as he looks over to Alistair. “Fighting the other super soldiers is not our focus. Our objective is to capture Raven Wolf’s leader don’t forget that.”

Alistair frowns as he looks back to Kane. “Yeah don’t worry I haven’t forgotten that, just because that’s our objective though doesn’t mean that I can’t have some fun while I’m out there.”

Zack kicks a bench that Chase had fallen asleep on, Chase getting startled back awake, quickly getting back to his feet as he continues getting ready for the mission, Zack just shaking his head as he watches him.

Alistair laughs as he watches Chase franticly get everything together. “It’s been said a hundred times before, but it’s no wonder why they decided to terminate his batch.”

The door to the room opens, General Mort entering it and standing to the side holding his hand out as a figure enters behind him, everyone stopping what they are doing as they take a look at her, a wolf of wild decent with fur as black as night and dressed in the typical garb a wild would wear standing before them.

Alistair frowns as he looks over to General Mort. “Who the heck is this?”

Zack chuckles as he looks over to Alistair. “Can’t you tell? It’s Conner.”

Chase stares at Dolly for a moment. “Miss. Conner? What did you do to your fur?”

Dolly frowns crossing her arms. “Coloured it. My brother and people that might recognize me as my brother’s twin are going to be there remember? Black is the colour that best hides markings that could distinguish me.”

Alistair laughs as he looks Dolly over. “Well you’ll have no trouble fitting in at all, just hope one of us doesn’t accidently mistake you as an enemy, you look like them so it will be hard to tell.”

Dolly isn’t amused. “I swear Quincy if you hurt me during this mission and use ‘I couldn’t tell her apart from all the other wilds because they all look the same. Ugly’ I am going to make you regret it!”

Alistair grins back at her. “Sounds like fun. I wanna see just what you have in mind to make me regret it.”

General Mort waves Alistair off, forcing him to back off and stop talking. “That’s enough. You are all super soldiers that are not stupid enough to make the simple error of mistaking Miss. Conner as an enemy.”

Alistair frowns, it no fun if he put it that way, a mistake would just make him and the others look stupid.

General Mort looks the group over. “You all know your tasks so do them, and without any mistakes.” The super soldiers all nod their heads in understanding, there no way that any of them were going to let this task turn sour.

General Mort motions for them to leave the room and be on their way. “Now get going.”

Kane nods his head as he leaves the room, Alistair following soon after, a wide grin on his face he looking forward to this mission because of the other super soldier’s involvement, he looking to Dolly as he passed by her and letting out a snicker at her appearance.

Vaan lets out a sigh as he too leaves, he not looking forward to this at all. “I hate field missions... staying put in the facility is much more to my liking.”

Chase follows the others out as soon as he is finished his preparations, it hard to tell how he felt about this whole ordeal, he just looking tired like he usually did.

Zack takes a moment to look over toward Dolly, the two of them the ones that looked forward to this mission the least, he eventually beginning to follow the others out, intent on getting this mission over with already, Dolly following behind him, she rather apprehensive about this mission, her brother after all going to be involved in it.

Raven Wolf - 03 - The Warriors - Chapter 10
Raven Wolf - 03 - The Warriors - Chapter 12
Book 3 in the Raven Wolf series.

Due to human negligence the world as we know it has ended and been reborn. The animal spirits that guide man giving them the forms of animals so that they would be able to survive in this new wilderness. Though now carrying the form of beasts man has not forgotten the place they once had, as an existence greater then just what nature wanted of them, an existence above all.

Those that worked to gain their humanity are known as domestics, while those who wished to follow the rolls the spirits had given them were known as wilds. Both groups grew arrogant and hateful of one another, the wilds saw the domestics as selfish monsters, for they were returning to the ways that had once destroyed the world, while the domestics saw the wilds as primitive beings afraid of progress, they no better than wild animals.

The raven and the wolf spirits grew tired of the destruction and fighting, and sided with the wilds in their ideals, the domestics only capable of further destroying nature. In their anger they marked a tribe of wilds with a curse, they being removed from the sacred circle of life, unable to hunt or grow their own food, their souls never able to move on while their bodies are unable to return to the earth when they died. The curse upon them only broken once the domestics are gone once and for all. The cursed tribe now known to all by the name of the spirits whom cursed them. ‘Raven Wolf'
