Thomas Nash's iconic drawing of the jolly old gentleman from the January 1, 1881 edition of Harper's Weekly provided the inspiration for this picture. It is this drawing,"Merry Old Santa Claus", that our modern depictions of Santa Claus is derived and was a huge departure from Nast's usual fare of political cartooning.
