Chapter Six

Dolly looks around the large museum she was in, she not dressed in her usual military uniform and instead in her own casual clothes, she coming to this place on her own accord and not by military order.

It had been a while since she’s been to a place quite like this, she only having come here as a child on school trips and never remembering it being quiet so interesting. Her attention span as a child having possibly been too short to fully grasp everything that was in here. She looks back to Zack speaking to him. “This place is huge, can you imagine what it must be like to live here?”

Zack frowns at the question. “I don’t know... annoying to keep clean?” He didn’t really see why anyone would want to live here, even though it was pretty amazing in size and architect it was full of old junk and remains of all kinds of things long dead.

Dolly turns back toward Zack. “Well, let’s find someone that can help us. Eve’s file gave us this location as her home address.”

Zack looks back to Dolly, the idea that someone would actually live here a little unbelievable. “Are you sure you wrote it down correctly, and that this is her actual home address and not her secondary place of work or something? I mean who would want to live here of all places?”

Dolly turns back to Zack. “As if you have any right to complain, who’s the one that lived at military headquarters before being sent to sloth around my apartment?”

Zack nods his head Dolly indeed having a point. “Yeah I guess you’ve got me there... Alright then let’s ask around and find Professor Cadrey.”

Zack and Dolly begin making their way through the museum, Zack pulling at and fixing his clothes the whole time, he not used to ever wearing anything besides a military uniform, he having never worn anything but a uniform before, not wearing one feeling unusually odd.

Dolly and Zack soon spot the old fox that ran the old museum in the main domestic city, he looking over his exhibits fondly, letting out a sigh when he spots a wad of gum stuck onto one of the display cases, he walking away from the exhibit and soon returning with roll of paper towel and glass cleaner, the old fox pulling the gum off and then beginning to polish the glass clean once more. “Such disrespect for history...”

Dolly clears her throat getting the old fox’s attention. “Excuse me sir, do you know where I can find the owner of this museum, Mr. Cadrey?”

Eve’s father turns away from his work, he looking back to see a grey wolf and a skunk who wouldn’t leave the cuffs of his sleeves alone. He pausing his work for a moment before approaching him. “I’m Mr. Cadrey, can I help you with anything?”

Dolly nods her head. “Yes, my name is Dolly Conner, and I’ve come here to see your daughter Eve. I just want to ask her some questions concerning my brother.”

Eve’s father fixes his glasses. “Eve knows your brother?”

Zack speaks up confirming that she did. “Well we’re assuming so anyway, they kind of got kidnapped around the same time by the same person.”

Eve’s father lets out a laugh. “Oh! Well isn’t that nice!”

Zack frowns at the response, getting kidnapped hardly a thing he could classify as nice. “You’ve got a few screws loose don’t you?”

Dolly elbows Zack in the arm he being rude. “Zack really doesn’t mean that. Now, you wouldn’t mind telling us where we could find Eve do you?”

Eve’s father nods his head, he telling them exactly where they could find her. “If you’re looking for Eve she should be in the break room waiting for a fourth grade class to get here. She does the tours for the schools you see and they always tire her out, so she usually rests before they show up.” He points them in the direction they should head in. “It’s just down the hall past the main desk.”

Zack looks down the hall they were to head down. “Thank you for your cooperation.”

Dolly frowns as she looks back to Zack. “It’s thanks for your help. We’re off duty you do know that right? Honestly you can be such a dunce.”

The old fox turns around getting back to cleaning his glass display, Dolly and Zack leaving as they beginning walking to the room that Mr. Cadrey had directed him in, they soon reaching the door with the employees only label on it, Zack opening the door and entering first, he looking the room over as Dolly enters soon after him, they spotting the female fox they were looking for, she sitting at the break table and eating lunch while watching the small television that was there.

Dolly approaches her speaking up to get her attention. “Excuse me, Eve Cadrey?”

Eve lets out a sight. “Miss. Lawrence you’re ten minutes early, you’re going to have to at least give me a few more minutes to finish my meal before I can start taking your class through the tour.”

Zack begins to laugh at Eve’s misunderstanding, Dolly frowning at him before looking back to Eve, Dolly continuing to try and get her attention. “I’m not Miss. Lawrence, I just here to ask you a few questions if that’s alright with you.”

Eve turns back to Dolly, she letting out a shocked gasp when she recognizes her, Eve jumping to her feet and quickly distancing herself from her. Dolly having been actively hunting her down the last time she had seen here. “What are you doing here?” Her eyes move from Dolly to Zack, she recognizing him as well. “You brought the super soldier here too!? Oh this is just great!” She crosses her arms as she stares back at Dolly. “I’ve already answered the questions the military asked me when I came back to the city! I have nothing more to say to you people!”

Dolly holds her hand to herself. “You’re mistake Miss. Cadrey, we’re not here on military order, the questions I have for you are purely of a personal matter. I just want to know about Teddy... you’re one of the last people that I know to have seen him. I just want to know if he’s alright.”

Eve begins to calm down, thought it was true that these two had caused her and her companions a lot of trouble and grief, she also knew that the reason Dolly was chasing after them was because her brother was with them and she had been trying to get him back. “Oh... I see...” She looks over to Zack. “What’s he doing here then?”

Zack frowns as he looks over to Dolly. “I don’t have a much of a choice on the matter. I’m on probation after being in prison for the attempted murder of Kit Milford, I have to stay under Miss. Conner’s watch until the courts decide I’m well enough to be on my own again.”

Eve frowns, though she was willing to possibly go out on a limb and trust Dolly she couldn’t bring herself to trust someone like Zack, he having defiantly been the more ruthless of the two when they were being chased by them. “Well it certainly didn’t take you long to get off the hook for trying to kill that poor boy!”

Zack shrugs his shoulders. “What can I say? The military likes me, besides it’s not like the little brat died.”

Dolly hushes Zack before returning her focus to trying to calm Eve down. “Please, don’t mind him, I only want to know about my brother... that’s it. It not just me that’s worried about him, my mother and father are concerned as well, it’s been a long time and we don’t even know if he’s okay or even still alive.”

Eve looks back to Dolly, if that was really all that she wanted to know then she really didn’t see the problem, after all Dolly was Teddy’s sister and from the looks of it she just needed reassurance that her brother was still ok. “Teddy is doing just fine, so don’t worry about him. He made the decision not to return to the city and to instead stay with Raven Wolf.”

Dolly seems confused, her brother not the type to do something like that at all, from what she knew Teddy was always trying so hard to be seen as a domestic and not a wild. “Really... that doesn’t make any sense... why would he?”

Eve smiles at Dolly it not being a really being something that needed a really long explanation. “He found his place in the world, though it was completely not what he had expected it to be, he said he felt more welcome and at home there then he ever did in the city.”

Zack groans as he shakes his head. “Wonderful, what a perfect time for him go all nature loving and get in tune with his wild side.” He looks back to Eve as he now beings to question her. “It was because of that pretty little white wolf wasn’t it? He went and ran off with her just like I thought he would didn’t he?”

Eve frowns at Zack. “Teddy’s decision was a lot more thought out and meaningful than just chasing after a pretty face.”

Dolly looks back to Zack she very irritated with his meddling in the conversation. “Zack please, just be quite and wait for me to finish!”

Zack sighs as he turns away from them. “Fine.” He walks away from them making his way to the table in the break room, pulling up a chair and sitting down at it. He pausing for a moment when he realizes something, turning and looking to the chairs next to him to find a racoon sleeping under the table on several chairs he had placed close together to use as a bed.

Zack looks from him and back to Dolly and Eve, they still talking to one another. Zack then looking back to the racoon and loudly clearing his throat, startling the racoon and waking him, there a loud thump when he hits his head against the table he was sleeping on. “Aw geeze!!!” He props his foot against the leg of the table pushing it out from over him, he looking back up at the person that had woken him. “Who are you? And what are you doing in here? The sign on the door reads employees only.”

Eve looks over to Fitz when he hears that he had woken. “Don’t mind them Fitz, they’ll be gone soon.”

Fitz grumbles to himself as he rolls over trying to get comfortable again, he looking up to the skunk that had woke him up, he catching onto the numbers tattoo on the inside of his ear, Fitz mumbling to himself as he reads them out loud with a bored tone of voice. “One three dash zero two six...”

He lets out a shocked yell as he quickly tries to get to his feet knocking over the chairs that he had been sleeping on and falling to the ground, his sudden reaction startling everyone in the room, Eve, Dolly and Zack all staring at him in confusion.

Fitz jumps back to his feet holding up one of the chairs he had been sleeping on and using it to defend himself. “Don’t come any closer!!” He trips over the chair behind him hitting the ground again.

Eve walks up next to Fitz not sure what the heck was going on. “Fitz what is your problem!?”

Zack thinks over the name that Eve had called the racoon. “Fitz...?” He leans down over the fallen chairs looking down at him. “The name Fitz wouldn’t happen to be short for Fifty Six dash Z would it?”

Fitz quickly scrambles to his feet, hopping on spot for a moment to catch his balance before quickly running out of the room, Zack quickly giving chase and running after him. “Wait!”

Eve stares at the doorway they had both exited through confused, she having no clue as what was going on. “What the heck just happened...?”

A loud scream of pain sounds, Dolly quickly running up to the door and yelling out it down the hallway. “Magellan what happened? Are you alright!?”

Zack takes several steps back as he tightly holds onto the wrist that had the bracelet on him, it having sent a shock of electricity through his body when he had gotten too far from Dolly, he unable to continue running after Fitz.

Dolly runs up next to him as she looks down as his shaking hand, it clear to tell that he had somehow been hurt. “That bracelet didn’t happen to hurt you when you went too far from me did it?”

Zack looks away from her not answering Dolly’s question, he looking back to Eve. “How long has he been working here?”

Eve seems surprised to have the topic brought up. “I... don’t know actually... for years I guess, he just showed up out of nowhere when he was just a kid and dad took him in. He’s been here ever since...”

Zack looks back to Dolly. “Do me a favour and start running so I can catch him.”

Both Dolly and Eve seem confused with the request, Eve the one to question him the idea not going well for her. “Catch him!? What did Fitz ever do to get hunted down by the military?”

Zack looks back to Eve assuring her that it wasn’t anything like that. “I’m not hunting him down I just want to talk to him.”

Eve still doesn’t seem pleased with the idea. “About what!?”

Zack looks back to Dolly, the tone in his voice quiet demanding. “Are you going to start moving or aren’t you?”

Dolly nods her head, Zack pretty set on catching this person. “Alright, just don’t hurt him or anything like that.”

The two begin to give chase, Eve following after them. “Wait! What do you two think you’re doing!?”

She is about to run after them but stops when a voice speaks up. “Excuse me but are you Miss. Cadrey? You’re father said that I could find you here. I’m Miss. Lawrence, the one with the fourth grade class.”

Eve quickly turns back to the woman that had just spoken up, it not a very good time for this. “Miss. Lawrence, I-” she looks past her to a group of anxious school children who are talking loudly among themselves and harassing one another as they impatiently waited. There was no way that she could makes these children wait without risk that they would start running amuck in her father’s museum. “Okay then! The tour is it!”

She quickly makes her way over to the group of children intent on getting this done as soon as possible, Eve standing in front of them and talking to them as fast as she could manage. “Alright children welcome to the museum of natural history, I am your guide Miss. Cadrey and we’re walking!”

She begins rushing the children along, a lot of them looking confused with the speedy introduction and sudden start of their tour. Their teacher looking equally confused.

Eve glances back in the direction that Fitz and the two off duty soldiers had disappeared in, there not much she could do about that until this class was dealt with.

Zack and Dolly continue to run down the halls of the museum, Zack heading in the direction that he had seen Fitz go in, coming to a stop and looking down the hall Fitz had gone down only to find it empty. He motions for Dolly to move forward as he begins to make his way down the hall, it branching off into many rooms that held museum exhibits of all kinds.

Dolly turns to Zack she speaking to him hardly above a whisper. “Alright Zack I need you to explain your actions! Just what the heck is going on!?”

Zack doesn’t seem keen on telling her anything. “This doesn’t concern you.”

Dolly frowns coming to a stop. “If you don’t tell me what exactly it is we’re doing then I’m not moving from this spot.”

Zack frowns as he looks back at her, he clearly understanding that if she did that he would not be able to chase after Fitz anymore. “Now is not the time for this!”

“Now is the perfect time for this! Just what are you dragging me into Magellan!?”

Zack begins to look around him, still searching for any sign of Fitz as he spoke. “When I was a kid there was always one that was always managing to escape his room and the guards.”

“One what?”

Zack continues, trying to explain while being as vague as he could. “He would always come to the other rooms to visit the rest of us, than one day he just disappeared and we never saw him again. His name was Fifty Six dash Z, but he always complained that it was too many syllables and to just call him Fitz for short.”

He spots Fitz down one of the halls, he quickly giving chase and running after him, Dolly close behind him. “Fifty Six dash Z...” It was yet another person that had a number for their name. Just like Zack’s original name and the girl that looked like him named Eleven, though this one was a little different, as there was a letter after the number.

Fitz leaps onto one of the large dinosaur done exhibits starting to climb up it, Zack leaping up and doing the same, Dolly stopping as she watches the two of them go. “What are you doing!? You don’t honestly expect me to-”

Zack yells down at her not having time to wait for her to continue hesitation like this. “Get up here before you start sending electric currents through my body again!”

Dolly lets out a growl as she starts climbing up after them, it feeling completely wrong to be climbing around on top of priceless exhibits like this.

Eve turns towards the room the dinosaur exhibits where in, leading the class along with her. “And this room is where we-” She stops when she sees Fitz, Zack and Dolly all climbing the exhibits, she quickly turning the group away from the room before they could look inside to see this and walking past it. “This room is not important!!! And we’re walking! Come on everyone keep up now!”

Fitz reaches the balcony of the second floor of the museum, Zack and Dolly arriving there soon after him and beginning to chase him, Zack calling out to him as he followed. “Fitz stop!”

Fitz leaps onto the glass casing of one of the exhibits, moving from one glass casing to another until he finds himself high above his pursuers, he looking back down to them as he begins yelling at them. “Why should I stop? So that you can catch me and drag me back that iron fortress!? I don’t think so!”

Dolly seems confused. “Iron fortress? What are you talking about? We’re not going to take you anywhere we just want to talk!”

Fitz gives an amused smirk. “Talk? I doubt that!” He looks over to Zack. “Combat models like him are not designed to negotiate.”

“Combat models?”

Zack yells back up at him. “This has nothing to do with that! Just calm down for a moment so that we can talk!”

Fitz still doesn’t look to want to move from the safe spot he had found, Zack and Dolly not wanting to climb the glass exhibits for fear they might break them while trying. “You’re just trying to throw me off my guard so that you can catch me while I’m off it. Don’t think I don’t know how you all work.”

Dolly speaks up, though she knew that Zack would never provide her with an answer when she confronted him on it perhaps the same would not be so for Fitz. “You’re a super soldier aren’t you? Same as him.”

Fitz laughs at the accusation. “A Super solider? Just like Twenty Six there? Me? I’m hardly what you would call a soldier. Unlike your friend there I wouldn’t know how to hold a weapon let along fend for myself in a fist fight.”

Zack grows tired of standing around and doing nothing, he now climbing the glass cased exhibits to reach Fitz. Fitz panicking as he watches him make his way up. “What are you doing!? Break any of this and Mr. Cadrey will have your head on a platter!”

Zack makes a grab for him, Fitz quickly jumping down from where he was standing, landing back on the ground and running away, Zack jumping down after him and giving chase once more.

Dolly follows alongside Zack as he chases after Fitz, she now intent on catching him as well, clearly he knew the answers concerning Zack that she was looking for.

Fitz jumps over the railing off the second floor and onto another exhibit on the first level, Zack and Dolly following suit. Dolly though not quite as well balanced as the other two and slipping and falling.

Eve is still dealing with her tour, she holding her hand to one of the exhibit’s behind her. “Back before the thousand year ice storm-” She is cut off when she hears a crashing sound followed by Dolly’s painful scream, this catching the attention of all of the children she was trying to speak to.

“What was that!?”

“I sounded like somebody dying!”

“I think it came from over there!”

Eve panics she not sure of what to do at first, she not wanting the children to run off and see what was happening. “Oh, uhh...” She quickly points down the hall. “Children! Our specialty exhibit we have on now is the candy through the ages! It’s just right down that hall”

The children all scream excitedly as they race down the hallway, their teacher panicking as she races after them trying to get them back under control.

Eve leaves the school tour quickly running to where the sound had come from to find Dolly pushing herself off of the ground while Zack continues to chase Fitz around atop the museum exhibits, she panicking when she saw this. “Fitz! What are you doing!? My father is going to kill you if he sees you doing this! Heck forget my father I’m going to kill you for using my family’s collection as a jungle gym!!”

Fitz doesn’t stop as he takes a second to glance back down at her. “You don’t get it Eve! Do you have any idea what it was like in the iron fortress!? I’m not going back there!”

Zack yells over at him he not associated with that place. “I’m not going to take you back there! I’m not working for them I got out just like you did! And even if I was still working there despite my orders I would never drag back someone that managed to escape that hell!”

Fitz stops looking back to him. “You expect me to believe that!?”

Eve shakes her head none of this making sense. “What are you two talking about!?” She looks over to Dolly hoping to get an explanation from her. “What are they talking about!?”

Dolly shakes her head really not having a clue she trying to keep as close to Zack as possible from her position on the ground as to not activate the bracelet again. “I’m not entirely sure myself exactly...”

Zack rushes forward while Fitz is distracted by Eve, leaping at him and catching onto him, causing them both to fall of the exhibits and hit the ground, Dolly and Eve immediately running over to them to see if they were both alright.

“Fitz! Are you alright?”

“Magellan what are you doing!?”

*******

Eve, Dolly, Zack and Fitz are now sitting in the break room of the museum again, a heavy silence in the air as Fitz and Zack just stare at each other.

Dolly sighs as she speaks up. “Come on Zack, we’ve finally got him to stop running, just talk to him will you?”

Fitz frowns as he looks from Zack and over to Dolly. “I’m not talking to him!”

Eve glares over at Fitz. “Just talk to him Fitz or he’s not going to go away!!”

Fitz sighs as he looks back to Zack. “You don’t understand the situation...”

Zack continues to stare at Fitz. “How did you escape?”

Fitz quickly turns back to Zack. “Like I’m going to answer that question! You claimed that you escaped so why would you need to know how I did it.”

Zack seems annoyed with the accusation. “I never said that I escaped! I just said that I got out.”

Fitz shakes his head that not making any sense at all, there no way that anyone would just be let go without having to escape. “How could you possibly have gotten out if you didn’t escape?”

“To put it simply my batch didn’t pass or meet the quality standards. We were terminated.” Fitz falls silent as he stares back at Zack while he continues to explain. “I woke up in cold storage among the lifeless bodies of my brothers and sisters. The only reason I got out was because I had managed to live through my execution.”

Fitz looks away, he could clearly tell that Zack was not making this up. “Right... so then I guess you really aren’t with them are you?”

Eve speaks up she catching onto something. “Wait a minute.” She looks over Zack. “Shiya said something about you being a super soldier. Don’t tell me that’s actually real, and that Fitz here is one too.”

Zack looks back to Eve. “He’s not a super soldier, super soldiers had purely numerical identification tags.”

Dolly looks back to Zack, he pretty much finally admitting to what he had been avoiding to confirm or deny all this time. “So then you really are a super solider?”

Fitz sighs as he begins to clear the situation up a bit. “We came from the same place true enough, but I’m not a super soldier. I mean come on, do you really think I would make a half good solider let alone a super one?” He looks back toward Eve and Dolly. “I wasn’t anything created in a laboratory like he was, I was born from real parents not a test tube. I was there for harvesting purposes. Where do you think they got the genes and cells to make the super soldiers out of?”

Eve and Dolly look to one another, they really not knowing anything about any of this.

Zack looks back to Fitz. “You still haven’t answered my question. How did you escape?”

Eve looks over to Zack, going along with the facts that were right now being presented to her and not fighting against them as she would have done before if ever thrown into a situation like this. “Does that really matter at this point? You’re both already out anyway.”

Zack looks over to Eve. “It does matter!! Of all the us that were in there, of all the ones that tried to escape none of them were able to make it!” He looks back to Fitz. “But him, Fifty Six dash Z, who isn’t even a super solider, who is hardly anything and at the time was just a little kid, he managed to do what no super soldier or any other creation made in those laboratories was able to do!”

Fitz looks back to Zack. “And what would you do if I gave you this information? What good would it do you? You’re already out.”

Zack gets up from his chair, his voice raised. “And what about the rest of them?”

Fitz laughs at the question. “Well look at you, a super solider playing the part of a hero. Can’t say I’d ever thought I’d see the day, seeing as you guys were generally trained in the only look out for number one type attitude. Look Twenty Six... or wait, I guess it’s Zack now right? Look Zack, you know as well as I do just how fast they were terminating you guys. Heck half of you guys were gone before I ran away, do you honestly think that anyone is going to be left after all these years? The true bloods would have moved onto another project with a much lower failure rate, they’re not going to let themselves get held back or stuck on one project.”

Zack continues to argue with him. “There were two other groups left when mine got terminated.”

Fitz nods his head. “And just how long ago was that? You didn’t escape very recently if you’re this healthy after being terminated, I mean what they did to terminate you guys wasn’t exactly something you could just get up from after all was said and done, it must have been years ago. Mark my words they’re not going to be around anymore. Trust me I’m keeping this information from you for your own good. The only thing that’s going to happen if you go back there will be your own very brutal death.”

Zack doesn’t seem pleased, Fitz turning away from him. Fitz was right, it had been years since he and Eleven had managed to survive through their execution, the chances that anyone would be left from the project was almost impossible, not unless one of the two batches ended up being perfect, and in all reality there wasn’t a single person alive who could even be considered close to perfect.

Fitz leans back in his chair. “If you want my suggestion then stop looking back, it’s not going to do you any good.  You got out didn’t you? You should be happy, frolicking in your freedom and living out your life to its fullest and all that while you still can, because there’s no telling when they’ll find you and either bring you back to that place or finish you off like they started.”

Raven Wolf - 03 - The Warriors - Chapter 05
Raven Wolf - 03 - The Warriors - Chapter 07
Book 3 in the Raven Wolf series.

Due to human negligence the world as we know it has ended and been reborn. The animal spirits that guide man giving them the forms of animals so that they would be able to survive in this new wilderness. Though now carrying the form of beasts man has not forgotten the place they once had, as an existence greater then just what nature wanted of them, an existence above all.

Those that worked to gain their humanity are known as domestics, while those who wished to follow the rolls the spirits had given them were known as wilds. Both groups grew arrogant and hateful of one another, the wilds saw the domestics as selfish monsters, for they were returning to the ways that had once destroyed the world, while the domestics saw the wilds as primitive beings afraid of progress, they no better than wild animals.

The raven and the wolf spirits grew tired of the destruction and fighting, and sided with the wilds in their ideals, the domestics only capable of further destroying nature. In their anger they marked a tribe of wilds with a curse, they being removed from the sacred circle of life, unable to hunt or grow their own food, their souls never able to move on while their bodies are unable to return to the earth when they died. The curse upon them only broken once the domestics are gone once and for all. The cursed tribe now known to all by the name of the spirits whom cursed them. ‘Raven Wolf'
