With an election year coming up, I thought it would be fun to make a social/political graph for my characters. I am not a political scientist, I did this out of my own interpretation so it may not fall in line with a textbook political spectrum. Still, it should make sense and I'd be happy to answer any questions. It was fun getting into my characters' heads to find out where they fit. Something I've learned in life is that, just because someone shares your social and political views doesn't mean you'll get along with them. The same can be said for my characters.
VERTICAL AXIS: Role of government.
-Above the origin indicates a gradually bigger government or a socialized system. The extreme of this would be a totalitarian regime where the government controls all aspects of society.
-Below the origin indicates a gradually smaller government, a system controled more by the people. The extreme of this would be anarchy, where there is no governing body, basically everyone for themselves.
HORIZONTAL AXIS: Society and values.
-To the right of the origin indicates a gradually more conservative society. This means more established morals, rules, codes of conduct, and a resistance to change. The extreme of this would be an unquestioned blind alligence to all established rules, values, and beliefs, even if facts indicate otherwise.
-To the left of the origin indicates a gradually more liberal society. This means morals, rules, and codes of conduct can be open to interpretation and change as needed. The extreme of this would be to question or act contrary to all established rules, values and beliefs, even if doing so could be detrimental to a healthy society.
CHARACTERS: In order of appearance throughout the comic.
Chucky-Centered on the vertical axis because he hasn't formed any views of government, it's just something that's there. Socially he is slightly right of center. He has a very accepting and disarming nature about him, but he is a follower of rules and prompt at his responsibilities. He also expects things in life to work a certain way and fit a certain mold. Although he is very adaptable to change, it causes him a little frustration and fear to do so.
Adam- Halfway up the vertical axis, he believes in a strong government that involves itself and looks after its citizens when it comes to education, public safety, and general well being. The government and its visible representatives should be strong positive role models. Socially Adam is slightly left of center. Very responsible, he follows rules unless he thinks they are questionable, then they should be openly challenged or broken. He believes everyone is their own person and should follow their heart. Accepts and adapts to changing situations easily.
Kev- Perfectly centered on both axis, he is very naive. No opinion on government. Socially he accepts everyone at face value with no prejudice, unless a prior idea has been planted in head by someone he trusts. Expects nothing out of situations, just takes life as it comes.
Ian- Believes in small government that only involves itelf with neccessary defense and international affairs. Education, law, and commerce should be controled regionally by communities and private entities. He is definitly a conservative, believing in cohesive social values, personal responsibility, and following rules. He is very accepting of others, but not very open minded to venturing outside of his own comfort zone.
Dave- Views society like a dog pack, with government being the alpha male. The government should be strong, influential, trusted, followed loyally, and always have the nation's(the pack's) best interests a top priortity. A weak government should be overthrown immediately. Dave is very accepting, but still socially conservative. He believes in following rules, laws, and morals established by society and doing what's good for the pack.
Merry- A real political liberal. Believes the government should handle most aspects of society because they are too complicated for individuals to deal with. Socially she's pretty liberal, very accepting of people and open minded to new things. But she's somewhat distrusting of 'squares' and enjoys being rebelious just for the sake of shock.
Nimsha-Grew up under a communist regime and believes in a powerful government that controls most aspects of society to maintain a healthy country. This includes morals, laws, commerce, social servies, education, military, and values. She cannot imagine it any other way. She is a social conservative, believing in strict values, rules, code of conduct, and a world view that she never thought to question. Nimsha has a big heart and is very brave, she confronts change head on.
Jenny- Believes in a stong responsible government that looks after its citizens by providing education, social services, good role models, and a strong defense of national interests. She is very much an individualist, believing everyone should follow their own plan and live by their own acceptable morals. But I place her slightly right of center because she also believes in strict adherence to established rules and good social morals and behavior.
Kitchy- A true capitalist. He believes government should be no more than a figurehead, a symbol, or at the very most a spokesperson representing the nation. All aspects of society from education, military, infrastructure, social services, law enforcement, and commerce should be handled by private entities for profit, and control should be in the hands of those who attain it. Kitchy is socially neutral and judges all those he meets based on how they treat him. If you're good to him, you've got a friend for life.
Parsippany-Believes government sybolizes oppression and intrusion and should only handle peaceful international affairs. All other aspects of society including infrastructure, education, social services, and commerce should be handled by the community for the community. She is socially liberal, a strong individualist and an anticonformist. Believes morals and values should be individual and never established. Established morals should be openly defied.
Kyra- Believes that government is a neccessary evil for a functioning nation, she holds strong contempt for authority figures and symbols of power, both governement and private. Thinks society's functions should be in the hands of the people, but regulated so that none every become too powerful or corrupt. Socially Kyra is a liberal, but not as much as she'd like to be. She wants everyone to follow their own morals, values, and likes to openly defy established norms herself. But deep down she fears the darkness that can be in people's hearts, so she reluctantly accepts the need for established rules, morals, and values.
Terry- Practically a true anarchist. Believes government is nothing more than a desire for domination over others and that everyone should do as they please. Doesn't think practially when it comes to things like how a society functions in general. Terry is socially very liberal and has a heart of gold. She considers established morals, rules, and social values completely pointless and generally ignors them. She believes in following your heart and doing what makes you happy, because you only live once
