My first solo was on October 12, 1996 at McChesney Field in San Luis Obispo, CA. Very few things have compared to it since. I was nervous as hell, but once in the air I felt like I was on top of the world.

"This is fun"
Fuck yeah it is Chucky.

Although not the same a s flying, I remember the exact same "oh wow" when I made my first Amateur Radio contact as a Novice in 1968.

What kind of range was that first contact?
Furlips
5 years, 12 months ago
I don't remember to tell ya the truth, but I vaguely think it was within 50 miles or so.

Still, it was quite exciting.
Just like that first time circling around the airport solo is just as exciting as flying down to Los Angeles. ;-)

I remember my first solo in 1999. No better feeling of accomplishment.

I agree. But the subsequent solos to other airports are pretty high up there as well.

I think a close tie was my first solo when I bought my plane.

What kind of airplane?
alphawolf70

Mooney M20K. Was a lot of airplane for a 120 hr pilot at the time!
Chucky
5 years, 11 months ago
Oh hell yeah that's a lot of airplane for a 120 hour pilot. I've got a bunch of time in Mooney M20J models, what an awesome design they are! How long did you own it for? Or do you still have it??
alphawolf70
5 years, 11 months ago
Sold the 231 and upgraded to a 252 which I still own. Awesome plane, and am working on my commercial now, and instructor ratings next!

If I ever owned an airplane, Mooney is pretty high on the short list of airplanes I'd actually own. What airport are you flying out of? I think owning an airplane will never be more than a fantasy for me.

gravity? never heard of it!
MviluUatusun
5 years, 12 months ago
Gravity is just a theory.  Always remember, it isn't gravity that makes you fall, it's mutual attraction.  Right?
PrysmTKitsune
5 years, 12 months ago
mutual attraction is the old theory, no gravity works by distorting space around sufficently massive objects the common explination is to imagine space like a stretched sheet of cloth, drop a ball onto that cloth and the heavier the ball is the deeper an indentation in the cloth it makes, the deeper the distortion in space, the more gravity an object has your not really being pulled down, your falling towords the most masive nearby objects center of mass, in the case of us, thats the big ball of rock lava and metal under our feet

if he was a dog his tail would be waging so hard there wouldnt be anything left of the back of his chair, also unintentionaly naughty imagery here, only a perv like me would notice it more then likely but still the straight on image of him holding the stick the control stick hes griping rather tightly lines up rather perfectly with where another 'stick' would be if he was feeling randy hehe.
Chucky

He's soloed that stick many times already. You're not the only one, my wife and I were joking about it off and on yesterday before I posted it.

Envious... I have, on only one occasion, had a chance to pilot a small plane at cruising altitude, over a major city (Portland, Oregon, USA), with the certified pilot / plane’s owner standing by at the dual controls but not touching them, just in case I screwed up. Got to make several turns and altitude changes on my own, but I could never in my life afford a plane, or flying lessons. He also took my wife and I over Mount Saint Hellens in Washington state, several months after that volcano erupted, to see the area devastated by the blast. It was an amazing experience. He did the takeoff and landing, but for several minutes, I was the actual pilot of that plane.

That sounds like a great experience. I've lived here in the PNW for almost 5 years and I still haven't seen the inner crater of St. Helens.

The exhilaration must be overwhelming.

Also, may I just add that the attention to detail in this comic is quite a spectacle. Everything from the headphones being made for the proper kind of ears to the chairs accommodating tails. Mad props, these are things even Disney too often overlooks.
Chucky

Thanks! I couldn't imagine the world in any other way. I mean, I still probably cheat here and there. But given a mass population with all shapes and sizes of heads and tails, the ergonomics of many everyday objects would be quite different.
LordOrin
5 years, 12 months ago
Oh, yeah, you scrape it over with a fine-tooth comb and you're bound to find something to gripe about; but that's just it, right? If it takes a fine-tooth comb, it's detailed enough to be believable. That's how this comic has felt from start to finish: believable. The characters, the world, the drama; it all feels like a living world with living characters dealing with real problems. That's the sign of not just a story worth reading, but a story worth getting lost in. Keep it up!
Chucky
5 years, 12 months ago
I'm glad it's giving you that feel. I think it helps that I'm writing it as if it's something I lived through(partially true) as opposed to a story that I'm pulling out of thin air. Although there are plenty of artists that can do wonders by pulling something out of thin air.
LordOrin
5 years, 12 months ago
You know, I find that the most powerful stories are those with some kind of tie to an honest event. It establishes a firmer grasp on reality and makes it harder to go completely off the rails.

Another thing, if I may be so bold as to offer some personal advice; don't shy away from cliche. When used right it gives the story some degree of familiarity. It's when cliche is overused that it becomes hurtful to the story. Too many writers just instantly jump to the belief that "cliche is the devil" and should be avoided. If it's original, a little cliche won't hurt, particularly if it's to further the plot.

Anyway, I could talk about this stuff all day. I'd hate to talk anyone's ear off about writing theory and all that boring stuff, LOL.
Chucky
5 years, 12 months ago
Considering how much cliche happens in real life, it's not that hard to do. Like you said, it just needs to be well placed and not overused.
