Chapter Thirteen

“Father!!”

Iuana outstretches her arms as she happily runs forward leaping onto Shiya and latching onto him, the weight from her body throwing him back and bringing them both crashing to the ground. “Father I missed you so much! I was so worried about you! You didn’t get hurt trying to escape the domestic military did you?”

Eve stares at the scene in shock, that certainly an unconventional way of greeting the leader of your people, even if they were related. “My goodness... this is a little unorthodox isn’t it?”

Shiya sits up, pushing Iuana back off of him. “Please Iuana... get off of me...”

Iuana looks away from her father and to the collection of people that were right now watching them, she realizing now that in her excitement she had acted in a very disrespectful manner towards her tribe’s leader in front of all these people. She clears her throat, a little embarrassed that she had not controlled her excitement better. “Oh... sorry father, I was just so happy to see you. When I was locked up in the domestic’s city I thought that I would never see you again.”

Shiya pushes himself to his feet as he begins brushing the dirt off of his white fur, he turning from Iuana and looking to the other members of the group, placing his hands upon the large skull that hide his face and lifting it so that he could be seen, revealing a white wolf with light blue eyes beneath it. “I am Shiya, leader of Raven Wolf.”

Eve and Teddy stare at him for a moment, Eve leaning towards Teddy as she begins whispering to him. “He’s... not at all how I expected him to look.”

Teddy shakes his head no. “No... not at all...”

Eve continues speaking to Teddy. “He’s so young looking, with children that are over three hundred years old I thought he would look much older than that.”

Teddy nods his head in agreement. “Yeah... and he’s so small... I was expecting him to be huge and towering like my dad... but he’s only a little bit shorter than Iuana.” He keeps his eyes on Shiya. “Yet... he has a surprisingly deep voice...” He’s ears fall back against his head, he now a little embarrassed. “I can’t believe he was able to beat me so easily...”

Shiya frowns at the comment. “I apologize to not living up to the pictures you both had of me in your minds.”

Eve jumps at the comment a little embarrassed. “Oh you can hear us!? I didn’t expect that!”

Kit laughs as he walks up to Shiya standing next to him. “Don’t worry Shera! I think you’re just great!”

Iuana angrily yells down at the child. “It’s Shiya not Shera!!”

Shiya looks back to Iuana a little surprised by her reaction. “Iuana, there is no need to yell at him.”

Iuana looks back to her father annoyed. “Father! Why aren’t you scolding him for pronouncing your great and powerful name in such a poor manner?”

Shiya frowns really not seeing the need. “It’s just a name...”

“It’s not just a name! It’s your name! The name of the one that graciously leads our people! To pronounce it in such a way is disrespectful.”

Shiya looks back to Kit. “He’ll get it eventually.”

Iuana snarls angrily. “Not if you neglect to tell him that he’s pronouncing it wrong!!”

Shiya takes a step back from Iuana. “Well if you’re really that upset about it...” He looks back to Kit. “My name is Shiya, not Shera.”

Kit sighs not getting why people insisted on telling him this. “That’s what I keep saying... Shera.”

Shiya walks up to Kit kneeling down in front of him. “No... Though I suppose that is pretty close, try not to hold the e sound for so long when you say ‘She’ cut off a little quicker, and instead of ra say ya. With a y not an r.”

Kit stares up at him a little confused. “Shhya?”

Shiya shakes his head no. “No, now you’re just removing the e sound completely, you still want it there, you just don’t want to holding it for as long.”

Kits places his hand on his chin. “Shy-ah?”

Shiya again shakes his head no. “No... now you melding the e and y sound into the same sound. They’re separat. Shi and ya. Just like that.”

Eve turns away from the scene as Kit once again gets it wrong, it a little bit ridicules for her to watch. “Is this guy really Raven Wolf’s leader?”

Teddy shrugs his shoulders. “He must be... I mean... Iuana doesn’t seem to have any doubts that this is her father, and she said a number of times that her father is the leader.”

Eve frowns speaking up to get Shiya’s attention. “Hey! How come you haven’t said anything about Yula or asked to see him yet?”

Shiya gets back to his feet as he looks over to Eve. “Please don’t miss understand me, I would love very much to see him.” He looks over to the figure of the black wolf that was right now fast asleep on the ground. “But it looks as if he is sleeping.”

Eve looks annoyed by the response. “So? You haven’t seen him for three hundred years! Wake him up!”

Shiya shakes his head no. “You can’t wake an oracle up.”

Iuana looks back to her father, this news new to her as well. “What? Why not?”

Shiya looks back to Yula. “The oracle will wake once their vision is complete, if the vision is interrupted and they are woken before it is allowed to finish then the vision will pull back, the oracle will completely forget what it was they have seen.”

Eve’s ears both droop at this information. “Re.... really...?”

Shiya nods his head. “Of course, for that reason an oracle must never be woken, no matter what the situation.”

Eve falls silent, now that she thought about it Yula had always been woken up as to keep to the schedule of the facility. Aside from the vision he had when he had woken in the middle of the night, every other single day Yula had been woken up promptly at 6am in the morning. Even outside of the laboratory when the group had been traveling Yula had always been woken up so that as much ground as possible could be covered in a day. “You... you’re really serious about this...?”

Shiya nods his head. “You bet.”

Teddy is taken aback. “You... bet...?” He stares at Shiya not sure of what to say, when hearing the stories from everyone about the people of the Raven Wolf tribe and its leader, he had thought Shiya to be just as stereotypical a native as he parents were, perhaps even more so because he was supposed to be a three hundred year old chieftain, but the way he was acting and spoke was so far from stereotypical that it was almost like watching a bad actor with an unfamiliar roll in a low budget a movie.

Iuana walks up to her father speaking to him. “Father, these people have helped me and Yula escape the city and make it all the way out here. Please, you must allow them to enter our village.”

Shiya frowns at the request. “Well... I don’t know about that...” He looks back to Teddy and Eve staring at them for a moment, he humming to himself as if it would help him think. “Hummm... yeah ok.”

Teddy frowns. “Wait... that’s it? It didn’t take you very long to make such an important decision like that at all.” He holds his hand to himself. “Regardless of if we helped Iuana and Yula or not, what if we betray you and give the hidden location of your village away!”

Shiya doesn’t look too concerned. “Well... Iuana was going to bring you there without my permission to begin with wasn’t she?” He looks back to his daughter who stood over his shoulder looking at him with a found grin. “To be perfectly honest, it is much more difficult to gain Iuana’s trust than it is mine. If she trusts you than I do not question her judgement.”

Teddy looks back to Iuana, that did actually seem the case, and if Shiya put the situation like that then it really did make sense... in a very simplistic sort of way.

Iuana looks back to Shiya. “Father, there are some things that I wish to ask you about. Will you please hear me out?”

Shiya looks back to Iuana. “Of course.”

Iuana walks over to the camps fire sitting on the ground, Shiya joining and sitting across from her, he soon joined by Kit who sits next to Iuana across from Shiya as well, Teddy and Eve looking at one another before joining them as well, also sitting on the side opposite of Shiya.

Iuana begins her questions. “Alright, when we met the boy Kit, he said that you were contacted by a spirit messenger, and asked to go speak with one of the great spirits.”

Shiya nods his head that indeed the truth. “Yes, that is what happened. The raven spirit wished to speak with me, so I left the village to see him as instructed.”

Kit lets out an aw of amazement. “So then you really saw him!”

Shiya nods his head as he looks over to Kit. “Of course.”

Kit quickly begins to question Shiya, much to Iuana’s annoyance. “What did he look like!! I bet he was real big wasn’t he!! Was he old and wise with a hunched over back, and big walking staff, balding head and a really, really long beard? Or no! Maybe he was tall and mysterious dressed in a black cloak with a mask so that you couldn’t see his face!”

Shiya looks perplexed by Kit’s descriptions. “Raven spirit looks like... a raven.”

“Does he dress in spandex like the superhero ‘Shadow Protector Raven-the unlikely dark hero of justice’ he at least has a mask right?”

Shiya slowly shakes his head no. “No... he... looks like a raven... like a bird. Much like the one that you saw that summoned me.”

Kit looks disappointed with this information. “What...? That’s it? That’s not cool at all.”

Shiya frowns, disappointing as it sounded it was the truth. “Well... I suppose he looks a little larger than a Raven normally would...”

Iuana speaks up once again getting her father’s attention. “Enough of this!! What did Raven Spirit want to talk to you about!? What was his message!?”

Shiya lowers his head. “Several things actually... but mostly to tell me that there are those near my village that have come with the intent to do harm to me and my people. After receiving the warning I returned to the village to warn the tribe, to prevent them from leaving the safety of the village and keep them from possible danger, but when I returned home I discovered that Kit had gone missing shortly after I had left to speak with Raven Spirit. So I left the village in search of him, hoping to find him before the enemy Raven Spirit spoke of did.”

Kit beams up happy to hear that. “You came all the way out here just to look for me because you were worried? You really are the best Shera!”

Iuana seems a little worried about the information that her father had just announced. “Someone with the intent to do harm...? Well that couldn’t be us, even if we have just recently arrived in this area. Raven Spirit is much too wise make the mistake of thinking us to be an enemy.”

Eve speaks up, she now presenting Shiya with a question. “I have a question for you, have you heard of a place called The Eden of North?”

Shiya nods his head as he looks back to Eve. “Yes... that place would be very hard for me to forget.”

Eve continues to question him about this. “Alright then great, what do you know about that place?”

Iuana nods her head also asking her father about this, this something she indeed wanted to know about. “Yes, The Eden of North, the soldiers would speak of something they found in this place, they would ask me time and time again about it but I knew nothing of what they wanted to know or even of the place they spoke of.”

Shiya seems concerned with this information. “The Eden of North...” He closes his eyes. “I believe that it would be better if you did not know of that place or what it was that the domestics may have found there.”

Iuana nods her head. “I understand father...”

Eve though does not seem as convinced as Iuana did, Shiya’s refusal to explain just making her more interested in hearing about it. “Don’t refuse to say anything, this is important!”

Shiya looks back to Eve. “I do not deny that it is important, that is why I cannot speak any further about it.”

Teddy speaks up, it now his turn to question Shiya. “What the heck did you do to me?”

Shiya seems confused by Teddy’s question. “What?”

Teddy begins to explain, reminding Shiya of the fight the two of them had been in not that long ago. “When you attacked me, you did something that knocked me off my feet and sent me flying through the air!”

Shiya now looks to understand what Teddy is talking about. “Oh that. I guess you could call it a special skill of sorts.”

Teddy pushes further wanting to know more about it, whatever it was having been powerful and looking to have not caused Shiya any effort at all. “Okay then... what is this special skill?”

Shiya frowns closing his eyes and turning away, that a clear sign that he did not want to answer the question. “That is a secret.”

Teddy looks annoyed by the response as he begins mumbling to himself under his breath. “Geeze, with someone as lax as him I thought he would have no problem blurting out just about anything like it was casual information... I guess he’s like a chieftain in that respect at least.”

Shiya looks back to Teddy having heard the comment. “Such information is strictly on a need to know bases, and you are not in the need of needing to know. Therefore, you get vague answers or even no answers at all.”

Kit tries hard to hold in his excitement, he eventually bursting out and yelling out loudly to the whole group. “Isn’t Shera awesome!! Just like the superheroes you see on TV!! Except real!!”

Iuana looks over to Teddy, she a little embarrassed by his conduct. “Please Teddy... do not treat my father so disrespectfully.”

Teddy looks back to her, having forgotten for a moment that this man with strange none stereotypical mannerisms and an odd mix of casual and formal way of speaking was indeed her father. “Right... sorry Iuana.”

Shiya looks the group over. “Alright, you’ve each had your turn, now it’s my turn for a question.”

Kit looks over to Shiya while holding his hand to his chest. “Hey I didn’t ask anything!”

Shiya sighs as he tiredly turns back to Kit. “You already asked me more than enough questions... remember when you woke up in the village? You were following me around asking me questions for days.”

Kit nods his head. “Yeah well I’m not finished from then.”

Shiya turns away from Kit and back to the rest of the group. “Lucky me... anyway, are there any more people in your group? Or is it just the four of you, not including Kit of course.”

Teddy shakes his head no, it only being them. “No... it’s just us.”

Shiya nods his head. “Oh, alright.” He sighs to himself as he gets to his feet, lowering his mask upon his head and hiding his face once more. “Then we might have a problem.” He lowers his stance grabbing tightly onto his spear and dashing away from the group, disappearing in the long grass that surrounded the camp they had made.

Iuana seems concerned as she looks the group over, this reaction of his only meaning one thing. “Father senses danger! We need to get out of here and find some place to hide.”

She runs over to Yula to wake him, Kit yelling over her as she did so. “Hey! You’re not supposed to wake him up! Didn’t you hear Shera?”

Yula lets out a tired groan as he slowly opens his eyes, Iuana pulling him to his feet. “We’re in danger! I think that father will agree that being in danger can be used as an exception to the rule.”

Eve too is reluctant to wake Yula up, she wanting to see if he would indeed have a vision when not prompted to wake. “Just because Shiya seems a little concerned does not mean we’re in immediate danger.”

The sound of gunfire fills the air, Eve screaming as she ducks down low to the ground with her arms covering her head, her ears flat against her head.

Yula too cries out in surprise, ducking down and covering his head as his whole body again begins to shake, just like he did the last time he had found himself in this situation. Iuana forcefully pulling him back to his feet and taking him with her.

Teddy stares in the direction that Shiya had gone in, the noise and commotion coming from the direction he had gone off in. “He’s attacking them alone...?”

Kit speaks up excitedly. “Yeah! Isn’t Shiya fearless and great!”

Teddy looks down towards Kit. “I’m not so sure if fearless is what I would call it... perhaps reckless or foolish-” He is cut off when more gunfire sounds.

Eve forces herself to her feet, now not the time for her to play the frightened damsel. “We have to get out of here!”

Iuana does not look happy with this idea. “What about my father! We can’t just leave him.”

A familiar voice calls out to the frightened group. “Mr. Conner!! It’s been a while!”

Teddy turns towards the voice, spotting Zack with several soldiers that followed his orders all begin to surround the area that had been their camp. He looking at him, a little surprised to see him of all people here. “Magellan...?”

Iuana’s expression changes into a hateful glare when she recognises him, she taking the weapon had made for herself and gripping it tightly in her hands as she points it threateningly towards him. “You!”

Zack grins and he looks over to Iuana. “Oh yes, hello to the temperamental yet pretty little wild too.”

Kit looks over to Teddy and Iuana. “Do you know these people?”

Both Teddy and Iuana do not take their eyes off of the skunk, Iuana answering Kit’s question with a snarl. “He is no friend if that is what you mean.”

The sounds of conflict can still be heard in the background, Zack frowning as he tries to ignore the noise. “If you’re wondering Conner, your sister is occupying your new friend.”

Teddy is horrified to hear this information. “Dolly is here!?”

Zack nods his head yes. “Yeah, but enough about me and my party, let’s talk about you guys. Surrender quietly and without incident and no one will get hurt.” He looks toward Kit, taking his gun and aiming it at him. “Well... most of you anyway.”

Zack does not hesitated to pull the trigger, Teddy reacting quickly and drawing the gun he had on him, aiming and firing as quickly as possible, the bullet managing to hit Magellan’s gun and knock it from his hands before he is able to pull the trigger and fire the weapon, Zack frowning as he looks to his hand, it still cut and sore from the last time Teddy had done that to him. “It is so annoying when you do that! I hope you know that!”

The soldiers that follow Zack react quickly to return fire, Iuana leaping forward and attacking them, bowling Zack and several of the other soldiers over.

She looks back to her companions, calling out to them. “Hurry! Run!”

Eve gasps as she grabs onto Yula’s arm, running forward through the opening that Iuana had made as quickly as possible, dragging Yula with her.

Teddy scoops Kit under his arm, carrying him with him as he runs after Iuana as well.

Zack gets to his feet, grabbing a replacement gun from one of his men while looking the others over and giving them his orders. “The only target that can be killed is the kid! Do not harm Conner or Cadrey unless they give you no other option, and under no circumstances is any harm to come to either of the two test subjects!” His soldiers acknowledge his orders as they all begin to give chase.

Zack frowns to himself as he watches the soldiers all disappear one by one, he talking through a headset to them. “Keep tracking them! We’re not losing them!” He begins following them as well, determined to end this assignment here. “Go ahead and run, as long as you have that pretty little wild with you you’ve nowhere to hide.”

Eve and Yula come to a stop, the two of them panting heavily for breath, Iuana coming to a stopping near them, not wanting to leave them behind unguarded, a confused and slightly panicked look on the white wolf’s face. “How did they find us!?”

Teddy looks over to her still carrying Kit under his arm. “In all honestly I’m surprised they didn’t find us sooner.” He looks back in the direction they had just run from. “I think they’ve been tracking us from day one.”

Iuana shakes her head no, she sure she would have noticed something like that. “No one was following us, it’s impossible. I would have seen something!”

Teddy begins trying to explain to Iuana. “Look the military is more advanced then what you’re making it out to be. They know how to keep their distance from their target as to not alert them to being followed, heck they could be stationed in the city and still be following you!”

Eve looks over to Teddy, she trying hard to catch her breath. “He’s right... they knew more than just our position, that soldier didn’t even bat an eyelash when he saw Kit. He expected to find him there because he already knew that Kit was tagging along with us.”

Kit squiggles free of Teddy’s grip. “It must be some kind of super intelligence satellite! I see it all the time on TV! They track you and can find you anywhere on Earth! Sometimes they’re even equipped with death beams that can target you!! There’s no escape from something like that!!” He holds his hands up like he is holding an invisible sniper rifle. “If only we had super charged and powerful laser with a scope that could see into space!! Then we could get rid of it!”

Iuana seems very confused. “A... what...?”

Teddy quickly speaks up. “Although I think Kit is right about there being a satellite, I’m pretty positive that he’s wrong about... everything else.”

Iuana is upset with this information. “So they’re always going to find us?”

Teddy shakes his head no. “No, as impressive as a satellite sounds there’s only so much a piece of equipment like that can do. The earth’s surface is much too vast, and not everything can be seen with on overhead view, buildings, forests, anything that might shelter us, even cloud cover can all hinder this thing’s search, we would have to be out in the open.”

Kit holds his hands to his eyes holding his fingers to look like he was holding a pair of lenses over his eyes. “Unless the satellite has x-ray vision!”

Teddy ignores the comment, he going with the more plausible treat. “The military would need our coordinates to give to the satellite in the first place. Without those it would be too difficult, time consuming and costly to find us. There has to be another factor, something else is giving them our location.”

Yula tries to speak, he still having trouble catching his breath. “So... if they’re tracking us... how are we supposed to escape them?”

Eve shakes her head there no way. “If they have a way of tracking us like Teddy is suggesting than escaping isn’t possible!” She looks back to Teddy and Iuana. “What baffles me is how long it took for them to act. If they were indeed tracking us since the beginning than that means they were waiting for something to happen. What exactly triggered their advance?”

Iuana thinks back to the most recent occurrence. “My father’s appearance... there was no sign of the domestics anywhere until he appeared.”

Eve thinks back before this crazy journey she had been dragged on had started, recalling that general Mort had indeed spoke of Yula’s dream actually being a mock treaty to try and capture this person. “That’s right... General Mort did show an interest in acquiring the leader of Raven Wolf, he also vaguely mentioned that it was something that was proving difficult for him to do.”

Yula looks a little upset over a little detail that had just been brought to light. “Wait... Iuana’s father was here and no one woke me!?”

Eve looks back to Yula. “Don’t you think that now is hardly the time for such a complaint?”

Voices belonging to the soldiers of the domestic military call out, catching the group’s attention. “There they are! I see them!”

Everyone but Yula quickly take off once more, Yula moaning when he hears the guard’s voice. “They found us already!? My sides hurt, I don’t think I can run anymore.” Teddy quickly doubles back to grab onto Yula’s arm and forcefully drag him along with them, Yula ending his whining as he begins running once again.
