Raven Wolf - Book 01 - The Wilds
Chapter Twelve

Zack taps his pen against the table the top of his body is right now flopped on, if there existed a job that was as close to as boring as guard duty it was is surveillance.

A man approaches him handing him a folder and getting. “The latest satellite images sir.”

Zack takes the folder from him. “Yeah, yeah…” He opens the folder looking the image over, Zack letting out a sudden gasp of shock as he falls back out of his chair hitting the ground, the photos that had been in the folder scattering onto the floor.

Dolly looks back to him, this reaction of his not only surprising but very odd. “What’s the matter with you?”

Zack quickly gathers up the photos that had been in the file. “Nothing! Nothing at all!!” He picks up the last photo putting it back in the folder before Dolly could see any of them. “I just leaned too far back in my chair that’s all!” He quickly gets to his feet running out of the room. “I’ll be right back!”

Dolly watches him leave, she then turning to the man that had handed Zack that folder. “What was in that folder you gave Magellan?”

The man shrugs his shoulders it being nothing unusual or new. “Just the satellite images of the group we’re keeping an eye on.”

Dolly frowns, not sure as to why that would cause Zack such alarm. “Bring me a copy of those photos will you.”

The man nods his head. “Of course Miss. Conner, I’ll be back in only a moment.”

*******

General Mort looks over the pictures that had been in the folder that had just recently been handed to him by one of his employees. These a copy of the satellite photos that had concerned Zack, Zack’s voice coming from the speaker phone as he voices his concern with these images. “You can see what I’m talking about right!?”

Mort stares at the photo, he indeed seeing the problem that Zack did, the number of figures in the photo was now equal to five instead of the usual four it had always been before, his eyes right now fixed on the newest addition to the group, the young cougar the group had so recently ran into. “How is this possible?”

Zack’s voice raises, a hint of panic in it. “That kid should be six feet under! I’m the one that was given the order to take him down, I know that I got him!”

General Mort nods his head, he having been there as well to have seen the event for himself. “It’s true that the boy’s body was unable to be recovered after the chaos that had happened that night, but even so if it was you that shot him his wound should have been fatal.”

Zack seems pretty nervous over this new development. “What are we supposed to do? That kid was supposed to have been killed by Raven Wolf not saved by them! That kid’s death is what gave us the funding and permission to locate and attack the Raven Wolf Tribe!”

General Mort closes the folder. “It’s simple enough, don’t let the information get out, and when we do move in to secure the individuals you need simply finish the job you clearly didn’t finish. It’s nothing more complicated than that. If anyone on your team questions your orders or seems like they might make this information public then get rid of them. We’re much too close and at this point, we can’t afford to mess up.”

He places the folder within one of the top drawers of his desk. “On a brighter note, that boy’s presence can only mean one thing. They’re close to the hidden location of Raven Wolf village.” He presses a button on the phone ending the call with Zack there.

*******

Dolly looks over the reprints of satellite images she had just been handed, a confused look on her face when she sees the extra figure among the group. “A boy…? Where did he come from?” She takes a closer look at the child within the image. “He’s not a wild… so how did he end up all the way out there in the middle of nowhere?”

She looks back to the large monitor that currently displays the map and various markers representing not only the groups location, but the locations of towns and land marks as well, there being no indication of any form that there was a village anywhere in that immediate area, but judging from such a young child’s presence, something had to be there, there no way such a young boy would be able to survive very long on his own.

Dolly looks over to one of her men giving them orders. “I want the most up to date satellite images of the surrounding area of our markers current location! I need to know where this child came from!”

“Yes Miss. Conner.”

*******

Kit casually walks among the group, has hands held behind his head as he marches along talking all the way. “Shera’s been teaching me a whole bunch of neat things since I joined Raven Wolf, he told me to that Kit is actually what you would call a young fox, I told him my mom actually named me that cause she said it was short for kitten. You get it? Cause I’m a kind of like a cat right?”

Iuana snaps back at him, she still hating it every time the child pronounced her father’s name incorrectly. “It’s Shiya!! Get it right already!”

Kit nods his head as he looks back at her. “Yeah that’s what I keep saying! Shera!”

Kit continues talking, just as he had been doing since joining the group, he only taking a break from his constant chatter when he had gone to sleep for the night. “I gotta tell ya staying in that village is way different than staying in the city. There’s no TVs or videogames or nothing! I really thought I was going to die! But there are a couple of kids my age in Raven Wolf for me to hang with so  I wasn’t that bored, I was really surprised when I met them, I mean I never see them in any of the reports or stuff like that. I guess they all stay in the village and don’t leave when the rest of the pack goes out to confront the domestics right?”

Teddy nods his head. “Well that sounds about right, anyone that young would never be brought into battle, or what could potentially turn into a battle.”

Kit looks back to Teddy. “It’s not all fighting you know. Shera said that sometimes they just go to meet the domestics to talk too.”

Iuana looks over to Kit those efforts very important. “My father is well aware of how impossible it is for our people to be victorious against the domestics, he is seeking to end the violence and has been to many talks about it. Although now we know that the all of those talks were just a farce… the domestics have no intention of being on peaceful terms with us. The fighting will just continue until every member of my tribe falls.”

Kit grins as he looks over to Iuana. “I don’t know about that! Shera is really strong! I bet he could take out the whole army if he really wanted to!”

Iuana frowns at the comment. “If that were true Raven Wolf would not be in the situation it’s in now.” She snaps back at Kit. “And it’s Shiya not Shera!”

Kit looks back to Teddy and the others. “So are you guys all from Raven Wolf too?”

Yula smiles at the boy as he answers his question. “Not everyone. Iuana is, and just recently I discovered that I am! But Teddy and Eve aren’t, they’re from the domestic city like you are.”

Kit looks the group over. “So, just you and Iguana are from Raven Wolf then?”

Iuana cuts in front of Kit’s path stomping her foot on the ground as she glares down at the child. “What did you call me!?”

Kit looks back to her. “Iguana.”

Iuana promptly corrects him. “Iuana! My name is Iuana.”

Kit stares up at her. “Oh really, it’s Iuana? That does sound a lot like Iguana though.”

Eve stares at Kit as Iuana and him begin to argue with one another, a concerned look on her face. From what she could recall the military had deliberately harmed the boy with the intent to kill him and then blame his death on the wilds, because of that farce the military had got a lot of support from both the government and people in the city that were outraged by the incident. If the military were to discover that this small child was alive then their facade would be exposed, and there’s no telling what would happen after that.

If the military found out that Kit was indeed alive, then they would do whatever it took to make sure that the truth of their actions remained a secret, and that meant that Kit’s life was still in danger.

Yula speaks up, interrupting the argument between Iuana and Kit to speak with his sister. “Can we take a break from walking? My legs are killing me.”

Kit frowns as he stops in front of Yula making his hands into fists and placing them on his hips, his ears back against his head as his tail lashes from side to side angrily. “Listen here you! Stop your whining and keep marching! We’re not stopping until we reach the Raven Wolf village! We’re almost there you know! I know for sure! Everything’s starting to look familiar now!”

Yula looks around him, everything around them looking exactly the same as it had all the other days they had been traveling. “What are you talking about? Everything looks exactly the same.”

Iuana looks back to Yula. “He’s right you know, we’re close and should reach my village by the end of the day if we’re lucky, more than likely we’ll end up arriving early tomorrow since you need so many breaks.”

Yula hangs his shoulders. “I can’t help it… all this walking makes me really sore and tired.”

Teddy smiles at Yula, he the only one of the group that would periodically complain about being sore and tired. “You’re being outdone by a kid now Yula, you’ve really got to shape up already.”

Kit looks over to Teddy a little annoyed by his comment. “Hey I’m not a kid! I’ll have you know that in half a year I’m going to thirteen, and do you know what that will make me? A teenager! That’s pretty much an adult you know!”

Iuana frowns at the comment. “You’re still far off from being an adult!”

Kit looks back to Iuana defensively. “Why do you keep yelling at me so much!? Are you crazy or something!?”

Eve walks ahead of them the group having to keep moving forward if they were planning on getting anywhere. “Let’s just keep moving forward alright?”

Kit looks back to Iuana with a frown once more before following Eve’s advice. “I’m telling Shera all about how mean you’ve been to me when we find him.”

Iuana yells at him angrily. “It’s Shiya!!”

*******

Night soon falls, the group stopping their journey for the moment to set up camp and take a break from their traveling to sleep. Yula much too tired to continue traveling any longer, the black wolf now laying on the ground looking almost dead, his moaning the only sign he was still alive.

Eve kneels down next to Yula as she begins trying to give him words of encouragement. “Just give yourself some time, you’ll get used to the outdoors before you know it, then you’ll look back to times like now and just laugh them off.”

Yula doesn’t look up at her, he not wanting to move at all right now. “If I live through the night anyway…”

Eve shakes her head, Yula in no danger of dying from walking. “I’m pretty sure you’ll live through the night.”

Iuana walks up next to Teddy, taking the gun she had taken from him and holding it out to him to return. “I suppose that I should give this back to you. I’d forgotten that it was actually yours until now.”

Teddy turns toward Iuana upon hearing her voice, his head hitting the gun that Iuana was holding out to him, Teddy quickly jumping back and holding his right eye, the weapon having jabbed him in the eye when he had turned.

Iuana leans down next to him looking him over. “Didn’t you see me standing there? I thought that you said you could see with your right eye!”

Teddy nods his head that indeed the truth. “Yeah… it just sometimes it doesn’t work so well when it’s really dark out.” He opens his eye blinking a few times before looking back to Iuana. “Nothing to worry about, just a little soar and watery but still working just fine.”

Iuana sighs to herself a little embarrassed over what had just happened while Teddy looks back to the weapon she had offered to him. “You can keep that if you want, I already got another that’s working for me just fine.”

Iuana looks down at the weapon a little shocked that he would let her keep such a thing.. “Really? You don’t mind if I keep this?”

Teddy shakes his head no it not a problem at all. “Yeah it’s yours, although it really isn’t anything special, just the standard weapon for security personnel like me.”

Iuana looks the weapon over. “But it’s so intricate, no one in my tribe could ever craft something like this.”

Teddy smiles at her finding it cute that she found something like that to be amazing. “Just out of curiosity… do you have any idea of how to use something like that?”

Iuana correctly holds the weapon in her hands, aiming it ahead of her like any well trained member of the military. “No, I don’t know how to use it… only how to hold it.” She looks back to Teddy. “The domestics attack our people with weapons such as these all the time, so I was at the least able to pick up that much.”

Teddy laughs at her giving her a shrug of his shoulders. “Well… I guess that’s just fine for scaring your hostages, but it’s not going to help you that much in battle.”

Iuana nods her head having understood that much. “That is why I crafted a spear.”

Kit walks up to the two of them, interrupting the moment between them as he tugs on the sleeve of Teddy’s uniform to get his attention. “I need to have a talk, just you and me man to man.”

Iuana glares at the child not happy with having her conversation with Teddy interrupted by him. “I would hardly label you as a man!”

Kit glares over at Iuana. “You’re not a man! I wasn’t talking to you!”

*******

Kit kicks at a rock on the ground, he and Teddy now a distance away from the group so that they could talk in private. “That Iuana girl sure gets angry easily.”

Teddy nods his head that indeed true when you weren’t on Iuana’s good side. “Well, in our group Yula is the only one she didn’t attack or hold at gun point before getting to know us, she’s just bad at making first impressions I think.”

Kit nods his head. “I totally understand what you’re talking about, that crazy girl attacked me too the first time I saw her.” He looks back to Teddy. “,So what do you think of her? From what I can tell you two seem to be really close.”

Teddy smiles at the question. “I like her just fine. She’s beautiful, strong and not afraid to say what’s on her mind.”

Kit again nods his head. “Alright so you do like her, I can respect that.”

Kit lets out a sigh, he looking back to Teddy and questioning him on the real reason he had brought him out here. “So do Dad and everyone back home really think that I’m dead?”

Teddy nods his head to confirm. “Yeah, there was even a report on the news about it, everyone back home is pretty angry over it, a lot of people want the military to take action against the wilds.”

Kit seems sad, he not really understanding how it would have turned out this way. “I don’t get it… it was supposed to be for peace… now everything’s going in the opposite direction.”

Teddy begins to explain. “Well everyone thinks that it was the wilds that killed you.”

Kit frowns making his hands into fists. “Well that’s not true!!” He holds his arms stiffly on either side of him as he yells up at Teddy. “Shera and the others would never do anything to hurt me!! With the exception of that Iuana girl everyone in Raven Wolf is really nice to me, especially Shera, why he’s probably the nicest guy I’ve ever met!”

Kit begins to look around him. “Which way is the city!? This is all my fault because everyone thinks that I’m dead! I’ve got to tell dad and the others that I’m just fine!”

Teddy places his hand on Kit’s head. “Hold on for a moment, don’t go rushing into things, if you just take off like that then you really are going to be dead. First things first, we reach the Raven Wolf village, then we’ll decide what to do after that.”

Kit pulls away from Teddy this important. “But I’ve got to! What if a big fight starts because everyone thinks that I’m dead? Lots of people are going to get hurt if that happens!”

Kit turns away from Teddy beginning to run, Teddy chasing after him to try and stop him. “Hold on Kit even if I did let you do something as reckless as that you’re running in the wrong direction! You’re just going to get yourself lost.”

Kit doesn’t stop running Teddy gaining ground and catching up with him, reaching out his arm to grab into Kit to stop him when suddenly a flash of movement from his right catches his attention, Teddy turning his head just as something leaps into him, tackling him and bringing him to the ground, the two bodies rolling over a few times before coming to a stop.

Teddy holds his head in pain, having hit it when being thrown down. “What the heck was that?” He opens his eyes, his gaze meeting the bald of a spear that is right now being held at his head. Sitting on Teddy’s chest pinning him to the ground with weapon drawn was a white wolf wearing a large headdress made from a bird’s skull and large feathers that masked his appearance. “Oh this is not good…”

Teddy reaches past the blade of the spear, grabbing onto the weapon and forcefully pulling it to the side, throwing it’s wielder off of him and onto the ground, both Teddy and his attacker getting back to their feet holding their weapons in front of them defensively to keep the other at a distance.

Teddy is sure to keep his gun aimed at the figure before him, his attacker obviously knowing exactly was this weapon was and holding his ground for the moment, Teddy taking this time to try and explain. “I know that probably looked really bad, someone dressed in military uniform chasing after a kid the military had before tried to kill, but you’ve got to believe me when I tell you that I had no intention of harming him.”

Teddy looks the figure in front of him over, there no mistaking who this person was. “You’re Shiya right?” The white wolf’s tail gives a nervous twitch, while the threatening growl answers Teddy’s question. “That’s got to be a yes… Iuana’s growling sounds almost exactly the same.”

The white wolf takes his right hand off of his weapon, spreading his fingers and throwing his arm forward, Teddy gasping when he is hit by something, a freezing cold surrounding his body as he lifts high into the air as he is thrown back, and then unpleasantly hits the ground.

Teddy bares his fangs as he tries to get to his feet, he not exactly sure what the heck had just happened, to all accounts it felt like someone had hit him with a baseball bat, a baseball bat that just happened to be very large brick wall.

Kit runs up next to Teddy, and excited tone in his voice as he kneels down next to him. “Wow did you ever fly far! That was so cool!”

Teddy looks back to Kit. “What the heck happened?” He looks around him the white wolf that was attacking him nowhere in sight.

Kit looks up from Teddy lifting his hand and waving to someone far in the distance. “Hey Shera! Don’t attack him anymore ok! Teddy is a good guy like us!”

Teddy turns in the direction that Kit is waving in, spotting the white wolf standing far from where the two of them currently were. “How did he get all the way over there so fast?”

Kit looks back to Teddy with a laugh. “What are you talking about? He never moved, you’re the one that went flying back this far.”

Teddy frowns still holding onto his sore head. “Yeah… I suppose I do recall flying through the air…” He looks back to Shiya, the white wolf now starting to approach him, Teddy pushing himself up to his feet keeping his eyes on him.

Shiya comes to a stop in front of Teddy, pointing his spear toward him to keep him at a distance and holding his ground, Teddy raising his arms to either side of him to show that he had no intentions of fighting with him.

Shiya looks Teddy’s figure over before beginning to speak in a deep and threatening tone of voice. “What business does a soldier of the domestic military have here?”

Teddy grins sheepishly as Shiya. “Actually… I’m not a soldier… I’m just a security guard.”

Kit speaks up, talking to Shiya in a happy tone of voice. “Teddy is helping Iuana get back home to your village Shera!”

Shiya keeps his gaze on Teddy. “Iuana… you are helping Iuana?”

Kit nods his head, that the truth. “Yeah! Not just Iuana, he’s helping Yugi out too!”

Teddy’s eyes move back to Kit. “Actually… his name is Yula.”

Kit looks back to Teddy. “Oh really? And here I thought it was Yugi the whole time!”

Teddy’s ear twitches back. “You’re not that good with names are you?”

Kit smiles back at Teddy. “I got your name right the first time didn’t I? It’s Teddy! Like a fluffy stuffed teddy bear.”

Teddy’s ears falls back against his head as he tries not to get annoyed with the comment. “Yeah… exactly like that…”

Shiya stands up straight, removing his body from his defensive stance, he interrupting the two while they spoke. “Yula!?”

Teddy looks back to Shiya. “Yeah, Yula… Iuana was pretty surprised too when she heard that name. I guess you guys thought that he’s been dead for around three hundred years.”

*******

Zack is seated upside down on his chair, his back on the seat while his legs hung over the chair’s back.

Dolly frowns as she stares at him, she absolutely insulted by how lightly he was taking this mission. “You’re going to pass out from all your blood running to your head.”

Zack takes a folder that is being handed to him by one of the soldiers that follow under him and Dolly, the file yet again another set of satellite images on the group they were following. “You know that almost sounds nice compared to waiting for this group to find that stupid village already.”

He opens the folder looking at the pictures inside. “Why are there only three of them? Where did Teddy and that kid go?” He lets out an excited gasp as he quickly tries to get up, only managing to make himself fall off the chair.

Dolly sighs as she looks back to him. “Now what…?”

Zack excitedly looks back to his men. “Alright I want everyone and everything ready to move in ten!”

Dolly gets up from her chair walking over to Zack. “What’s the big rush?”

Zack hands her the folder he had been looking at. “No more sulking around in the shadows following them around as we wait for them to reach their location.”

Dolly opens the folder to look at the photo’s for herself, the image though not one of a village as she had been expecting, it looking as of the group was still continuing with their travels, the professor and the two test subjects sitting down to rest for the night, Teddy and the boy that had joined them the day before not among them, Dolly scanning the photo for them soon locating the two, along with another figure.

Zack begins to explain to Dolly as he points down to the figure that confronted Teddy in the photo. “That’s the big target right there! Raven Wolf’s leader! We don’t have to wait for them to reach the village with him there! All the targets are all neatly in one place just waiting for us!”

Dolly nods her head, this indeed a good thing. “This is convenient. If we surround and subdue them outside of the village we can greatly limit the number of casualties on both their side and ours. The less people involved in this the better.”

Zack nods his head excitedly. “Yeah sure, less casualties whatever, more importantly the end of this boring mission!”

Dolly looks back to Zack, there still something that was concerning her. “What about that child?”

Zack holds his hand to his chest. “Just leave the kid to me, I’ll make sure he’s taken care of through this whole ordeal.”

Raven Wolf - 01 - The Wilds - Chapter 11
Raven Wolf - 01 - The Wilds - Chapter 13
Due to human negligence the world as we know it has ended and been reborn. The animal spirits that guide man giving them the forms of animals so that they would be able to survive in this new wilderness. Though now carrying the form of beasts man has not forgotten the place they once had, as an existence greater then just what nature wanted of them, an existence above all.

Those that worked to gain their humanity are known as domestics, while those who wished to follow the rolls the spirits had given them were known as wilds. Both groups grew arrogant and hateful of one another, the wilds saw the domestics as selfish monsters, for they were returning to the ways that had once destroyed the world, while the domestics saw the wilds as primitive beings afraid of progress, they no better than wild animals.

The raven and the wolf spirits grew tired of the destruction and fighting, and sided with the wilds in their ideals, the domestics only capable of further destroying nature. In their anger they marked a tribe of wilds with a curse, they being removed from the sacred circle of life, unable to hunt or grow their own food, their souls never able to move on while their bodies are unable to return to the earth when they died. The curse upon them only broken once the domestics are gone once and for all. The cursed tribe now known to all by the name of the spirits whom cursed them. ‘Raven Wolf’
