This is a partial view of the underside of the roof of the community church on the north end of the village in Cunene Province, Angola.
Sy Aardwolf, who is the owner of the automotive shop and junkyard on the west end of the village, is also the pastor of that church. Years ago when the church's former pastor, Kosoko Leopard, was becoming to elderly to continue to hold the position of pastor, Sy Aardwolf felt that unmistakable divine calling to the position, and thus was ordained as pastor by Kosoko Leopard, and with 100% support from the congregation.

These truss plates and rafter tie-downs were made from sheet metal cut out of old automobiles from the junkyard.
None of the metal came from the cars shown here. The church was built long before these cars ever came to the junkyard...In fact, the church house was built, with the help of North American and Brazilian missionaries (mostly kinkajous and raccoons), back when Sy's dad was the owner of the junkyard and shop.

You may have noticed an application of tar between the wooden top plates and blockwork. That is to avoid direct contact between the wood and concrete so the wood does not rot out.
The black seen between the roof slat boards are the undersides of the slate shingles Tops of the slat boards were treated with a coating of tar slightly thinned with diesel fuel to protect them from the moisture of the shingles...As old as the church building is, any lingering odors of tar and diesel had long since dissipated away.

Roof hardware made from sheet metal cut from junked cars is quite common in the community.
In the construction of Kagiso Genet's liquor store, the top plate boards for the roof are anchored with long strips of junkyard metal woven between the sun baked bricks that the walls are made with...The sun baked bricks would not have taken to well to having anchors drilled into them. And with there being no building and zoning codes, if it will work, it can be utilized.
