After months of delay, I'm finally gearing up to make a Waccoon puppet, in the hopes that he'll be on YouTube someday.  No way am I going to show my own ugly mug online... no, sir!

I've always told people that Wac is short.  He's 3' 7" tall, which turns out to be a bit taller than I expected once I had him sketched out.  For reference, my own height is 5' 10".  The head measures 8" in diameter (also larger than I expected), but so far seems to be a good size for my hand.  I might very well use "actual size" as the final, but that depends how hard it is for me to keep my own head out of the camera view.

Also, beware the manliness of my frumpy work clothes and comfy slippers! In retrospect, I really should have worn something a bit more appropriate... LOL.

Anyway,  the foam prototype is for scaling and experimentation, so it's designed to be super cheap, rather than durable.  If my viability tests work out, the next prototype will be made of a wireframe to test the mouth/blinking movements, and then it will be finished with quality foam and fleece.

I've never tried making a 3D model of my characters before, so this is going to be quite fun and interesting to build. I'm already liking it, and even if the puppet thing doesn't work out, this will be a great reference for future drawings.

Man, cutting and sanding polystyrene foam sure does make a mess! I toyed with the idea of making the prototype in papier mâché, but the drying time would have driven me crazy.

Updates might be a bit slow.  The head is finished and actually looks really good, but my plan to use a lever for the mouth probably isn't going to work.  The movement looks a bit too fake.  I'll have to try out a more traditional "sock" muzzle, and it'll take a while to figure out what looks best.  I can't proceed with any more construction on the head until I feel comfortable that the mouth operates well (this is my first attempt at a real puppet, after all.  I'm learning as I go!)

At least I've settled on the size of the head.  8" is indeed a good size.

I understand the problem with the mouth. Some times what works great on drawing doesn't translate to a 3D object.

I have made a few papier machie puppets and always had a problem with the mouth because the medium is not flexible. Are you planning to cover it in fabric or any material that bends?

Edit: nevermind, I forgot you mentioned fleece.

Just be careful.

First you bring Wac into the world.  Then in the middle of the night he'll stagger into your room and whisper "Giiiivee meee myyyy wiiiiifeeee..." and then you've got to get back into the workshop...

As someone who's built several puppets, the mouth is the most difficult to get right. I would recommend looking at several different puppet designs to see what works best.  I particularly like Mesmo, a canine puppet from Fluff & Such productions.  His muzzle is slightly flexible to give Chris the ability to warp it's shape for those "ooo" and "uuu" sounds. Here's a link to one of his videos featuring Mesmo: http://www.fluffandsuch.com/flv/imwithyou_flv.html
