My favorite English letter combination is ough. I believe it can be pronounced a minimum of 8, EIGHT, different ways. Plus, how about pronunciations. For example, read can rhyme with reed and red AND rhyming with reed it's the present tense and rhyming with red it's the past tense. Go figure.

I don't think "Ä" sounds like "E" (this would sound like "I" in German). It's more like doing something like... When you think and make that "Well, errrrrr...." (without the R's, if you know what I mean).
Of course you are right if you read it in most of the words though. Like "Bäcker", "Männer", etc.
