On September 30, 1927, baseball legend Babe Ruth hits his sixtieth homerun of the season. This record was set during the time of "Murderer's Row," the lineup for the New York Yankees widely considered to be one of he best squads to ever take the field. Ruth's total was also the result of a bit of friendly competition between himself and fellow Yankee Lou Gehrig, who had been within only a couple of homeruns of Ruth's score the entire season.

Born George Herman Ruth Jr. on February 6, 1895, Babe Ruth began his professional baseball career with the Baltimore Orioles before going on to the major leagues with the Boston Red Sox. He was then sold to the New York Yankees in 1919, an act that is blamed by the superstitious (as the "Curse of the Bambino") for Boston never winning another pennant until 1946 nor a World Series until 2004. Ruth would play for the Yankees until 1934 when he spent a season with the Boston Braves before finally retiring from baseball. Following a two year battle with cancer, Babe Ruth passed away in Memorial Hospital on August 16, 1948. He was 53 years old.
