Another shading experiment... my commissioners will probably be indirectly happy that I'm getting back into the groove of things.

I also lost a bunch of sleep for this so you better like this pic. D=

Basically, I wanted to show that the act of love isn't empty. And to be disgustingly artsy.

Hurray for "disgustingly arstyness"!.
I love the way this one came out. :3

Thanks.

Certainly took long enough. *shakes fist* On the stream, I'm better at speed painting and not ... lingering overly on tiny petty details like grass.

Who is even going to look at the grass in this image?
ShadowsInc
13 years, 4 months ago
I didn't get to watch the stream *sadface*...

Tiny details are my forte. I love taking time to do all the littlest detail work.

(by the way, I look at all details in pictures, even grass :3 )

Yeah, when you feel like you otherwise suck, you're like "this whole tree might look awful but this leaf close to the viewer is going to look AMAZING!! ... maybe then they'll ignore the tree."

after i read this i looked at the grass, and it compliments the flow

That's a very cool and unique coloring style.
It has sort of a watercolor look to it, except with better and darker contrast.
ButtercupSaiyan
13 years, 4 months ago
Thanks, yeah, I was playing around in Photoshop. I don't like Illustrator OR Corel Painter and ArtRage 3 was being a bitch, so Photoshop it was! I was messing around with the brushes that came with CS 5, nothing special. Some people scan in watercolor drips and use those, but ... I would just paint with actual watercolor if I was going to do that.

Of course, first I would need actual painting brushes first because I can't ship to an apartment address with a tiny mailbox. My package will get stolen and art supplies aren't cheap! ;_;

My full set of art programs is on my regular PC, not my laptop... but the PC won't sense pressure. =L

That was a longass whiny tangent, I apologize. Right now, I'm just trying to make my laptop do what isn't possible for me right now due to bullshit factors like "not having a real home" or "driver problems."
humbird0
13 years, 4 months ago
I only have a laptop myself.
One of the reasons I still use CS2 is because it runs fast on everything.
I'm reluctant to upgrade to newer versions of Flash and Photoshop because they tend to run much slower on my machine.
ButtercupSaiyan
13 years, 4 months ago
This is true and they often don't have must-have features to offer to tempt one into the upgrade...

Like Flash CS 4 bones. SUCK SUCK SUCK SUCK That whole thing was a broken piece of shit, I wanted my money back. Optimize and Convert Line to Fill didn't even WORK right.

In CS 5, they still don't but I've learned to grit my teeth and get on with it.
humbird0
13 years, 4 months ago
One thing that might tempt me to upgrade Flash is the new "Molehill" 3D renderer they're working on.
We're talking Playstation 3 quality 3D graphics here!

That's both cute and sweet. :) I could get being this shipping when drawn like that!
ButtercupSaiyan
13 years, 4 months ago
Haha, I'll convert people yet.

Actually, I only rarely ship. My brony commissions aren't usually shipping either.

... Yet. I think that they just haven't massively sunk their fangs into me quite yet. But Equestria Daily keeps on picking up my stuff, it's just a matter of time before they all descend on me. @_@
Mirrdae
13 years, 4 months ago
Well, yes. You're awesome and getting better. :) You deserve the recognition, I just hope you don't get scared off by it!
Looking forward to seeing more from you, ship or no, though. ^^
ButtercupSaiyan
13 years, 4 months ago
The only reason I'm scared is because I've seen how mental AvalonX's, Lando's and Megasweet's fans are...

And the artists fullheartedly agree with me ... which then causes the fans to go more mental and increase the amount of bullshit.
Mirrdae
13 years, 4 months ago
Ick, yeah. I can see that. No personal experience with it but folks can be crazy.  Hopefully you won't get any on you, though! As I said, I want to see more of your stuff. :) If only I could catch your live-streaming.

I saw that one, and suggested a caption as well.   Wow.  I really need an avatar.  I don't stand out currently with the lack of one I currently have.

<EDIT>
In fact, I was the first one to comment on the image.
ButtercupSaiyan
13 years, 4 months ago
Yeah, I'm biased and when people watch me, I usually only click on those with avatars because those are the most likely to have a Gallery. It's hard to comment on someone's page personally when ... they have no journals or stories or anything at all submitted.

Sometimes, I'll shout on a page where someone friended me but otherwise I assume they hit the "watch" button meaning "I want to see your art mostly."
Saglinger
13 years, 4 months ago
Well, I hit the watch button more because I enjoy conversing with you.  I like making people laugh and being able to laugh in response.

ButtercupSaiyan
13 years, 4 months ago
Thank you, it's nice to find it got an intended effect. My only shame is that this wasn't a commission at all.

I sure would like it if my commissions turned out half as nicely. Like, they have technical merit and a little artistry, but not as much as I would like, for something someone is paying me for...
slightlyshade
13 years, 4 months ago
It's a matter of passion, isn't it? The secret then is to realign a commission with your own inspiration and not treat it differently (insofar as it's a secret at all; I suspect most of everyone just needs to 'grind' away at it with experience). Well, that's my own experience anyway, but I'm learning too, and it's definitely not my strongest suit. I can tell you though that if your commissions come out half as well in terms of emotional portrayal that you're succeeding greatly on being on your way to even grander accomplishments. :3
ButtercupSaiyan
13 years, 4 months ago
Well, the thing is, most of the time people don't commission backgrounds or full coloring because it's more expensive.

They also only want porn, they don't really want art. A few do, but those were usually already my friends or long-time clients that know my opinion on adult art aka I don't want to draw your fap material, I want to draw something you would put on a poster on your wall, even if it is graphic or really sexual.

If it's an animation, my standards go up even more. Then I REALLY want it to look good and if it doesn't, I'm super disappointed since I let down not only myself but them too.
slightlyshade
13 years, 4 months ago
Oh yeah, ideally you shouldn't need to cater to the demands of 'just give it sloppy, I just want to see the cocks/butts/tits'. Perhaps you can just draw a beautiful piece regardless of what people want.. haha, okay, maybe it's easier to just only take commissions for 'real' art? Because I feel the same way, I don't see adult material as anything different than non-adult art.. there's good art and there's bad art, that's all. So long as you're happy with the art you create it's not a draining process..

And oh, you do animations too? Well, you seem dedicated! Seems like a waste to pay you to draw some sketchy porno. ;3
ButtercupSaiyan
13 years, 4 months ago
Ah, yes, I wish I could afford to be picky. Commissions come steadily but ... not THAT fast. My list is only long right now because I am visible and present in the communities.

I have to continue to work hard to really fill up my list and make sure the turnover is good, that I'm completing my commissions in a sane amount of time or at least working on them while getting the concept art for other pieces started.

Some people just decide not to communicate regularly, so I have to move on to the next person until they get back to me... it's kind of tough freelancing. And to remember who paid in advance, who didn't, and remember to ask what they want: sketch, lineart, colored piece, etc and price accordingly...

By Furaffinity prices, I seem to be selling myself a little low right now. >_<

Anyway, enough talk about me, what about you?
slightlyshade
13 years, 4 months ago
I can imagine that's tough! And if your prices are low by FA standards, you must truly be selling yourself low! If I may make a suggestion; keep a notebook (or a virtual equivelant) to keep track of your commissions - contact details, payment, completion.. etc. I know a decent amount of good people who forget about commissions or get overwhelmed when they don't need to! Anyway, just a suggestion! :3

Me? If someone wants me to draw something for them, and it's a nice idea, I'll do it for free. Fun art is fun, and I like the idea of not owing anything, though honestly it's also a general dislike of doing things for money.. even uncreative things. It's just a personal 'lifestyle' I can get away with!

Hnnnnnnnnnngggggg! These two! My favourite pair-up from the show right after Apple-dash for sure x3 This is amazing and I am looking forward to more pictures like these in future if you plan on drawing any ^^
ButtercupSaiyan
13 years, 4 months ago
I hope to do more...

I just am at a premium for time and this pic alone, I stayed up all night and spent 8 hours on. Obviously, with commissions and game projects, I can very rarely afford that time. In this case, I think it was Saturday and I usually call that "pony day" though more accurately, I just mean "my day to do whatever the hell I want like fanart and commissions only if I feel like it."

So, uh, catch my stream tomorrow and see you there. =) Might be ponies, might not. I still need to color MegaSweet's Sweetie Belle pic too.
Vannie
13 years, 4 months ago
Ill definietely be sure to check it out! :3 And I understand that you are pressed by the commissions and all of the work, though the fact that it took you 8 hours, it really shows a lot of dedication and love for you own work ^^

And it shows! This picture is lovely, the colouring really does make it look like a traditional painting :3

i love this picture. m/m is more my forte, but i like this :3 i also love the way you had them furry like actual poines instead of all clay-like.
ButtercupSaiyan
13 years, 4 months ago
People either love or hate the fur I draw, lol. They are all like "they are not furry!" and I'm like "they are HORSES with MANES and TAILS."

I mean, I even draw part of the hoof sometimes and no one complains about that...
DaniiPachiiBlackfire
13 years, 4 months ago
i think i like the fact you make them furry with hooves.it makes them look cuddlier than regular
ButtercupSaiyan
13 years, 4 months ago
Heh, thanks. Someone said "Like a plushy."

Sadly, I'm not a plushophile but I do go nuts over fuzzy shirts and sweaters or soft fur coats on any longhaired critter, usually kitties. I pet them until they do that thing where they are JUST like an inch away from being petted.

They're all like women, damn teases.
DaniiPachiiBlackfire
13 years, 4 months ago
omg i love furri sweaters and shirts.(i own a back furry one i like to wear sometimes.i never say anything, but it makes me feel like a cat :3) and i like cats, but males are usually friendlier than the females,so id rather have a boy cat.lol and im a woman, and im not a tease at all! ^_^
ButtercupSaiyan
13 years, 4 months ago
I'm just kidding =D. I'm a woman myself, I was just being ironic.

Then again, I don't consider myself female by gender identity =__= I give up. Well, in short, I wasn't being serious, just tongue-in-cheek.

Oh, man, every time I buy a cashmere sweater, I wash it........
DaniiPachiiBlackfire
13 years, 4 months ago
XD me either really.come to think of it what defines a person as a woman? physcially or mentally?because really i think its whats inside that counts,and since its not literal,i think anyone can be a woman!(or a man)...im sorry, i got WAY off base...^^;

You're one of those rare artists that actually talks to people. :P
I'll bet it would be a fun.
ButtercupSaiyan
13 years, 4 months ago
Is it really that rare? ... :O

I may be slow to reply, but uh all my clients come from the community. So I try to make sure that I know my people at least enough to go "Oh, it's you" even if I mix everybody up in Skype constantly. "I'm not Edman! I'm Lost!" "Sorry ... "
Whippy
13 years, 4 months ago
Hmm..well...I've had that experience with a few artists, not everybody of course. I think it's like some artists tend to hide behind their art, while with others they just treat it like anything else and it doesn't matter. Probably something to do with introversion and shyness.

I like to be around the familiar folks as well when I stream. Creates a good atmosphere to be a lil crazay and have fun :)
I can't really do skype when I draw though, I go totally silent when I get into "work mode". So I stick to text lol. That way communication eventually happens.
ButtercupSaiyan
13 years, 4 months ago
Oh, I see, I see.

I get bored when I draw, so I like to talk to 2-3 other people because their chatter keeps me engaged and entertained and lets me "zone out" while doing the arts.

Do you stream, LooqDrake?
Whippy
13 years, 4 months ago
I do indeed. I know what you mean about getting bored while drawing. I usually gotta have some good enguaging music playing to easily get into a flow state. Gotta balance that skill with the challenge. ^^

Ahhhh, a moonlit clearing in the forest, where the trees stand like sentinels, guarding the loving pair as they snuggle in the soft grass.  This is a charming, romantic piece, and I love the "disgustingly artsy" coloring/shading you used - a mix of fantasy and natural textures - in all my favorite hues.

Yep, this one's a "wall-hanger", for sure.  And I think your grass and trees are terrific.
ButtercupSaiyan

Mmm, thanks. Unfortunately, DA doesn't allow for fanart as prints ... another good reason to get the hell away from the rabid fandoms and start my own projects in earnest.

No reason to worry about copyright violation on Inkbunny or DA when the only copyright is my own. =)
