There is a risk in a pikachu (electric mouse) becoming a raichu (electric rat). Be SURE that the pikachu has been trained in everything a pikachu can be trained in. Evolving a pokemon can reduce its ability to train, and early in the Pokemon series, Pikachu defeated a raichu by a move he knew, but the raichu had never learned. When his trainer secured him, he evolved the pikachu with a thunderstone right away, thus reducing its ability to learn.
When Pikachu was approached with a thunderstone, he swatted it away and then explained to Ash that he wished to fight & defeat the raichu as he was,not as a raichu. he wished to fight for the honor of all pikachus.
