Facing the Demon
Chucky is going from lack of confidence to truly doubting his abilities. It's usually a chain events that leads down this path, but it takes a chain of self accomplishments to pull oneself up and out of it. All of us have gone through this in life with one thing or another.

Ouch, that failure was a really hard blow for his self-steem....
Chucky
8 years, 2 months ago
It's starting to go a little beyond self-esteem. He's starting to down that thought path of, "What happens if I can't do this? Where do I go?"

We've all been here, have to say mind you've wonderfully shown what this state of mind is like in this comic. I feel so much for Chucky right now...

Seems like Chucky has been having it rough since Merry left.... Poor guy wish i could help him out.
Chucky
8 years, 2 months ago
Losing Merry was hurtful emotionally. But it also let him know that you most certainly can get dismissed from the program if you're not performing up to standards. He's afraid that he could be going down that path.

Oh boy have we.
It's at this time that little dragon plushy REALLY earns her pay.
I can't wait to see how this works out.

Why don't you start the process of making Chucky plushies? I'm sure there's a website or two that will give you something like 100 for $500 or whatever. And then you can resell them to Chucky fans like myself :P

That sounds awesome. I had a friend who wanted to make a close to life-sized one for me a while back. Then I thought, how would I explain that thing to my nieces and nephews. I'd have to hide it in the closet or something. A small one, maybe 18 inches tall or something would be good. At least big enough to hug and cuddle.

awwwwww poor Chucky i just want to give him a big hug and some warm coco to cheer him up
Chucky

Put some bourbon in that coco. ;) Actually that would probably be gross.

I was on a simple short flight from Denver International to Durango, CO. That's about 45 minutes in the twin-props they use. The Durango airport is a bit down in the valley though, and the wind picked up when we came in for a landing. The plane touched down, and the left wing just started rising up, and up, and up. The right wing damn near scraped the ground before the pilot finally wrestled the plane level again.

My point, wherever I was going with it, is that even a highly trained professional pilot that's made the same flight hundreds of times can have a really shitty day.
Chucky
8 years, 2 months ago
Ain't that shit the truth! It still doesn't help one's pride though. :)

Chucky

Definitely don't want to dwell on them.
sedkitty

I know I've had times like this.  You try to take life one day at a time, but sometimes several days gang up on you, pull you into an alley, and pull out their brass knuckles.

I may have extended that metaphor a little too far.
Klandagi

I like it, though.
Kalibran

And then you notice the one with the knuckle-dusters is your mother.
Chucky
8 years, 2 months ago
Nope, I think you got that metaphor just about right.

Yeah just practice ain't going to earn this fur his wings. Might want to approach this from a different course. He simply lacks an omnidirectional beacon to guide him over the threshold of passing this lesson. (aviation jokes are hard mkay)
Chucky

LOL! Love the aviation jokes, no matter how corny.

I... I'm actually going through that right now with my college experience. Went from a 4.0 after five terms to failing two previous terms(all classes with one term set up as pass/no pass to prevent that term from affecting my gpa) to this term being asked to drop a class already from one of my professors(which being only two classes... well let's just say my college has grinded to a complete halt and I will be unable to register for next term... let alone receive financial aide for a term.) Lack of self confidence, self esteem generally is crippling when a failure happens. It reinforces the image that I(and in this case Chucky) do not believe we can do what we set out to do... even if part of us knows we are capable of it. And the second to last panel... That's me right now for the most part. A few of the last panel but it becomes a depressed cycle that drags you deeper into despair.

So... yeah... This page touches me deeply =/. I wish for Chucky to pull through and show himself he can do it... as much as I wish I could too.
Chucky
8 years, 2 months ago
Your icon is adorable btw.

Sorry things are going so rotten for you in college right now. I guess I've depicted it quite well, but I do it from experience. It sounds like you know that you can get yourself through it. But waiting for the opportunity can be a real drag.
Kianala
8 years, 2 months ago
The knowing you can succeed is totally different from being able to push through the crippling cycle to actually do it.

And thanks ^_^... I like science... specifically chemistry and physics. My plan up to this point was get a bachelors in physics with a minor in chem and go on to a doctorate program for astrophysics. But right now... I'll take a bachelors in physics or (most likely)chemistry just to say I succeeded. If I can put myself back on track I'll look further than that.
Chucky
8 years, 2 months ago
Bachelor's is as far as I went. I consider all my flight training afterward the equivalent of post graduate. I wish you the best of luck with it. The stuff is so grinding, and it's hard when completion is still years away.

ColeSutra

I'm wondering where the flight simulators are.  Instead of letting Chucky beat himself up all weekend, Ian should let Chucky log a few hours.
Chucky
8 years, 2 months ago
Flight simulators are better as procedures trainers rather than basic practical flying skills. It's pretty hard to duplicate the randomness of the actual experience.

Not to pick out a hole in my own plot, but with their technology level they actually would have simulators that can be used for basic flying skills. Of course I'm doing a bit of a retelling of my own experiences. At this early point in my training, it was all about jumping in an airplane and getting paws-on experience.

Chucky

No more than anyone else I imagine. In fact from a lot of people I've known, I think Chucky's demons are rather minor. You're just getting a front row seat to his times of weakness.

I can imagine. Especially since you made it that far and you'd be going over in your mind, "What if this doesn't work out, then what?"

It sure does. Your mind immediately goes to 'worst case scenarios'. At least I knew how to work in a garage.

Funny i read this right before going into my guitar lesson.  I know the feeling.
Chucky
8 years, 2 months ago
Guitar lessons, I can CERTAINLY see this applying to learning any musical instrument. I tried learning the guitar for about a year and decided I should get back to drawing.
billyote
8 years, 2 months ago
I've been playing guitar self taught off and on for 20 years or so, but I'm starting to take writing and recording more seriously, and realized I needed to know more about what I was doing.  My first lesson showed me that I really didn't know that much, but this second lesson really started connecting the dots, so went really well.   Still a little nervous considering I've been playing blues based rock and pop all my life, and I thought it would be interesting and more challenging to learn jazz.   Hope I didn't bite off more than I can chew!  :P
Chucky
8 years, 2 months ago
I've felt that with flying many times. I have a friend who took a very similar path with guitar playing as you. Very self taught with the exception of a few lessons. He eventually got into recording.
billyote
8 years, 2 months ago
It's awesome that you're flying.  I'm a huge AV-geek myself.  My PC is pretty much only used for flight simming.  I'd love to get a liscence, but would take money away from my music gear, so flight simming keeps me happy there.  I miss being around jets though.  I was an armament systems specialist (loaded the bombs) on F-16s and F-15s for 10 years in the Air Force.
Chucky
8 years, 2 months ago
Very cool man. Yeah, aviation is just a fun thing to be around. So with a prior life in aviation and current life in music, has it done a number on your hearing? Mine is total shit.
billyote
8 years, 2 months ago
It's funny how I think I've gotten lucky somehow.  I once forgot my hearing protection when de-arming an F-16 with engine running.  It was insane running around the jet with hands over my ears with quick bursts of placing safety pins in.  However when I had my outgoing physical, even the people doing the exam were astonished that my tests showed little to no degradation.  Although that could totally come back to haunt me later in life.  I'm waiting for various ailments to start snowballing.  Bad knees, hearing loss, years of working around harsh chemicals...I'm doomed.  :P
Chucky
8 years, 2 months ago
I'd say 40 is when it happens, but my hearing has been a problem for me waaaay before that. Lots of heavy metal and too much airplane noise.

fear of failure
Chucky
8 years, 2 months ago
Very much so.
PrysmTKitsune
8 years, 2 months ago
i've never doubted myself to this level honestly, because i know my strengths and my weaknesses quite well i'm fully aware of what i can do, what i could do if i tried, and whats beyond my ability...though honestly i wish i didnt, at times its more a handcap then a benfit because it holds you back from takeing risks that could lead to self improvement...i tend to avoid the 'could dos' because of the chance of failure.
i didnt used to when i was a teenager i took tons of risks, got out there did things but...over time ive grown leary of it, fear of failure has...stiffeld me a bit...but this day and age is not kind to risk takeing either so...perhaps its for the best.
and before anyone says anything snide 'fearing failure' and 'doubting oneself' are not the same thing im fully confident in my abilities but some things are up to lady luck.
Chucky
8 years, 2 months ago
That sounds about right actually, I don't think you're wrong by fearing certain things. As we become adults, we understand our strengths and weaknesses better, but I think we also have more to lose. There are certainly ventures I wouldn't pursue now that I would have as a teen, and vice versa.

Chucky's problem is that for the first time in his young life, he's being confronted by something that he's unsure can be accomplished. He feels his career and identity are riding on this. There is a true mental/physical nature to flying wherein some people really CAN'T do it, no matter how much they want to. Chucky knows this and fears he might be coming to that edge.
PrysmTKitsune
8 years, 2 months ago
with modern equipment just about anyone can learn to fly, not necessarily 'jets' but at the very least ultralights we have a local flight school that teaches how to fly basic prop driven planes as well as para-gliders...a rather...interesting piece of tech that one...that said knowing 'how' to fly and being 'good' at it are not the same thing, chucky clearly knows 'how' to fly, and is quite good at it...hes working with conditions that even seasoned vets would have issues with, you don't learn how to deal with it all overnight....is it wrong that i think im trying more to convince the charicter then the real you of that....*Facepaw* your story is sucking me in dude....im argueing stupid things i shouldnt cause i want him to sucseed *laughs*

That's rough. Another failed flight and the best friend he has taking off without warning.  This is the kind of scenario that really fucks someone up.  You are left alone with your doubt and it just keeps spinning around in your brain.  I have been there plenty of times.  Without an outlet or a voice of reason poor Chucky may be ready to put a bullet in his head by Monday.
In traditional story telling this is the point some new element would enter his life to help guide him.
Chucky
8 years, 2 months ago
You can see his disappointment when he finds that Adam is leaving. He's got other friends, but he's already decided to crawl into the alone box. It's college, there are always other elements.

BigD
8 years, 2 months ago
My sympathies for the young man.  I will say that, as much as this has him down, he is fortunate in that it's still within his ability to succeed.

The hardest failure to accept and get over is one that's caused by something completely outside of your control.  You can have all the passion, all the drive, and even be perfect for what you're aiming for...and be denied because of some bullshit rule that makes all of it cease to matter.

Stay strong, Chuckie.
Chucky
8 years, 2 months ago
He just needs to be convinced of that. Right now he feels that this could be outside of his control.
