I idled the engine in my 1976 Dodge camper for about a minute with the fuel line disconnected on a dry carburetor by putting rum in a spray bottle and continually spraying it into the carburetor while the engine ran...Just wanted to see if it would work.

If you find whiskey gross, try black rum.

As a drinker of fine whiskey, I can say, you're either drinking it wrong or buying cheap and nasty. I'm not sure what whiskey is available where you are though...

Whats the right way to drink it then

Well to start with the burn is part and parcel, you're never going to have that go away without compromising the taste. Your best bet in your case might be to water it down to start with (don't use a super expensive bottle for this). Not only will that weaken the burn, but it'll also make it last longer. I'm not saying you should always water it down, but it's there as an option. Drinking it when poured over ice has a similar effect, but the watering down is gradual, and the whiskey would also be colder, so it's be less intense. Also, I'm not sure how much you're drinking with each sip, but smaller sips will help if you prefer not to water it down. It's still just as strong, but you'd get used to it. I'm not exactly a connoisseur, so I'm not going to go into those weird things 'tasters' do, but allowing it to linger on your tongue before swallowing helps too.
I prefer to drink it neat, but I did a lot of this stuff before I got used to it. By the way, there are a huge number of ways to drink alcohol, but there's only one way to drink it wrong, and that is gulping it down. That is for people who are less interested in the drink and more interested in getting drunk. Waste of a good drink.
