Call Your Rep, Save a Life

I'm not usually this naked about this sort of thing, but the US Congress greased the wheels to get rid of the Affordable Care Act. Among the things they voted to rip out was the Medicaid expansion.

This affects me personally.
Chaytel
Chaytel
has an onset disease that's kept at bay by the fact that we can currently keep him on his medicine. If they take that away, there will be absolutely no way we can afford to do it. I'm not going to mince words: This will make his life shorter.

If you live in the US and have a heart, please call your local representative at 866-426-2631 and tell them to keep the parts of the ACA that help people- like the Medicaid expansion. All you have to do is enter your zipcode and it'll transfer you straight to your local rep. Please do this. Don't make excuses, don't say you'll do it, do it. If you never do anything for me, please do this.

EDIT: If the number's not working for you, you can get your rep's number here: http://www.whoismyrepresentative.com/

damn. and here i was looking foward to actually affording real insurance again.
havnt been able to affort it scince these shinanaigans began, along wit millions of other hard working americans.
its ok tho, ive never ACTUALLY needed it so far, so currently im just paying a "wellness tax" which i presume is what you would be asking me to keep paying to fund everyone else who does NOT work, due to various reason, and falls into the covered status of this plan.
600$ a year that is up to now, deducted from my tax refund.
thats a lotta comisions.
sure, lets go at it another year, what the hell.

fair enough, the system DOES need to cover people like you. my little sister had cancer, died at 16, so yes if she had been alive in the last 10 years id probbly be begging for a system to keep her suported as well, , obviously we cant afford brain surgerys  on minimum wage.
fortunatly medicade at that time DID fully cover the procedures she needed. i hope we do get a system in place that actually does work the way its advertised. i aint had no insurence in 7 yrs, its just too expensive
while i agreeits almost never good to wholesale discard a plan in place, that causes undue chaos,
it sure needs worked on tho.
both of us should be able to get somthing outta this screwy system.
at least i can work, so sure i expect to put a bit more into the system than somone whos disabled.
but damn, im doing that, and STILL got no insurence myself. have to pick between food, bills, insurance, ect, ya know?
this system just aint right.
if there were actually a plan that cost no more than this amount im being taxed for, id be on that, but havent seen anything under around doubble what the wellness tax is, so currently i just pay that.
THATS the part that needs fixed.
i say the government outgh to be selling us insurince for that same price there taxing us, if they actually expect its fesiable.
if not, than they outgh to stop dictating terms to what insurance company can offor, and driving there costs up.

I think everyone totally agrees that the status quo is not where we need to be. It should be affordable for everyone, if not just an inalienable right. We can do that, but it would come in the form of changes, not sweeping cuts.
Exelbirth

What were those inalienable rights again?  Life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, right?  Wish that those were actually guaranteed rights, rather than privileges.

Norithics
7 years, 3 months ago
That's the part they're not telling you about: Your rates won't go down even if they kick all the rest of us off. Because why would they? They're private insurance companies, they never lower rates. All that will happen is they'll stop having to cover costly people, then they'll lower their rates maybe 5% while promising more in the future; meanwhile they'll just keep jacking it up, because that's what they do. They're companies, they don't care if you can afford it, they just care about making more money.
wizardofwtf

your right about it being a for profit bisness. which is exactly why obama outgh to have never interfered in it in the 1st place, he had no right to prevent a bisness from selling me a product i wanted. insted, he thinks he knows whats best. the insurance company says fine, but if we do it that way we will have to charge more money to maintain out stastical profit. obama says thats fine too, i will tax every one additionally, so that they feel they not so bad about these higher prices, as if they dont take them, they will lose some money and get NOTHING.
it makes me wonder how much stock obama owns in the insurance bisness, it seems designed to help them, not us.
Norithics
7 years, 3 months ago
You're actually right. The health insurance lobby had their fingers in both parties, making sure that we never got the kind of Medicaid expansion we needed unless they got this sweet deal they have now where they rake in all kinds of cash from people under penalty of tax fines. It was completely their design.
Chaytel
7 years, 3 months ago
He actually does have the right, and should have been using it harder. Every insurance company that refused to participate in this whole affair should have received a suspension of business order and been liquidated on the spot, permanently. In fact, termination of every insurance provider that is colluding with one another to hike rates should be a thing, but it's not, due to the same Republican obstructionism and interference that led to your rates going up so outrageously.

For profit business is fine and dandy, until it interferes with the overall fiscal well-being of the nation.

A lot of news iv read even shows that if the ACA is stripped away the GOP doesn't even have a plan for replacing the ACA yet witch will leave over 20-30 million Americans suddenly without health insurance. And the GOP even said that it could be a month or two before a plan gets put into action.

Other news says that the GOP simply wants to put a show on about gutting Obama's ACA or Obamacare just because hes a black man. Then after gutting ACA they want to put more less the same things they gutted back into there plan witch will likely be called Trumpcare.  And btw Trump said he even knew of the election being hacked. That right there should of made our government do a vote recount with stronger protections from foreign hacking.

I really hate our government and all the GOP stands for......i could go on and on but ill end hear.  But needless to say iv done all i could to stop this from happening.

I'm confused, what is the affordable care act,? I agree everyone should have access to health insurance but what is this, is this some kind of consequence caused by Obamacare being forced on people who didn't want insurance? Or is this a nasty side effect of trying to get rid of it? I'm sorry if I come off as ignorant so call me a moron if you will but I'm genuinely wondering wtf is going on here.
YukiAkuma
7 years, 3 months ago
"Obamacare" is the dumb nickname Republicans use for the Affordable Care Act to make you hate it while also pretending that getting rid of it wouldn't hurt you.

The ACA is the law that prevents health insurance companies from refusing to insure people with pre-existing conditions, among other things like making it mandatory to have health insurance and far easier to sign up for said health insurance.

Repealing "Obamacare" would result in about two million Americans suddenly unable to have insurance and wouldn't do anything to lower premiums for anyone else. The only people it benefits are insurance industry higher ups and the politicians they bribe to pass laws like this.
randolfsparks
7 years, 3 months ago
Yeah, this sucks but I'd hope we could get a better way to ensure people without having to force people to pay for health insurance if they don't want to. Though this is coming from someone who's deathly scared of paying out the ass for insurance. This especially scares me now that minimum wage was raised so prices for everything have gone up.
YukiAkuma

Its funny hearing about this all the time. Not funny you are suffering for it... but funny how many people point the finger at our leaders.

My Step dad helped build the online Infrastructure of the ACA web site. He and his team have put a lot of effort into it. After hearing about everything thats going on (or what little I pay attention to or over hear) It makes me wonder if he will be out of a job if it is removed. Not really concerned though... he is a smart guy and will bounce back for sure. His knowledge is valuable and his skill are nearly unmatched. He and my mother will be fine.

Its sad when your countries leaders are so corrupt they are willing to hurt and kill off their fellow man just because someone of a different view point or skin color is doing something they want to take credit for. The GOP wants to remove it... then remake it... and call it something else? And even if that is not the case... removing it will put untold amounts of people in a position where they will lose family and friends. Not that they might lose them... they will lose them.

That's sad and pathetic. Yet... even saying that will not help. Only action will help.

Gain knowledge and be proactive. That is the quickest way to victory. For now though... I wish you the best. I myself am under the benefit of the ACA. I never had personal insurance before it and I did little to nothing with it while I had it. I did not know its value... and still am not sure I do. It is one of my flaws. I never understand how much I am being helped until I get hurt.

Anyone who wants to use it... you need to file your taxes each year or the lash back will be apparent in the price of your benefits package as well. I didn't file my taxes and the price sky rocketed. But I am not blaming Obama. I am not upset with the ACA. I only blame myself for not learning about this stuff when I was in school. I blame myself for dropping out. I blame myself for ignoring family who tried to point me to what was best. If I end up without... it is because I allowed myself to remain ignorant of the facts... and I have to suffer for it.

Now our country is suffering because those who wanted to remain ignorant have spoken...the "country" I speak of are majority voters that won the recent election... and they are many. Our "country" voted for this. And by not learning what was needed to remove those who would hurt us from power or simply not acting on our ability to remove them... our country has allowed itself to be in this position. I am one of the ignorant people who just doesn't know how to affect change out side a presidential vote. And trust me... I leterally did not vote for this. (VA Blue state here) Even so I take blame for what I have not learned and what I have not done. I apologize to everyone hurt by my ignorance, and inaction in past years.

I really wish there was something I could do to help with this.  Sadly, as a Canadian, I have absolutely no ability to influence American internal policy.  The utter callousness and lack of consideration a lot of Americans seem to have toward anyone with any kind of disadvantage (whether it's health related, financial, etc.) never fails to leave me gaping in horror and disbelief. >>;

I really feel like the insurance industry as a whole needs to be torn down and rebuilt from the ground up.  Even here in Canada they can be pretty scummy.  There's a lot of stuff that isn't covered by our healthcare system, and the insurance companies trot out every excuse they can think of to deny people the coverage they friggin' PAID for.  The whole system is hopelessly corrupt and in dire need of an overhaul. >>;

If there's any way I can help, please don't hesitate to let me know.

The one thing you can take solace in right now is that the Republicans are split on how to go about repealing the ACA.  There's the nutjob faction that wants to repeal and let people die before they even consider replacement plans, facing off against the sensible faction that at least wants a replacement before repealing (even if the replacement may be worse, or at best exactly the same).

Honestly, I'm more worried about two different groups of people more than the Republicans: Democrats, and people who think the ACA and Obamacare are two separate things.

The Democrats I'm worried about because they don't fight.  They make a show, but accomplish nothing.  They couldn't even get a public option for healthcare passed when they had a veto-proof majority.  Plus, I doubt any of us here are able to claim to be their prime constituency, due to a lack of 0's we're able to put in a donation.  It takes a lot of phone calls (and even more emails, probably hundreds of times more) to overcome those donation amounts from people who don't share our common interests.

As for the second group, it's sad to know that group even exists.  My lifemate's family knows someone who was gleeful that Obamacare is going to be repealed, and boasting how they'll be fine because they got insurance through the ACA.  He wasn't so gleeful when it was explained that Obamacare is just another name for the ACA.  I worry about this group, because they're not going to be calling their representatives until they're made aware that they will personally suffer from its repeal.
Delquea
7 years, 3 months ago
Thats America in a nutshell. Every group is so divided simply due to ignorance or hatred. And to someone like me, I just have to wonder how this society went on this long.

Whats more amazing to me is the fact the core concept of ACA was proposed BY a Republican. But of course the majority of the Republican Party forgot about that.
Exelbirth

Due to the detrimental bipartisan situation we find our politics in, which we were warned about very early on, one political party has the majority in the House & Senate so while I applaud people doing something I don't see how it's going to realistically change anything. Best of luck to everyone who's going to be negatively affected by this upcoming change, but hopefully something better will actually emerge from all this.

Keep your hopes up dear... A majority of Americans are upset.. So maybe something good will happen to keep the system together or even improved. Also I'm a friend of a fellow draggy ya may know. He tells me you're a really good person. I wish nothing but good news and high spirits for you. ^ω~

I don't know how much this helps, but I do hope your friend Chaytel is still doing all right.
