Break-in.

I just discovered a break-in & theft in my home, and am in shock.
I went downstairs to retrieve some laundry, as I want good clothes for a doctor's appointment. I then discovered about half the magazines on a nearby shelf missing ! A bottle was also found on the floor, which I (me) would never have left there. Magazines on another shelf were also disarranged and some probably stolen ! I know the issue #s. They could have easily come upstairs and .sorry I do not want to think about it !

The back door of the garage was disturbed, as well. To get in, they had to dislodge a stack of ladders against the back door of the garage, and that  caused quite a crash. What bothers me is that I did not hear the crash of those ladders. I am quite hard of hearing...

I will call the police tomorrow, and plan to put the house up for sale and move. This may sound drastic, BUT I am a senior citizen and live alone, and am very hard of hearing ,using a hearing aide when awoke, and it was night when they broke in.

It's time for me to move to an apartment and maybe later, to assisted living. The only trouble is - how to do it. I have never moved on my own, or sold a house and both times it was my folks, when i was younger, who did all the work. Now they are passed on. I need advice, help, detailed written instructions. I do not want to make major mistakes and mess up.
This involves contacting an agency (several offers to choose from),repairs if needed, selling the house, finding a new address, a possible yard sale, moving, address and phone number changes, Finding rental ,etc. getting mail to my old address forwarded by the post office, etc.,possibly an unlisted number... and not necessarily in that order. Proximity to the main bus route is no longer a factor, as I recently retired...

The neighborhood is not as safe as it used to be, a mugging having taken place a block away from my home, and a murder-suicide about 3 blocks away. I've toyed with this drastic idea on & off for a good time, but now ...

A major theft at my family's upstate home (door bashed open, a window smashed, 11 fires set in attempts of illumination and possibly to burn the house down, magazines stolen, etc.,) was a factor in selling the place, as my mother never felt right about the property ever since (sold in late 2003). As I said, I no longer feel right about THIS suburban home now.

This is not guaranteed to work for everyone, but the place I live at now is 10 acres in Arkansas I paid $1,000 per acre for with $200 down, going through a local realtor who arranges owner financing.
I purchased a raggedy old RV trailer for $200 from someone who was going default on his place. I had a friend of mine tow the trailer to my place after I bought it.
Doing things this way is not exactly the Palisades Palace, but it is a peaceful place to live without the stress.

While all these things may or may not fall into place for someone else, perhaps it would inspire some ideas to try to put together a game plan from.

I look for the opposite. I plan to move into an apartment with neighbors. Maybe assisted living. I am getting on in years, have ailments and live alone. I do NOT wish to die alone, and un-noticed. The theft was one new factor in my decision.

I will contact a real estate agency, choosing from the flyers I have received unsolicited. (The same thing when my folks stopped going upstate to the summer home often. Mother was always finding excuses NOT to go up: too hot, too cold, it might rain, mother didn't feel good. It got so that we were getting flyers and ads offering to buy the unused acreage. After my father's passing, mother talked me into selling & we sold the place.)

I suspect certain neighbors of having gotten into my house and stealing comics. I will get in a glazier, but in preparation to sell the house.

It's also not the Billionaire's Tower, a place with a view of Central Park. More money asked for the down payment than I have ! I also am now retired. I think a 6' hi-res panel photo of a view of Central Park mounted on the wall would create the same atmosphere and do quite nicely.

I have suspicion of neighbors, who live slovenly.
