I don't like Zootopia

Shocking! Blasphemy!

In all seriousness, it isn't the world, the animals, or the fact it's being sold because "look, anthropomorphic animals!"

It's Nick and Judy.

I don't like them due to their personalities.

This was a problem, but then it got worse when I learned of the original script and story. See, Nick and the predators had to wear "behavior correcting shock collars". This curbed instances where Nick and others would do something like attacking herbivores. The predators lived as second class citizens and were always harassed by the law. Nick found a way around this by becoming a con man. He couldn't attack them, so he found roundabout ways of making their lives living hell by being snarky with passive aggressive statements and performing con jobs to "stick it to the man". Without the shock collar and that whole underlying plot, he's just an egotistical asshole who's being an asshole for the sake of being an asshole.

Judy is even worse. See, Judy is a rabbit. She's not a buffalo or rhino or any other large herbivore who's intended to be able to wrestle a predator and incapacitate them, but she abuses the legal system to force them to hire her. So she now is in a job where she doesn't belong and is completely unfit for any actual duty. In the original plot, it didn't matter who was a cop because shock collars and this went to showcase how Nick, being Judy's natural predator, was unable to put a fist through her face like she deserved and instead had to fall back on his passive aggressive snark with her using increasingly underhanded legal BS to try and make Nick do what she wanted since she couldn't physically strong arm him into doing what she needed done. Come the script change, she's still the same arrogant ,law abusing twat that Nick can't punch in the face (because reasons), and instead of being shown or coming to terms with how she's actually useless in the job she's in, she ACCIDENTALLY saves the daughter of the mafia, and when shit gets bad, SHE USES THE MAFIA TO FURTHER HER CAREER.

How am I supposed to like these characters?

The answer is that I have no obligation to like them.

I don't like them. I don't like zootopia.

Just because i'm a furry doesn't mean I have to like every furry related piece of media that has been released.

This is quite an impressive review. I have yet to see it, but I had heard about the plot that was supposed to be followed before. So what you're saying is they changed the plot without changing the characters to match.

Bingo. Nick is just a con man who... is avoiding taxes? And he's an asshole because... "foxes. amiright?" ?

Judy is an empowered bunny who don't need no man, she's got the mafia.

This plot change was also VERY late in development, which explains why they took 3-4 trailers before they even mentioned an idea of what the plot was about, which was hamfisted at best (going from the fact that the city had unsavory aspects and that the law was out of hand, but the characters learn to like eachother, to the characters being assholes who don't like eachother to characters being assholes who do like eachother).

I haven't seen the movie because it seemed to have deviated from their original aim which was a sort of prejudice thing between herbivores and carnivores and the two main characters didn't get along at first but would grow to get by their prejudices and become friends.  Something that I think would've been a real neat concept if done right imo.

After seeing the trailer I was a bit turned off;  didn't care much for it like everyone else.

I don't have much judgement since I haven't seen it, so I can't say much on it.

Interesting though.

As I stated in an above reply, the change in script was quite late. They had RENDERS done of Nick with the shock collar and even had a full color storyboard of one of his herbivore neighbors trying to assassinate him with a silenced handgun.

But yes, they took around 3-4 trailers before they mentioned any sort of story, and that was due to how the script got twisted by disney to be "nicer".

Heaven forbid you show the main characters with flaws and have the story be about them just overcoming that. No, gotta have it be a third party of some sort.

It's pretty much a generic mainstream romantic comedy, with pixar kind of humor based on pop-culture references. It is exactly what one would expect from a generic romantic comedy, except with cartoony graphic and anthropomorphic animals.
It does sufficiently well what it is going for (being a romantic comedy with modern pop-cultural humor), and with a little bit of an edge for the drama, but not too much to turn the general population off.

I also noticed the way it's been advertised had differed greatly based on the continent/country, making it seem like a completely different movie at the different markets, where the truth is somewhere in the middle.

It has a discriminated-against, weak female who is striving to break the glass ceiling, and to top it she's a country girl in the big city.
It has an underdog fox who is a thief and a scam artist, as her love interest. An underdog and a bad boy, but one which the girl totally has under her heel, a "perfect" romantic comedy blueprint. He's there so she can be contrasted against him to make her look even more perfect, pure, etc, the "essence of female superiority"...
They bicker like in a romantic comedy. She walks all over his head and has him under her heel like in a romantic comedy.
etc. Something the typical person and the social-justice types would enjoy, but not much in terms of subverting the status quo.
Characters in romantic comedies often don't have any flaws, unless the "flaws" are cute and appealing, or unless it's a male who only has flaws for the sake of giving the female a chance to "fix" him.

Such is the casual sexism towards all males in the human society.

Mmhmm, as i said, both versions of the script flat out have judy as an unlikable, "power mad" twat. The difference being that the original plot started with her in the "high power", but as time went on, she found that nick did nothing but live in hell all day every day for crimes he didn't commit and it was up to her to try and push back against the system since Nick had zero authority.

I think the only thing I hate more than nick and judy's "new" appearances is the mindless praise this movie is getting from the fur community because "it's a furry movie guys! it's NEVER happened before!" indicating just how young most of these imbeciles are.

Forgive me if I have a distaste for stupid young people.

There's been plenty of furry movies before. Aren't like more than half of these 3d comedies about furries? Granted, this one was slightly more serious than the usual type, but they are all about furries.
Dreamworks alone made like 20 movies about furries, out of which at least 10 are about anthros, over the last 20 years.
They span over a various range of more anthro looking furries and more feral looking ones. Some are purely about furries, others have a mix of furries and humans. It's hardy anything new to replace all humans in a movie with animals.
It's just normal hype as always, studios/corporations spend millions of dollars on creating hype for every new movie and people eat it up as always. Nowadays half of a movie's whole budget goes to advertising propaganda specialists, so it's hardly unexpected.
People get hyped like that for new furry games as well. (They get hyped like that for all new movies, games, etc. not just furry ones)

Nowadays every new high-budget movie is the best, most amazing, only one of a kind, most innovative movie ever, with exception of those really, really bad ones, at least in the social consciousness.
Same goes for games, high budget games advertisements do stuff like: "We developed a completely new and innovative system which is revolutionize gaming! we call it, player choices! In our game you can now chose out of a few dialogue options!"
Movies are like "We developed a completely new, innovative system, we call it 3d graphic!"
Everything is new and innovative and the the best thing ever since sliced bread, especially when it's only a new buzzword for something that was already there since 20 years ago. ;p

Obviously you shouldn't expect much mindless praise of anything from me, I have a tendency to go against the flow, and hype tends to, if anything, turn me off. I'm also rather critical of big budget art.

That said, I think it's not like this movie is particularly better or worse than most of these 3d comedies about animals, or romantic comedies in general. It's just that it's not a very high standard to live up to to begin with. In fact, it may even be slightly better than the average 3d comedy, because it's a little bit more serious, but that's not saying much. Most of the criticism I applied to this movie, I could apply to most other romantic comedies, and I guess it's a kind of stuff easily digestible for the casuals >.>

Guh, don't remind me. Every advertised movie ever released is "breaking box office records".

What? Do they throw out the records every week and start wit ha clean slate? Because you keep saying Shit Movie A is better than Shit Movie B, but then shit movie C, which is terrible, is better than shit movie b.

And yes, it's extremely common for animals to replace people in movies. "Oh, but this one pointed out that they were anthropomorphic in the first teaser! That means these guys are furries!" Surprise, EVERY FUCKING ONE OF THESE PEOPLE is a "furry". Doesn't matter if they have hardcore smut stashes or just like the pretty colors, that's what they are for focusing on it this way.

Again, i detest the young and stupid.
