Contributions towards the marathon are now closed! Gasp!
And a chance for free art, too! On August 1st (and likely into August 2nd), I'll be doing a gaming marathon with the hope of generating donation funds for Inkbunny! All the plans are made, and all schedules are set - now it just needs you guys~
TL/DR version - Donate to Inkbunny - reply to this journal - watch me play games for way too long.
What's this about? Inspired by Speed Demos Archive's "Summer Games Done Quick", I wanted to do something to help support the site. In a nutshell, donations will go to Inkbunny, and depending on the amount, I'll play more and more games in a single segment, non-stop run. I'm not a speedrunner in any sense of the word (except for Super Metroid any%), so this will mostly be an endurance gaming run!
Wait, non-stop?! Well, there'll be occasional breaks for biological necessities - meals, bathroom, and life-giving coffee. These shouldn't take much more than 10-15 minutes, and will be spaced in between gaming blocks.
Gaming blocks? Yes, gaming blocks! Five of them specifically. When certain goals are met, blocks will be added to the total run-time of the marathon. In specifically, the blocks are:
DOOM BLOCK -Doom 2 (Ultraviolence difficulty)
MEGAMAN BLOCK -Megaman 1 -Megaman 2 -Megaman 3
METROIDVANIA BLOCK -Super Metroid -Axiom Verge -Cave Story
NES ACTION-ADVENTURE BLOCK -The Legend of Zelda -Crystalis
SQUARESOFT BLOCK -Chrono Trigger (characters will be renamed as Inkbunny mods/admin~)
So, what about these goals? I'm glad you asked! Golly, you're like a mind reader or something... Each block will have two goals - one based on the total number of people donating to the event, and the other based on how much money is "bid" towards it. Once one of these two goals are met, that game block is added to the marathon.
If BOTH goals are met, an additional bonus will be added to that block:
+=====|Block Bonuses|=====+
Doom Block -- Fisting Simulator!! (Shareware Doom played with fists only) Megaman Block -- Full set of NES Megaman games (1-6) Metroidvania Block -- SM / AM played to 100% completion, CS played played through Hell. NES AA Block -- Games played in Japanese, I read all on-screen text out loud. Squaresoft Block -- All side-quests finished, Lavos killed via the Black Omen.
+======================+
In addition to these goals, if 50 or more people donate, I will add an additional mystery game to the list. There is also a $250 side goal wherein I will do the entire run on video camera (with the recording placed conveniently in the upper corner of the stream).
Each monetary goal is independent of one another. For example, if one person donates $50, they can elect where those $50 go towards. If they choose to put the total towards the NES Action Adventure block, that goal will be met and it'll be added into the stream (along with the Doom block, since the 1 - 9 donors is also met). Later, if 30 or more people end up donating, both goals for the NES AA Block will be met, and I'll read the Japanese with my silly American accent. You can also contribute to "Runner's choice", in which case I'll just pick whichever one causes me the least pain looks fun.
Ideally, your post should go like this You donated $20 to Inkbunny, and want to contribute to the Metroidvania goal - reply to the "Metroidvania donations go here" message and say "Donating $20 to Metroidvania".
Oh boy, I'm ready to donate! Fantastic! Here's a few easy steps to follow to make sure this all runs smoothly (smooth is good~)
1) Donate to Inkbunny. Be sure to display your snazzy new donor badge - it'll let you sit at the cool kid's table at lunch! 2) Reply to this journal stating how much money you donated. I'll have sections for each game - please make it as a reply to whichever game block you'd like to contribute to. If you'd like to split your amount between multiple blocks, reply to only one thread and say how you'd like it split. If you are not comfortable saying how much you donated, you can certainly tell me this via PM~ 3) Get yourself some iced tea and snazzy shades - you so cool~
(If you'd still like to plug the event, that's cool~ But the raffle is all finished.) But I'm chronically broke - what can I do?! It's all good - I've also got some bonuses for plugging the event! Make a reply to "Journal plugs go here" with a link to your announcement, and I'll add you into a raffle. Depending on how many entries there are, I use random.org to pick 2 - 4 winners to receive a colored sketch based on the games in the marathon. Basically, your character cosplaying / themed on whichever character you'd like from the above list. So if you want your loli with Trace's elaborate sideburns, go right ahead~
How long will this take / When will you run these? The start time and finish time for each game will depend heavily on how many games will actually be played. My time zone is based in Japan, but I'll aim to make it convenient for most viewers. That being said, in the unlikely event that all goals are met, this should take me roughly 30-35 hours to complete (so you should be able to catch at least part of it).
I will close off donations a week before the August 1st event date
This will allow me to practice the games, judge their average clear times, and set a rough schedule for the event. I'll post an event plan so that people can have an idea when their games of choice might be run.
Those were lots of words... and I didn't take notes... Yeah, me neither... Here's the synopsis:
Current Games List: Doom 2 Fisting Simulator (Doom ep. 1 fists only) Chrono Trigger (any%) Super Metroid (any%) Axiom Verge (any%) Cave Story The Legend of Zelda Crystalis
Thank you! I wanted to try and maintain a badge level of some sort, but making student loan payments ended up being a more required use of my commission money...
This seemed to be a good alternative!

I wish I could, but I am tight on money. And I won't be able to do anything huge for the rest of the year until I get situated in a new place. Gonna be moving out soon. But all I can do is wish you the best of luck, and try to spread the word about your donation drive.

Unfortunately, yeah... For video capturing purposes, only Doom, Axiom Verge, and Cave Story will run natively. However, due to the power of my computer, I'm able to run emulators that perform close to, if not exactly to machine perfect~.
Oh, and I'll be using an SNES controller run through USB. If there's a particular call for authenticity, I can get a Famicom controller for it, too. :3

Most have adapters. If you search online, there's dozens of them. There are also people who convert old controllers into USB by cutting the cord and rewiring it themselves. I assume that's what has been done with the Famicom controller Ketsa mentioned, since those were hardwired to the system.
If I remember correctly, a company called SmartJoy made PlayStation 1/2 and original Xbox controller adapters. I think they made N64 controller adapters, too. Not sure about GameCube. Apparently they went out of business, though... I did not know that. Hmm.
Anyway, a site called RetroUSB.com has adapters for NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, and Atari 2600. The Atari adapter also works with Commadore and Sega Master System controllers.
Maybe another company has filled in the gap left by SmartJoy. I can only hope.

In my case, my SNES controller is pre-built with a USB cord in it. You can find it at most any electronics store in Japan. Same goes for PS2-->USB converters, as well as USB accessories that recieve Wiimote and PS3/PS4 wireless signals.
