Cox network/upload issues resolved

In brief: Cox cable users, you should be able to upload and surf Inkbunny reliably again.

Over the last fortnight we've received reports of upload issues and poor performance, all coming from members using Cox Communications as their ISP.

We reached out to our host, LeaseWeb, and they responded today:

"

The last few days we experienced network issues with our COX PNI. The issues which caused performance degradation were due to interface errors in Ashburn. Currently we have moved the faulty circuit out of production and we are troubleshooting it. Our traffic is now tacking another path -we have shifted it to NY-. The situation should be more stable now but you may notice a little bit more latency than usual. When the link is fixed we will move traffic back to Ashburn/Washington.

What this means:
Our host connects directly to the Cox network in Ashburn, Virginia (shown as "Washington D.C." in their network map), in an attempt to provide the best service to Cox users at the lowest cost.

A fault with this connection caused it to drop packets, which led to a slower and unreliable connection. This traffic is now being routed via New York until the fault can be identified and repaired.

I hate Cox.  They're a bunch of Dix...  ;-)

Seriously though, this is the kind of thing that drove me away from Cox.  Fighting these sorts of battles almost DAILY, as an end user?  Not cool.

Glad things are somewhat sorted for now, at least!  LeaseWeb seems to be on the ball.  :-D

We have generally been happy with their support response, yes!
That's one reason we're sticking with them, for now. :-)

Hmm, I'm on AT&T and downloads from IB have been kinda slow for me too, although I didn't realize how slow until actually checking. According to speedtest.net, my download speed is about 15Mbit/s or somewhere around 1.6MBytes/s. However, when downloading a 3.5MByte video from IB, I'm only getting 100 to 200kBytes/s throughput. If I download the same file through an ssh tunnel to another host (with a gigabit internet connection), I get almost 1MByte/s throughput.

We've seen general slowness before, unrelated to packet loss. It is hard to determine precisely where the issue lies; we suspect it may be an attempt by ISPs to limit their transit costs, or to charge for high-quality access to their customers (as appears to be the case for streaming video providers).

When using Time Warner, I found IB downloads started very fast but eventually slowed to 400kbit/sec. This was a consistent pattern and it seemed clear that someone in the middle was shaping the traffic.

We're strongly considering the use of a U.S.-based cache server for material available to users without a cookie (the vast majority of content on Inkbunny). It'd require some work on the code side, but it'd probably be worth the effort; we should really avoid cookies on such requests anyway.

I don't know how accurate it is, but ping to a LeaseWeb router in the path shows about 30% packet loss (inkbunny itself doesn't seem to answer pings). I opened a ticket with more details :)

Comcast has better internet if you have Xfinity Internet. But if you hate them well other companies will provide you the fastest internet you could ever have.

The issue is that while they may be fast to some places, they are slow to others - occasionally deliberately so, in the hope of extracting money from people like our hosts, or the people they pay for transit to you.
