Back in the late 90s before I even discovered emulation, there were these 100 in 1 NES knockoffs just starting to show up in flea markets and dubious places. Weird place to see the Skinhead Mario hack, but a young me was like "Wow, someone can even do that?! I bet Nintendo would HATE that, that's so cool!"
Since then I'd discovered emulation, romhacking and all that. There's an amazing amount of offensive for the sake of being offensive kind of romhacks for the nes. SNES too. Early chans were like that too. Sometimes just... for the heck of it. Seemingly.
It has a purpose, mind, Any punk can tell you. It repels people. It's a shield. Corporate suits, Good boys, nice guys. True down to grits offensiveness beyond edginess can't be marketed to, can't be marketed. And beyond that, traditionally, family values old guard conservatives types HATED it. And honestly.. It's a bit fun. It's a bit fun to just say a bunch of shit and get away with it, knock a pole or two down, break shit. It is fun.
The queer community often protected itself with just a bit of offensiveness too. Still does in some ways.
... Now I can't tell you where it happened. Can't pinpoint it. There were forces that had always tried to hijack the punk scene and similar scenes, don't get me wrong, but somewhere, The offensiveness grew malice.
That sounds off. How do I explain this?
Being offensive for the sake of being offensive had traditionally been a SHIELD.
But somewhere, it has become a SWORD.
Rather then being used to protect a group, a community, from outside influence by repelling those who don't understand, It's being used to invade. To hurt.
I'm still wrapping my head around it, but it's like.. When you're just having a good time with your friends in your personal space, I get it. It's an extra salt circle too, keeping people out. It helps a space feel like yours, like no one's here to tell you what to do.
But I can't understand going out of the way to make people in THEIR own spaces feel uncomfortable and hurt. I can't understand making "u mad?" your entire personality and purpose. Making the offending of others your entire purpose.
