Windows 11

by
I've been using Windows 11 for about three days now.  I'm ready to upgrade to Windows 10 again.

I HATE the windows 11 taskbar.  I don't like the windows 11 start menu.  I greatly dislike the windows 11 windows explorer.  Calculator is about the same as windows 10's.

Task bar - Tiny icons only, Absolutely no way to turn off "combine windows".  If you have 3 notepads open, you only get to see a single tiny square notepad icon.  You must click that to then see the three notepads.  The option to disable this stupid option was in 7, 8, and 10.  The lack of it is amazingly annoying to me and makes having multiple windows open a pain in the ass to switch quickly between things.  I hate it and this is the reason I am probably abandoning windows 11.

Start Menu - It looks like windows 3.1.  You have to click start button, then find the tiny "all apps" button to show the more normal start menu.  Technically tolerable, but a huge downgrade from 10, which was already a big downgrade from 7.

Windows Explorer - less intuitive right click menu.  Want to make a new folder? Right click, navigate to "more options", find new folder.  Want to copy? Figure out which of the tiny icons is the copy button.  There is no text that says "copy", just a tiny icon that could be copy if you crossed your eyes and assumed that because it was next to a pair of scissors it had to be copy.

Seriously, 11 is a downgrade from 10 which was a downgrade from 7.  It's like Microsoft wants us to move to linux.  If it hadn't been free I would be demanding a refund.

That sounds about as I expected. The Windows UI just sucks more and more and more.

The only reason I personally haven't moved to Linux yet is that nothing comes with it.

Have you tried Classic Shell or one of its successors?

I have not yet tried any.  There is a 3rd party patch for explorer that might work to make the taskbar not as awful, but I am not sure if it will have to be reapplied after every windows update or not.

Windows XP is still the best Windows.

Yeah reading that whole thing only re-affirms my choice to stay on win7/linux as a primary OS and refuse to go lower in usability even though higher in iteration. I have tested a win11 install in vmware, its a condensed mess, and will not support CSM motherboard settings for older hardware (UEFI/TPM 2.0+ required).

For work, I am now basically required to install win10 on all new client's machines, but I disable uefi and enable legacy CSM before installing so when microshaft urges the user to 'upgrade for free', it will forcably try but fail from lack of hardware support even, though it's present. It is my technical way of giving them the finger. It is also loaded with stepped up xbox services/DRM and kills pirated game installs. Pass.

The only thing win11 does well is network discovery, it'll find/connect to anything, primarily for sniffing out local networks to try to download its updates through other machines that are online when yours is intentionally not, it even re-activates your network adaptor automatically without permission in attempts to do so. NO. That is not supposed to happen. You need to keep that ethernet cable unplugged to know your completely offine, and if you have a built in wifi adaptor, youre screwed, and not in a good way.

May the 4th be with you. :3

Disable the built in WiFi in bios should work? Or is the bios that bad to not let you?-

That depends on the BIOS vendor; mainly in modern laptops you can disable the wifi adaptor unless it is locked out intentionally by vender, which is what I mainly deal with these days as tower PCs for standard users are phasing out, unless the user builds their own or has one (bought)built.

Makes sense, I build my own computers so I get all the gory bios details-
I even set a 1 second HDD delay before first access because I can- a laptop user’s head would explode being told something so amazing and free-

I heard bad things, and you’re confirming it-
I wish Visual Studio wasn’t so good, then I’d be on Linux as my main os-

I understand your pain I just bought a laptop and during the set-up it automatically initiated the upgrade to Windows 11 thing. I went from Windows XP to Windows 10 I don't recall spending time with 7 or 8. Honestly I just assumed go back to XP then deal with the current graphical user interfaces that the newer windows have

Cairo Shell is MOSTLY decent but does not fix the Explorer-related problems.

Consider using the "Feedback Hub" thing.

The best solution is using UNIX.  %^)
