My feelings on Animaniacs 2020...

I don't have any.  That's not because I'm indifferent to what I've seen, it's because I haven't seen the show at all.

Okay, so clickbait title aside, this isn't so much about Animaniacs as it is about the major change in the modern entertainment model.

Back when I was a kid, shows aired on TV and there were ads in-between episodes.  Yes, the ads were annoying, but they had a predictable format and were tolerable.  The content was still free to anyone who had a TV, or at least had a basic cable subscription.  You didn't need to be special, have a particular kind of TV, or have a credit card.  The only annoyance was that there was no way to pay extra to have the ads taken away, though a VCR could fix that if you had enough patience.  Later, there was always the option to buy stuff on DVD and you could own and re-watch the shows forever to your heart's content.  It wasn't perfect, but it made sense.

Today... you need to subscribe to a service for anything.  There's dozens of services with their own stupid rules and gimmicks.  That's on top of the multitude of subscriptions you need just to get "basic" TV, because every channel wants to be paid separately (my parents pay about $300/mo for cable TV).  All the subscriptions are temporary and you don't own squat.  Worst of all, even after subscribing, you still have to deal with ads, because "subsidization" or some nonsense.

Look, I know content costs money to create, but I can't support a model where you must pay a monthly fee to get access.  Either make it free with ads, or let me pay to remove the ads.  Being forced to pay for content and have to deal with ads, or pay even more money and still not be able to permanently own or watch stuff at your leisure, is just too fucking stupid for me to tolerate.  This subscription nonsense needs to die in a fire.

So, yeah, I don't think I'll even have the chance to see the show.  From what I hear, opinions vary wildly, from it being awesome, to it not being as good as the original, to it being "woke" and disrespectful.  From the short clips I've seen, I'm not terribly impressed with it, but... whatever.  It's a show, and a business model, that I simply cannot support.

On that note, I'm pissed that Cartoon Network refuses to release all the seasons of Regular Show on DVD.  I have the first three seasons on disc already, and I love them, but the remaining five seasons are exclusively available via streaming.  Sorry, but I'm the kind of guy who likes re-watching random stuff every few months, maybe even years in the future, and I don't want another damn lease.  If I can't own it on DVD or Blu-ray or on my NAS, I won't buy it.

Fuck streaming and fuck subscriptions.  Make it free with ads, pay to remove ads completely, or buy it in a store and own it forever.  Stop trying to turn the whole TV industry into the games industry -- a micro-transaction playground where everything is an indefinite lease, and end users are apparently not allowed to actually enjoy anything.

I kinda feel the same way about all these subscriptions and ads just to see certain shows

I cannot help but agree with what you are saying. It's honestly getting out of hand.

All these media companies think there will be some industry shakedown, and ultimately only two or three media monopolies will exist.  They're just hoping they get to be the monopoly.

If that were to happen (haha!), subscriptions might end up being tolerable.  But as long as there's 50 different services out there, each with their own exclusives, it's going to be a mess.  No way in hell am I paying $500/month just to watch a handful of shows.

It's the same reason I hate all these artists going Patreon exclusive, BTW.  One dollar a month to one artist is no big deal, but I'm not paying $500/month to 500 different artists get the same kind of content I normally get for free, especially since most of that money goes to Patron, anyway.  Once someone goes Patreon exclusive... I just never see their art again, and I learn to forget them.  Too bad.  If they want to make money, they can do commissions just like any sane artist.

I'll pay to get rid of ads since I value my time more than my money, but otherwise the subscription model can go to hell.

I also find that infuriating.  I  had a cable tv DVR box that I had recorded a bunch of shows that I wanted to keep long term.  Cable company tells me that they are no longer supporting that box and would be bringing out a replacement box.  Whoops, no possible way to transfer those recorded shows to the new box.  Tough shitsky.   I'd drop the cable tv entirely and use broadcast, except it's a bundle with my internet and phone line.

DVR reminds me of the same thing that happened when CD-ROMs wiped out floppy drives and DVD wiped out VHS.  The industry has always wanted it easy and cheap to distribute their own content, but hell if you could record your own data and make it portable.

Yeah, it's possible, but you have to jump through all kinds of "illegal" hoops to do it. Stupid.

Call it trademark genericification if you want.  DVDs and Blu-ray... same diff.  All I care about is that it lasts virtually forever and I don't need "permission" to use it.

Try living in Canada. We have far less options for streaming services compared to the US. Our main ones are Disney+, Netflix, & Amazon Prime Video. The new Animaniacs we can't even get in Canada as they are on Hulu which we can't get in Canada either. And The Simpsons Season 31 should be on Disney+, but it still isn't here in Canada. I did find this site, which is what I have been using to watch the ones I can't get here, even though we should be able to... https://kimcartoon.to/

A yearly subscription for Disney+ here is C$90. I pay once a year and then I share access with my brother.
Netflix has three plans and you have to pay per month. Basic is C$9.99, Standard is C$14.99 and Premium is C$16.99. My brother pays for the premium and shares access with me.
Amazon Prime video is included with Amazon Prime. It is C$79/year or C$7.99/month.

Disney+ is pretty good, they have lots of good content and so does Netflix in my opinion. Amazon is horrible. You pay a monthly or yearly fee and half the video's on they have they expect to pay for another subscription to watch them, so I don't use them.

I haven't had cable for a couple of years now because the price, to me, was just way to high for the very few channels I watched. It is so stupid that you have to pay so much just to watch a few channels because they are part of different packages. But the way I look at it, if I am paying a monthly fee to watch TV, then I shouldn't have any ad's. If someone doesn't want to pay for TV then you get the ad's to help pay for it.

But see, this new world we are living in with all Digital content only being rented and never own is like video's games for PC (as an example) now. Everything is purchased digital and trying to find a physical copy of most games these days is basically impossible. For me this sucks, because I honestly prefer a physical copy and box over digital only. And being digital only they can shut down the servers and now your purchase is worthless and you can no longer even play it offline.

Oh yeah... I should have mentioned that!  Streaming isn't available in all countries and not everyone has fiber Internet, so what are they supposed to do?  Americans generally don't give a damn about the rest of the world, but there's a ton of people in our own midwest that can't get decent Internet because ISPs refuse to build infrastructure out there.

Yet another case of, "You're too small a market segment for us to care.  Piss off!"

It's always sad when companies go out of their way to make sure you can't buy their products.  Classic copyright logic.

Yeah.  I remember when cable first started.  It was touted as watching TV shows without the annoying commercials.  You paid a monthly "subscription" fee and could watch any show or movie you wanted commercial free.  Now, even the "premium" channels are rife with commercials for any legal thing you can imagine.  I've got a DVD player and, as I can find and afford them, I buy the shows and/or movies I like.  I also have a subscription to Netflix and have over 100 DVDs in my queue and watch them when they arrive.  But, except for sports, I rarely watch "regular" TV any more.

Luckily I snagged Hulu’s 1.99 a month Black Friday deal. But I agree, it’s getting crazy. If I just want to watch Central Park, The Mandalorein(spelling?), Lower Decks, etc... oi...

Ah, yes... the temporary deal until they jack it up to the normal rate.  I don't trust claims that you can "cancel at any time."

In the past (more than a decade ago), I had a few subscriptions that auto-renewed with increased rates, and when I tried to cancel, they tried to prevent me from doing so, to the point where I nearly had to file a dispute with my credit card company.  I have a natural distrust of companies that try to automatically bill my card on a scheduled basis.  It's why I still pay all my bills by hand every month.

I wouldn't be so cynical if various people hadn't tried to screw me.  Leases and subscriptions, by nature, are low-trust compared to purchases.  I don't even care how low the fees are.

That's not a problem nowadays with virtual card numbers. Several banks offer them, or places like privacy.com. You can enable and disable the card at any time and set spending limits per merchant.

On a fun little lifehack side note... Firefox with ultimate adblocker, and a free Hulu account means you can watch free Hulu without any ads because they use the same setup that youtbe does which means their ads are not a part of the actual stream of the show you are watching.

It just sucks that streaming services not only all want to split off eachother, instead of being in just one or two places, and have their own pay-for streaming "service" but they also want to go the route of cable and go from pay for no ads to pay WITH ads as they slowly turn the heat up til you are boiling to death in ads and paying for it.

I think if they keep this up and there is no way to escape ads in the future, I'll just stop watching TV altogether and just stick to the stuff I like and have in dvd, bluray and harddrive.

I generally disagree that paid streaming services are bad, because they enable a lot of new (or recreated as the case may be) content that would otherwise not exist. Do you think Animaniacs would have come back if it were up to Cartoon Network, Disney channel or Nickelodeon? Of course not, the appeal is too limited for them to be interested in bumping one of their cash cows to air it, but it can work in a streaming context.

And of course there is always Plex and the high seas for the purists.

Companies really do be double and triple dipping on their content. I watched TV- actual paid for subscription television- for the first time in a decade yesterday as I was stuck in one place, and my god it was 75% commercials! There was barely any time for the show! And I thought "People pay 200 bucks a month for this?"
