Paint Tool Sai corrupting random files?

Pretty much in the title. A lot of the .Sai files of the new pics I've done have somehow become corrupted. I get the "Canvas failed to load" error. And the file size either reads 0 or 8kb for some reason.

I've seen all manor of fixes, that haven't worked for me so far. but I wpuld really like to know the underlying problem. This is the first time I've ever had this issue with Sai and I've been using this program for the better part of a decade. So I know there's an exact reason why it's doing it.

UPDATE: Okay, this is getting scary. It's happening in faster. Things I saved on a seperated drive for safety, are showing up as errors minutes later. All my other files on this drive are fine, just the Sai files. I switched to a different version, now I'm just scared to use it for anything.

can you uninstall and reinstall it?

Yeah, I did that. Right now it's touch and go. It even affected images that were merely connected to it by name. Really freaking weird. Double backed up my art files and switched to a different version of Sai. Gonna be touch and go with Sai for a while.

Update to Sai 2 immediately. Sai is technically badly outdated so it shouldn't be used at all. You can get Sai 2 here: https://www.systemax.jp/en/sai/devdept.html

I've done that. Still got the errors though.

I swore off SAI a long time ago thanks to all its reliability issues.

Sigh, I may have to follow suit. Iwonder if there's a competent .sai file converter out there.

hey i had this same problem,my fix was this.
1- go to options and change the maximum canvas size to something over 8000x8000 (10000x10000 is the limit)
2-if you are opening an old drawing, don't open the file from inside the program, instead go directly to the file, right click then "open with" and select the sai.exe you are using
hope this helps you, not sure what causes this, but this made so every time a file start acting weird, i can open it no problems

if that doesn't work, try using another version, i'm using sai 1.1.0 as of now.
But a general recommendation, even if sai is really easy to use, try learning another program, sai is a 32bit program, it can use only up to 4gb of ram, back when resolutions where smaller and a 1000x1000 was considered a huge picture it was ok, but now the more details you add to a pic makes the program run slower and slower and some pictures take multiple seconds to save.
I heard that firealpaca and Clip studio are really good alternatives, and Firealpaca is free.

Also, glad to know you are back, https://inkbunny.net/s/293527 and that CreamxCris comic you made corrupted me beyond repair lol.

good luck.

Tried all of that. I honestly don't know what the heck is going on with it. But it seems to be affecting the newest pics I've done. Those were at 5000 x 5000 pixels. All the other images seem to be fine except one older one that I messed around with. I just wish I knew what was happening. Regardless, I guess I'm going to have to shelve Sai. It's done the exact same thing to two wips I was working on. I get the same canvas error.

That comic literally put me on the NSFW artist map btw. LOL No one really knew who I was until that comic started circulating. XD

In which I wonder what would happen if you ran chkdsk...

That said, is that a clean copy of Sai from systemax.jp, or is that one of the hundreds of dirty copies from the rest of the internet?

Also, the tech preview of Sai 2, it's an excellent choice.

Just got Sai 2. We'll see what happens, but it still gave me errors on certain images. Namely, the newest one's I've just done. It's strange, I didn't start getting these errors until I started working on the most recent WIP I was doing. Then it just spread to the other new works that were over 5000 Pixels. A few of them are gone forever.

Are you running Windows 7 or 8, by any chance?
(Windows 10 may also have this feature, but limits it to specific folders. Still worth a try.)

Right click on the file in question, choose Properties, and see if a tab named Previous Versions or File History shows up.
If not, right click an empty spot in that same folder, and choose Properties. Again, looking for either File History or Previous Versions.

Also, I'd still consider this a valid reason to run chkdsk after backing up important files to another storage device or the cloudsomeone else's computer the cloud.

Also², if that folder is a Dropbox or OneDrive folder, check their respective web interfaces for file history. You may be able to recover some of your work that way.

I'm using Win7. I ran HDtune just to see if I had errors. S far, there are non on my main drive, I'll check the secondary tonight. I'm not using any cloud storage for anything, mostly just back up drives. There's nothing in the previous history tabs either.

Not sure if this helps, but SAI for me has this nasty bug that I can replicate.  If I have it open up a photoshop file, that's it. it's done. It's unable to save in anything other than a PSD format from that point on.  If I try to save as an SAI file it'll give a big error,

Not sure if it's related but it's definitely something to know

That's not exactly what's happening to me, but good to know none the less. O_O
