Your characters.

I have to ask, this is a more personal opinion kinda thing, and I felt like having a bit of a discussion or chat about the subject, which is OCs, original characters. Characters you adopt, or create and design yourself, or win in an auction, or w/e the case may be, these are legally yours and all, and this is what i'm curious about. What are characters to you? just.. property to collect like PVC figures? Role Play characters? A personal piece of yourself?

I myself own.. probably a dozen characters, half of which I haven't posted publically, or more. For me, my characters mean a lot. I love each of them, I Role Play with them, I write about them, I give them personality, a bit of my own, a bit of influences from my favorite shows, anime, video games, what have you. but they're so important and personal to me, that I try to treat them with as much love and respect as I do myself. Meaning I stay away from publically posting porn of them. There's only a few pics out there of my rabbit Ingrid in a NSFW manner, one of which by Sallyhot I dont consider Ingrid really, and the other by
sallyhot
sallyhot
which is newer that I colored myself, I do consider her, in a non-canon manner. It's censored though, because I don't like to show off my characters like that. It gives me the same feeling as posting nudes of myself online would, I just wouldn't do that.

Heck it wasn't until last year that I even started commissioning art of my characters at all. I find that I'm not the only one that feels this way about their characters. Sallyhot, my bf, he wouldn't make or have NSFW art made or his own OCs. Yet, I see so many artist or folks get art of their characters like that. So that's where my curiosity peaks. Still, if it wasn't for that, a lot of us artists wouldn't get commissioned! So I'm glad folks do that. Anyway, what's your take on characters, and how you treat them, portray them, use them, own them, etc?

I don't really have words to explain it, but I will never put any of my characters up as "adoptables". That entire practice is completely stupid and should go back to 90s Geocities where it belongs.

A total of 3 of the characters I have, now, are "adoptables"- but I have no intention of giving them up, because I've already developed the characters and personality through my writing. Most everybody else in my cast are characters I developed through writing, and so each has their own personality and quirks. They are dear to me, and I won't deny that I have some reservations.

I don't have any real problem when it's my fursona in the thick of things- I like the idea of being amorous with multiple people, and in the narrative sense it works for him because of his background. That said, I'm not as keen to let other characters I own be commissioned with other characters owned by other people; partially because it doesn't fit them to be as amorous, but mostly because I feel I'd get possessive otherwise.

I'm also less-comfortable letting people write about them. One of my readers asked if they could use some of my characters for their own spin-off series, and I almost had an anxiety attack at the idea. I felt like my characters would cease to be my own if I allowed anybody to write about them in a fashion that went against their character (to say nothing of the idea they pitched to me, which made me cringe). By the same token I'm not as comfortable writing about another person's character because if I do I'd want to do them justice, and not be a carbon-copy of what -I- think they're like.

More than anything, though, I feel like it's up to the owner to decide what's best, and for that decision to be respected. If that means letting those characters get cozy with others, go for it. And if a writer or artist should be uncomfortable with the idea of one or more of their characters becoming a commissioner cum-dump (as I've seen happen to some artists), I think they should put their foot down and place restrictions without worrying about what their fans will think.

Yeah that makes sense :)

and I shoulda mentioned that I dont look down on folks do y'know, have their characters mess around with others and all, but at the same time, I can't help but feel some resentment to folks who join a YCH with their female characters worshiping some male's di*k. Is there character really slutty like that? or they just wanna see them in that situation? I always wonder. xD

Though I wouldn't say it applies to everybody (not even half), I've always felt that some folks just like getting so much attention. ^^;

An OC needs to be owned and drawn by the same person.

All of my own original OCs are certainly personal pieces of myself.  At least I've always considered that.  ^^;

I do have a number of adopts as well, but so far have actually done next to nothing with them so far........Mainly because I DO have a set plan for them to be integrated into my little OC universe.  Just sadly keeping them on the perpetual shelves until I actually proceed with said ideas....

No character belongs anywhere, no character exists on purpose, every character is going to die.  Look at more porn on TV.

At first, my OC's weren't anything more than fancharacters that I made, I made stories out of them. I made them out of things that I thought were cool, so I combined ideas together and made them hybrids. But as I started writing my own fiction, I realized nobody cared who my OC's were. People only complained they were Gary Stus and not fit to hang out with the main cast. But then I met my best friend, and took one of these Gary Stus. I fleshed him out into almost his own character, and even though he wasn't my first OC, he quickly became my go-to because he could be anything I wanted him to be, a loony, a perv, a soldier, cannon fodder, etc.

Now, I do have an author insert, which is apparently different. I rarely use him for much of anything, still sticking to that same OC I use for everything. But then again, I'm much more interested in girls, and female OC's I enjoy commissioning art of. To be clear, the OC females I love aren't actually mine, they're my best friend's. But he made them so well, that I felt it was wrong to not have them drawn out, to not be seen. And that's where I'm at: I don't really care about my own OC's. Sure, I'll commission them once in a blue moon, but my friend's OC's I feel are special. I'd commission all the art I could if I could afford it. They deserve to be seen, and I'm more than willing to make it so. It would be a disservice to leave them between me and him. So yeah, my own OC's are for RP's. But the OC's in my gallery deserve to be seen. :)

I see! It's cool you care about your friend's characters and such like that. :)

Even if these characters aren't real, to us, they kinda are! The connection is there, the passion and love for them is there for a lot of us. :) I wouldn't give away or trade my Kate, Ingrid, or Mynt for anything!(Though if someone were to hand me a million dollars.. I mean idk. XD

Not an easy question to put into words. Take my Cyber Hounds. There actually based off of Xenosaga. Monica more so though. Her blue hair i got from Kos-Mos.  Wakka was more from Star Ocean 3 based off of the use of Creation Energy for space ships. But both of my cyber dogs took a lot of time to make. Art wise not as much but more so for there BG story's. I spent days typing out the details for them.

So from that that's where each of them have a personal part of me. The excitement i got from typing those days was real and i still get a hit of excitement when i read there BG's even today. ^^  Art wise it took me a long time to get art of them to for much the same reasons. The only reason i opened up and got art of them was from not having anything cute or passionate to show or see for myself.

Sophia though became something different then both my hounds. My hounds where a part and desire of mine to wanna live for hundreds of years as a cyborg. Sophia is the part of me that represents my softer kinder side. Starting out RP wise as you know SaL and became more over time. Even changing my views on a lot of things i didn't really care for for the better.

Then new things came around. SL with Sophia. A crazy time but a fun one t that that lead to Sophia actually getting married. ^^  From that moment on shes been on and still is on a landslide to greatness along with my hounds.

But yeah my reasons are much like yours SaL.  Both are a part of myself and so much so that i'm usually very protective about. ^_^

Not sure if that really answered anything but i hope it gives you something to ponder or....some. XD

I have so many characters. :o

Some are extensions/parts of myself, others exist just to fill a role in the world my characters inhabit.  Some began as background characters but ended up getting more fleshed out.

So yeah, my cast is sort of a mix.  With few exceptions, they're all created by me.  No adopts or anything, but a few characters are borrowed from a friend.

I have quite a few characters that I'll use when I rp, if I don't make a new one :p
But some I do keep and prefect, and when I do this these characters become a part of me. Some more then other, but in many cases they almost become an expression of something inside of me... not really sure that I can explain it though :p

I think you explained it perfect! :)

It's the same way for me, I mean.. when they become a part of me and such. It's so fun to bring these characters to life isn't it?

Yes it is! ^^
And it can be so surprising how they develop, sometimes becoming completely different then when you started.

I have a few handfuls of characters I have that I use for my own writing, roleplaying, and to explore fun Idea's. To me my characters are a part of me, and I tend to make them reflect a side of my personality that's enhanced by the anime, video games, and other mediums I enjoy and find inspire me. I care a lot about my characters, and only trust a select few people to engage with them that I find trustworthy.

That said however the main purpose for the existence of my characters is to allow me to explore fun new idea's not bound by reality, NSFW or otherwise. I myself tend to be rather self conscious and use my character to express sides of myself I struggle to in real life, or as I said to explore Idea's and concepts and exercise my creativity. From playing the hero of the story, to a villain, to anything in between. Times like this are where my characters are less a reflection of me, but more just a medium for entertainment. Though I find I can only do such thing's with people I know or trust depending on the character, and all in the spirit of fun.
Blazeymix
6 years, 1 month ago
Yeah! That's a really awesome way to look at it. :) At the end of the day, it's all about the spirit of fun. I do like the idea of these characters providing a medium for entertainment for sure. I love writing so when I use my characters a lot of my past experiences come out, but are used to interact in new situations. It's pretty neat, but sometimes it feels a little too real ^^; I've cried over some RP at times.

The characters we make, and the way we use and express them often allows us to experience a living dream in a sense, where we can enact our desires, confront our fears, explore our dark side, express our sorrow, play out our love, and live the dream! From playing the hero who saves they day, acting out the tyrant of the world who rules with an iron fist, the prisoner who seeks their freedom, or the day to day worker who finds true love. I agree they can feel very real, in the same way a dream or nightmare can.

my ocs mean alot to me and
i even have my own settings for them
and i altough would rp as some of them
I honestly i am okay with fanart of them doing stuff they usually wouldnt
aslong its not completly out of character

yeah. That's pretty straightforward, but a good honest perspective. :)
I guess it's just a matter if the person is comfortable with sharing their characters in a NSFW fashion or not. Some are, some aren't. Even though I belong in the latter, I respect folks who do. Sometimes it just blows my mind a little. :P

How much my characters mean to me varies a lot, and usually it's how much of myself I include into them.  My "main" characters were all based on different parts of my own personality, though usually mixed up and exaggerated to make things more interesting for their respective stories.  These "core" characters mean a lot to me.  Some of them, like Wac, have matured a lot and had their personalities change as they get older, not just over years of story development.

Some of them I use for porn, but my taste in porn is largely psychological rather than physical, so I tend to show their relationship status rather than action.  People have sex for complicated reasons, so I feel my characters should, too.  It makes them seem more believable as real, living people.  As long as their relationships are believable, there's nothing wrong with some naughty stuff.  I much prefer husband/wife sex, though, as opposed to random stuff.  Still, I'm not very protective of my characters, even the ones that mean a lot to me, so I actually enjoy rule 34 quite a bit.  My audience knows that only the stuff I draw (or approve) counts as canon.

I do have some characters that only exist for running gags, background noise, or porn, but that's rare.  I couldn't bring myself to sell any characters just because that's just silly.  I've fully adopted 2 characters, but only because I felt they had potential for further biographical development.  Characters don't have much value without a personality, and even one-shot characters have to have a little depth to them.  My cat Leslie was created strictly as a one-shot, but surprisingly turned into a regular favorite of mine.  You never know when a character is really going to click or not, so I never just hack together throwaway characters.

Existentialism is a common theme in my comics, especially for my raccoons, who are self-aware cartoon characters.  I like doing a lot of gags that make my characters question their own motives and desires, make the audience wonder why they really care about imaginary drawings on paper, and poke fun at the furry fandom always treating characters as nothing more than adult toys.  Heck, I'm fascinated that artists can actually become jealous of their own completely imaginary characters.  8)

Cool perspective! :) ya I think it's fine if peeps get NSFW art of their characters. Just me personally, I wouldn't share them publically. It'd be more of a personal thing for myself.

All my characters are ones I've created myself.
There are the exceptions of very few characters that are not mine that I've done for other artists who own them, ie; art trades, Secret Santa, gifts, story requests.

My fursona, Moyo Jais Mongoose (Moyomongoose), feels like a personal piece of me.

I've lost count of all the characters I've drawn images of as there are so many of them.
And as far as counting every character in every story I have, whether drawings exist of them or not, I probably have more characters than Carter's has pills.

I see! :) I never really liked adopting much but I also suck at designing characters so that's why I've adopted a few at this point. I'm great at writing stories, RP and all that, but ya designing the look of a character isn't easy.

I would never buy a character. I design all my characters myself, although I sometimes incorporate other peoples characters in stories if so requested and/or I know they are OK with it.

Some characters I use for roleplaying. These I consider a bit more.personal than those I use in stories - although there are overlaps. I usually don't mind if other people borrow my characters, be it for porn or other things.

The way I RP and write stories, the same character can appear in different world settings that would each be internally consistent, but not canon to each other, you could consider those alternate realities. As such if someone else writes or draws that char in whatever look or situation , it wozld easily be yet another instance. Same if someone decided to draw a snuff or vore scene, those would not affect my RPs and I'm fine with that :)

I see! Cool to know. I'm not into Vore really but it doesn't bother me as much as it might other people. Anyway, I've had a lot of RPs and I've done pretty much a similar thing. Same characters in different dimensions of sorts not canon to each other. The best RP I've had are freeform

I see it from a design point of view I tend not to have a large emotional attachment to them. I just like coming up with different characters / pictures. I do have a character I like to keep her close to me. But more in a way that she represents and is a mascot of my work really ^^

i'm only seeing this now xD   I have a few adopts and quite a number of ocs human, scalie or sanicwise. some made from past versions of the ol' hog himself as a no power(no speed) swordsman, with some of the ocs being descendants of him. other ocs like i have a few that are adult only in mind, so only adult art is made for them. the humanish ones might never get that far. one oc she is straight up a sex hungry slut made for sex lore wise as well xD

Seems like most people have a character like that :P one character dedicated to their own sexual fantasies. It's all in good fun. I never had an OC phase where I made recolors of Sonic or decendents. I'm sure most peeps started out that way, but by the time I began RPing I was already an adult xD   So I had more original ideas in mind. Thanx for sharing

I feel much the same as you, I pour my heart into my characters and if they are used in lewd situations I tend to count that as an AU in some form or other (there is a set clean canon for these characters that will never go away).
However I also recognize them as fictional, so whatever I do with them is not really hurting anyone real. And it's like, if I'm okay seeing official characters like this, why not my OCs? It's not like I'm religious hanging out in a place like IB.

It did take a long time for me to start using my personal avatar as anything other than a proxy for the writer capacity, and when I started using him in actual rps and stories, clean and adult, I had to divorce myself from him a bit, recognize that he's not me anymore...though he still semi-represents me if that makes sense?

Ultimately the decision to use them or not is entirely your own, you should never let anyone tell you how to use your OCs; they are yours. If you want them in lewds, go for it. If not, don't.

(I realize this is an old topic but when I randomly came across it, it spoke to me, heh ^^)
