Speeding up the bunny: two caches sponsored by OVH

Recent upgrades increased our bandwidth use by 35%, so we're glad to announce an agreement with hosting provider OVH – sponsors of our ARM-based test cache – who've provided us £500 (~US$700) of credit to use over the next six months as a member of their Digital Launch Pad program.

We set to work immediately, placing in service two heavy-duty VMs with 250Mbps bandwidth each, 90GB RAM in total – about three times our main server's memory – plus 600GB fault-tolerant storage.

nimis: 4 x Intel Xeon E5-2620 v3 cores @ 2.4-3.2Ghz - 60GB RAM - 400GB triple-redundant storage
laute: 2 x Intel Xeon E5-2620 v3 cores @ 2.4-3.2Ghz - 30GB RAM - 200GB triple-redundant storage

These servers will take over a week to fill to capacity – indeed, it took a day just to fill up the RAM! They've already eliminated lag caused by backups and database replication on our secondary server.

The larger of the two new servers is at the Beauharnois data center in Quebec - just a short hop from our original East Coast cache sponsored by Blu Paw Radio, which it draws from to feed the Americas. New files will be fetched from our main server in the Netherlands over a series of underseas intertubes.

The second cache is hosted at a French site formerly used to make cans for Coca-Cola in Gravelines, between Calais and Dunkirk - home to the sixth largest nuclear power station in the world. The datacenter has fibre connections to London, Paris and Brussels, and lies 7ms from our main server.

We hope members enjoy the improvements, as we forge towards our one-millionth submission

Interesting that G - rated are almost half what's submitted. :D

Indeed! And you need only browse recent submissions for a bit to see some fabulous G-rated art. Being restricted to adults does not mean being restricted to adult topics.

I know! There's so MUCH good G rated work out there. Kudos to everyone to posts it and gives lie to the idea that IB is ONLY a cubsmut site! ;D

It's more than most have for their home PCs - but those people aren't sharing with everyone else. Servers are like buses; they don't go super-fast, but they can carry a lot of people at once.
Our caches tend to get around 80 file requests a second… and that's not all that high for servers.

Uh, thanks for the remedial lesson but I definitely didn't need it.  XD  I'm an experienced hardware tech and operate several high-end Minecraft servers as we speak.  :3

Good to know! It's not on your profile - you don't have one! - so I didn't want to assume. :-)

I never played Minecraft, though the Lego-like concept of "everything is a block" appeals…

With mods, it can be so much more, too!  It's not the best-selling PC game of all time for nothing!

My servers are oriented towards science, geology, electrical engineering, logistics, chemistry, etc.  SCIENCE!  Learn things while getting blown up by walking green dicks!

We have real working computers on the server, complete with IRC, telnet, and HTTP connectivity.  I can muck in minecraft!

Awesomesauce!!  Man, it's scary how far technology has come since I toyed around with web design back in the mid 90s.  Even five years ago I could picture network infrastructure in my head without too much trouble, but nowadays?  Shiz be crazy, yo!  Seems like just yesterday I was soldering a 68040 processor into my Mac LCII...

Each piece by itself is simple enough, but you get to the point where an infrastructure overview takes a two-page spreadsheet. The key is keeping sufficient details to make decisions without overloading.

Wait, does that only include stuff made/still visible? Cause I though we hit 1,000,000 a while ago!

We don't count deleted submissions or files or deleted/disabled/non-activated member accounts.
We are, however, above 1,000,000 non-deleted files, thanks to multiple-file submissions.

SoFurry is similarly at 752,737 submissions but their latest submission ID is 986,174.
Their ratio of deleted submissions is slightly higher (24% vs. 22%), probably because they're older.
As time goes by, the survival rate drops as people remove old art or close old accounts.

I think since about this update, I haven't been able to load any images on the site. Might have something to do with the Johannesburg cache since I'm in South Africa.

There seems to have been an unexpected restart of that node yesterday, and our caching software did not come back up correctly. I've reset it and will investigate further with the hosting company. Edit: Looking closer, it did try to come back up, but was initially unable to convert the name of Inkbunny's main server into an IP address. Possibly the VPS restarted before the host's networking was working.

If you see anything similar in the future, please file a ticket and we'll have a look.

Is there a proper place to make a feature request? I'd really like to see a 'Discover New Artists' function, that uses the same criteria as Popular - but only shows you artists you don't already watch.

The best place is a support ticket, but I'll note your suggestion in the development tracker - thanks!
