Character Description
Abe, or Chiyo, is well over 500-years-old. Now male, he is a demon but was formerly a human, a usagi kami, and a shinigami.

For one hundred and eight years Abe's life was fairly normal. He performed his duties as a shinigami, keeping his rather unique attitude, but one day in the middle of attempting to collect a rather beligerent old woman's soul, he was called to the altar of his family which, as a kami, he had been bound to guard. He met Kaworu, the last member of his family, and due to his obligation had to protect him until his issues were resolved and his life was set straight. Kaworu bore a lot of anger and bitterness from his neglectful father who had died on the day that Abe was forced to appear, and had closeted a lot of his emotions away, working and collecting material goods instead of facing his actual problems.

Being playful by nature, Abe felt it best to find someone for Kaworu to love. This resulted in his meeting Kotaro. Things were headed in a positive direction when an unfortunate incident ended up causing Kotaro to die. Kaworu, being very upset, called on the Dark Prince to transform him into a demon like Kumo but the Dark Prince had some news to provide before he would allow Kaworu to make that decision. He let Kawooru know that as soon as Kotaro left the shield and followed Kumo he knew he was going to die. Naturally one would expect a lot of fear from that, but Kotaro was never afraid. His only concern was helping Kumo if there was anyway possible. By distracting Minato for just a moment and sacrificing himself as a result, he unknowingly gave Kumo the advantage that let him kill Minato. As Kotaro saw Minato fly at him, and he knew his death was coming, he thought to himself, "I hope that this means I don't cause anymore trouble, and maybe this means that Kumo and Kaworu can be happy together now."

However there was a minor complication with Kotaro's hopes. None of the hopes he spoke had any chance of coming true. His death had caused Kaworu a considerable amount of trouble, and Kumo would never accept Kaworu's love because he knows how much Kaworu loves Kotaro. As mentioned previously, as was the case for Abe, when humans die for a noble deed, they become a kami. Kotaro was a human temporarily, but the rules of death for humans weren't a part of his fate. He was still bound to the same rules that kamis have. When kamis die they are allowed to see their hopes come true. He never had any hopes until those last moments, and he fudged them both considerably. He wasn't thinking of himself, however his hope of not causing Kaworu trouble could only come true if he wasn't dead. So the moment that Kaworu became aware of his death and broke down, Kotaro was brought back to life as the tanuki kami he had always been.

Kaworu, at that moment, vowed to become a demon under the condition that Kotaro and Abe would become demons as well. He did this because, with Minato dead, an impending civil war between the tanuki kami and the kitsune kami was on the horizon. Despite how horrible of an elder Minato was, she had no desire for war so with her death the fragile peace between the two kami clans had been broken. Despite the fact Kotaro had been brought back from the dead, being a kami would still put him in danger. He would have eventually been dragged into the civil war and since he wasn't particularly gifted at combat, would have likely died. He also chose to make Abe a demon because Kaworu knew that Abe hated his life as a shinigami, and wanted to achieve freedom again. With all parties in agreement, all three became demons.

With Abe's new found freedom as a demon he remains a loyal friend to both Kotaro and Kaworu and lives with them, the two young demons considering him a big brother. Unfortunately Abe now has the desire to seek vengeance against Kuro for the way he was treated, and is trying his best to find a way to make it happen.
Personality
Abe prefers to be indirect most of the time, and waxes philosophically with his rather loud sing song voice. He enjoys playing games and hides most of his sadness behind his sarcasm and personality. He is, unfortunately, rather obsessed with seeking vengeance against his former teacher Kuro.
Likes/Dislikes
He likes teasing people and changing his age randomly. He dislikes the okami and talking about his feelings.
Background/History
Chiyo, being Abe's human name, died shortly after her eighth birthday. Her father was unfortunately a drunkard, and as such Abe has little tolerance for alcohol. At any rate, Chiyo's father he was unable to fulfill his duties or maintain employ, so he gained several loans and favors from some Yakuza to keep up his habit and keep his family sparsely taken care of. Chiyo was a very happy child, and was very dedicated to her mother. She was perfectly happy with this existance, but unfortunately bad dealings with Yakuza rarely end well. When he was unable to repay his debts and he seemed to not respond to the various beatings and threats, they decided to go directly for his family.

The Yakuza forced Chiyo's father to rape her, beheading him during the process. If that wasn't horrific enough, they went for her mother. She begged and pleaded, despite how shocked and horrified she already was, for them to take her life instead. She promised to do anything. They merely stabbed her for interfering and left her to slowly die from internal bleeding after watching her mother suffer the same fate as her father. She held onto her mother's corpse until she let out her last breath. When humans die for a noble deed, they become a kami. Chiyo's only desire despite the pain she had endured and the terror of watching her father die was to make sure that the Yakuza didn't hurt her mother. While she was unsuccessful, her death was due to a selfless action as she was reborn as Abe, a usagi kami.

Although she was a particularly talented kami, she was unsettled and didn't enjoy a particular facet of the usagi community, being their communal structure. She felt that the family she had become a part of was a facade, and wanted desperately to know about her life as a human. Since she had become a kami she forgot about her human life. While it was certainly in Abe's best interest not to know about her human life and she was told as such, she distrusted the blanket statement without any reasoning behind it. She acted out, attempting to gain what she wanted. When she eventually determined that she would never be told, she ran away from the usagi kami village, literally and figuratively burning every bridge as she left to try and become a rogue kami.

The Okami, who are the ancient kami that created Japan, decided to punish Abe by forcing her to become a shinigami. Being a shinigami is a job most individuals do not elect to do, and is rather a dark and bitter task. When transformed, Abe was put under the care of an elder shinigami named Kuro. Her very first assignment was to take the soul of her surviving sister, and when Abe laid her eyes on her old face she immediately recognized her. She refused to commit the act, but Kuro forced her to do so rather cruelly. He took quite a bit of delight when she actually took her first soul, assuming that it would make Abe more comfortable with taking others, but Abe never seemed to acclimate. When Kuro found that motivating Abe was difficult, he awakened her memories and forced her to relive them for three days straight. Anytime she stepped out of line, he would remind her that he would do the same thing again.

After awhile Abe decided to place a facade of sarcasm and playfulness on. She did her job as she was told to do, never complaining, but her demeanor made her an annoyance to the other shinigami, particularly Kuro. Most shinigami are very serious and somewhat twisted, because becoming used to reaping souls tears at one's heart and ability to have compassion. Abe decided to treat it as a game, and refused to give up her playfulness despite suggestions to the contrary. As a result she was often beaten or tortured for committing minor infractions, but she took each without ever letting Kuro see her cry.

One day, Kumo, a young demon boy, came across Abe while he was walking around Tokyo. Kumo was then eight-years-old. When he happened upon Abe by mere circumstance, the little girl was harvesting a soul. Since he
