Doesn't it take from 5 up to 15 years for HIV to turn into actual AIDS, though? More often than not do symptoms even stay completely unnoticed until the later stages. What I'm trying to say is, they probably shouldn't be beating themselves up over not noticing this.

And, I feel like when someone places a character outside of their character gender/sex they do see them as trans. I would argue that with the way our society is setup around the stigmatic system gender and sex that's being trans is. Being outside of society's "canon".
