Of course, while I've only actually played to Zelda games, and both of them were pretty old, it seems to me that there are always plenty of other items lying around that can do some serious damage in the sword's stead, too. So I'm sure she'll be fine. Besides, she has those neat goggles!

You can! It involves some really cool glitches and exploits. It ends at the last boss, though, because you need to hit him with the sword during one of the phases.
The original Zelda can be done swordless. .. and I think Ocarina, too... In most, you either start with the sword, or it triggers a progression event.

The way I ran my swordless run was, I go into the final boss room without a sword, die (at this point many consider the swordless run to be complete), Continue, go back and pick up the wooden sword, then finish the game.
