A highly respected and cunning Afrika Korps officer, Generalmajor Helmreich is known as "the other Desert Fox," and was Arnold Messler's superior in Africa, as well as his first love. He appears in the story The Sands of Sorrow.
A boisterous and cheerful fox who strongly dislikes the Nazis, he is rumored to have at least one Jewish relative (through marriage rather than blood) although he neither confirms nor denies it. It caused a minor scandal and would've likely eventually resulted in his dismissal (or worse) had he not been killed in action.
Helmreich followed Rommel's edict that the war in Africa was the "war without hate," and, orders from Germany be damned, refused to commit war crimes such as abusing and killing prisoners and taking advantage of the African people.
Despite being fat, he was also physically active and often personally led his troops in an attempt to emulate Rommel. Although Messler was in love with him, and Helmreich was beginning to return the feeling, the two were never able to experience one another's affection due to Helmreich dying in battle despite Messler's effort to save him.
