the best place to start is deciding what style you want to go with, then figuring out color. with steampunk, you want to stay closer to turn-of-the-century metal colors, and woodgrain patterns. with Sci-fi mods, the sky is the limit on colors. if you want to do just a cool paint mod, there are several dipping methods you can easily find on youtube. most work pretthy good and you can get some really neat swirling effects.

i use Krylon, or Ace hardware paint. the ace paint is good for base coating, krylon for everything else. When i am doing multiple colors, i generally take apart what im painting to get cleaner lines, if your not good at taking things apart, you can always take pictures of what your working on to get it back together. then its just a matter of finding the accents you want to add. For the accents, i use E-6000. comes in clear, white, and black. when melding together two loose pieces, I ues LocTite 2part puddy or JB weld. both work well. everything else i just use various screws. if you want to keep an older style look, there are standard screw head pins you can find in the scrapbooking section of hobby lobby. Look in the Tim Holtz or Spare Parts sections at your local hobby store or a hobby lobby to find them and other really cool stuff.
