Its an incredibly self aware parody game that takes many tropes, cliches and steriotypes from rpgs and jrpgs (and even anime in general really) and mixes in all that with its own whacky sense of humor and oddball characters and also has a system that dynamically tracks your actions and alters dialogue and gameplay accordingly.
The showpiece of the game is the enemy encounters, most are pretty silly and you can choose to kill them or perform other actions that will have varying results depending on the enemy type with the enemies themselves starting up conversations with you and in some cases you can flirt with them or simply hug them to "defeat' them or do other random weird things.
The game regularly messes with you and it even alters things like the user interface itself as well as pretending to do one thing while its secretly doing another all for the purposes of comedy. its a very funny game at times.

Well it depends if you've played rpgs before I guess. You have a set number of health and you'll get bits of gear that give you more health and defense and you'll find weapons to equip and replace and you'll need to manage your health items for when you need to heal. It's all basic rpg inventory stuff in that sense.
But you only really need weapons if you want to play aggressively as every enemy can be dealt with without fighting back technically.
I'd say the only tricky part is that the combat involves enemies throwing mini games at you where you either have to dodge projectiles or do some basic platforming. Very simple stuff but if you're terrible at that kind of reactionary gameplay it might give you more trouble.

The reason I passed on Undertail before even realizing what it was (I actually saw the trailer on Video games awesome) was it looks just like every RPG of this type, those are usually punishingly hard to play and I find myself unable to keep myself interested. Especially because I don't enjoy reading and these games require a ton of it.
I may see if someone has let's played it. I like all the concepts but I have been disappointed by amazing games that were too hard to play so many times it just makes me jaded on anything like that. I hate when a game has so much potential for being fun but they make it only for hardcore gamers who want punishingly hard games.

You can actually not kill anyone there, the game is designed to fit every person who would play it since it's kind of unfair of you're not some bullet dodging fanatic like what the creator himself said. The plot is the main endeavor of the game ;3
