Deciding on the body shape of adult Amy was somewhat of a mental struggle. But once I decided to trust my intuition, I was really happy with the result.
Panel #1: The original idea basically followed the rules of the Sega-style template. The emphasis would be on the size of the head, the hair, and the facial features of Amy's adulthood while the body would be secondary. The implication of her cartoony, noodle based body is her being petite and wanting to keep the Sonic-style charm. The biggest roadblock that kept me from initially going the humanoid body route is due to the male characters. I kept thinking how awkward and inconsistent it would be if I given her a human-like body then placing her next to the male cast like Sonic. I don't see many artists give Sonic, Knuckles, etc. human-like bodies...and the ones I did see pushed it too far that it took away the charm. For example, Sonic's head pasted on a body shape similar to The Hulk, XD. So I kept the original look for 1 year before having the courage to change it.
Panel #2: What motivated me to change Amy's body shape to be human-like is thinking about the Sonic characters in general. Despite their animal features and cartoony shape, they are human in every other way; mentally, emotionally, etc. so they are on equal standing rather than less than like animals in real life. I think it makes sense to take it to the next level by having their body shape similar to humans. With the pure petite body shape, I solely focused on the aspects of Amy being very active and adventurous. I kept this idea for 6 months before deciding to change it one more time.
