Redesigning the hair/quills was the most challenging process of drawing the adult version of Amy. I looked up various sources to help me in my quest including looking at a hair magazine with over 200 hairstyles of different lengths. I went through a full pack of paper drawing them, but after all those hours spent...the conclusion came to something quite simple. However, I have redrawn the notable hairstyles I went through before choosing the final choice. This is part 1.

Panel 1: The most common route I see artists take when drawing Amy's hair/quills is either keeping it as it is or lengthen it. On the right side, I also followed this route but ended up not liking it. I felt Amy's hairstyle should be a little more distinct.

Panel 2: In Idea #1, I was contemplating whether or not Amy should have curly hair. The idea of curly hair is distinctive and gives emphasis to Amy's femininity, so I sketched this style on Amy several times. I thought this will be the one until I realized it looks too much like human hair. So I ended up discarded it and try another with Idea #2. The feathery/flip style with sharp tips seems like the best compromise between aspects of her being a hedgehog and it behaving like human hair. It seemed like a good way to convey Amy's spunky side, but the appeal for this style ended rather quickly.

Panel 3: Idea #3 was almost Amy's finalized hairstyle. The concept came from looking at pictures of hearts, which I thought the idea was perfect for Amy; a heart-shaped ponytail tied with the same ribbon she wore in Sonic CD. Yet, the dilenma came of desiring for Amy's hair to be loose and also thinking it makes her look less adult.

Panel 4: This is the beginning of the intense struggle for a good hairstyle for adult Amy. The only thing I was thinking of when I sketched Idea #4 is Amy's quirkiness, but other than that it's very random.
