Much like his counterpart, this version of Spike has always been by Stardust’s side since pretty much day one. He accompanies her on every mission and provides quick and able support with his ability to summon items on the fly from the Canterlot armory via scrolls. Also like his counterpart they share a strong connection together, much like that of a sibling bond. He looks up to Stardust, greatly admiring her ferocity and cunning nature, and Stardust similarly admiring his tenacity and resourcefulness.
He is not aware of the circumstances of how exactly he came to be in Stardusts care, and being partly to blame for that circumstance, Stardust has always viewed his upbringing as being one of her utmost priorities in life. It is because of this that she originally wanted him to have nothing to do with her career (despite his begging,) but eventually gave in when she began to see how capable he was.
Soooo yeah. That’s this universes Spike for ya. Usually this is the part where I ask you guys to suggest names but like I said beforehand, ‘Spike’ would fit this version him just fine so someone would need to suggest something REALLY good for me to reconsider. Until then he will simply be Spike.
EDIT: OKAY, so, while I haven’t really heard any names I want to use, I have heard one suggestion, and just so that there’s something to distinguish this spike from canon spike, this spike will officially be known as “Spyke.”
'Bout time we get him :P. I like it, and yeah, Spike does seem to fit, but seeing as the others have different names, I think he should to. How about Thorn? Considering Stardust's personality (if she named him in this AU, too), something 'awesome' would be expected.

Fang, Blaze, Smoke, Raptor, Spines, or if you want to go with something else just find a gemstone that fits him. Spike was named after a feature commonly found on dragons, so why not name him after something he loves to eat.

Well, other than people wanting to rename him... his own canon's actually had him able to summon physical objects with only his fire, so... while I really (and I mean REALLY) love the way he's portrayed, and don't honestly mind his name being changed to Flint, I just have to suggest giving him (at least) the ability to store small objects with only his fire (no scroll needed)
But, of course, that's only a concern if he's going to be used in some capacity in your work, or other's work based on yours

Well, there's two issues with that though: One he only summoned a small paper card, and unless I see him summon something larger I don't have much reason to believe he is capable of doing that. And two, even if he could summon anything on a whim the weapons from the armory are registered and must be summoned from an official canterlot signed scroll, he can't simply pull out weapons from there willy-nilly.

well, you forget that he did that when he was still a hatchling (much younger than you portray him, here) , and which is why I said "small objects" like a number of crossbow bolts, not any object, like what you thought I meant, and secondly, surely he could have a weapon or two of his own, outside of the royal crown's armory... like perhaps he has a secret or two, like most non-1-dimensional characters

He's not really that much older, I just drew him taller to keep him within a reasonable height relation to all the other characters who are now taller due to being depicted as anthro. If I were drawing them as ponies, Spike would be his usual show depicted height :p
Also, he wouldn't summon any small weapons via flame because he doesn't need to, he already has claws and the ability to breathe fire. The scrolls are just a means of bypassing the act of carrying bulky items such as the crossbow which he only uses if a problem can't be dealt with at short range.

so you have him around the age of the CMC (about 7) and doing all those things... alright...
And you're telling me it wouldn't be useful to have the ability to store small objects like pieces of paper or crossbow bolts (like you ignored) without them either taking up space or having to be summed via another scroll... because I imagine him being able to take out his crossbow, firing the first shot that gets summoned with it, and then just blowing his fire and getting bolt after bolt as he needs them... but that clearly wouldn't be useful because, as you've said, he's got claws and fire breath

I don't believe the ages of any of the younger characters have ever officially been stated? Or any of the characters for that matter. I always saw Spike and the CMC being around twelve years old. This version of Spike could be 13-14.
I'll summarize the basic concept as I have it right now: - He can summon things from the armory if needed via a scroll. (He needs to write out each scroll beforehand to keep tabs on what they plan to take because the items are registered within the armory) - He can send back certain items after the mission by re-igniting them (like the crossbow), while other items are one time use items (potions, bombs, replacement wands, etc.)
This drawing was the best way I thought I could depict this concept aesthetically so if certain details aren't seen there it doesn't mean they aren't there or that I have not thought of it (like the crossbow having bolts already included with it). Plus, and I probably should have mentioned this beforehand, this version of Spike was trained differently than canon Spike, meaning different abilities and skill sets.
So please just trust me on this, it will all be further explained as we go on >3>

and yeah, I know... it's just that Spike hardly ever gets the good side of things, and I really liked the idea of him being able to summon things on his own without a scroll or anything like that, like a secret compartment that can hold anything and keep things completely secret from anyone else that tried to search him... and the additional character development of having some secrets to him, you know?
well, I'm just going by what the audition script for Apple bloom ( http://www.equestriadaily.com/201
Personally I don't think he needs secrets to make him more a interesting or well rounded character. I'm pretty sure he being the only one with this ability, the fact that he willingly puts himself in harms way, his dragon nature or simply his personality are more than enough to make him a unique character on his own.
