Except they're still bound by the laws of the US, since that's where they and their servers are based. Though I don't believe it was something they cared much about until they merged the teen grid onto the main grid. Then it became an issue.

Legally I think it's OK in the USA to have virtual underage adult content as long as it a) isn't real, and b) you're not presenting it as real (one cases made a public policy argument on the grounds that it encouraged a market in real content), but Linden Labs may be concerned about inadvertently exposing minors to content that people believe they shouldn't see, and perhaps state obscenity law - to say nothing of other countries in which they operate, some of which do outlaw content involving fictional people (i.e. humans).
Even where not illegal, it's just bad press with no real upside for them. Sadly, that is the argument for most forms of censorship.
