I bought a pink chill towel the other day.. I love pink. When the cashier rang me up, she began to laugh and ask if I was serious. I laughed too and said I loved pink. She frowned and said "That's alright, I guess. " I asked what her problem was with myself buying it and she said " Pink is a girl's color. " it was beyond playful. Her tone said it all and she wasn't smiling anymore. I laughed again, shook my head " And what is that supposed to mean? You're telling me it's strange that I want this? That pink isn't for me because I'm not like you? " she didn't have an answer. She just looked uncomfortable, and glazed in the eyes. So opinionated even when their stare looks dead and the words don't make any sense.

We do not live in a world where colors are for one. We do not live in a world where activities are for one. We do not live in a world where we cut up thin pieces of life and all it's pleasures, happiness and spectrums, then say " This is mine. That is yours. " We are better than this. WE ARE BETTER THAN THIS.

While it was somewhat offensive to you, I rather tend to feel sad for that person, cooped up in her narrow world of awfully limited shades of colors.
I'm not sure if I make any sense, but rest assured you are not alone.

We can feel sorry and sad for those individuals however for some, they are unaware of that narrow world they are existing in. We can feel sorry  but we certainly cannot excuse the limitation. The offense is still given.

The point I had in mind is that it's not an offense that can be answered in kind.
She probably thinks she was doing you a favor by pointing it out.
And it takes an awful lot of dedication, time and energy to show these people the way over and out the walls of their preconception.

You seem the kind to use the offense as another emotion in the blender that feeds your artistic drive, in which case it's all fine.
But should it just sit around and rot in the back of your mind, getting rid of it becomes the best option, imho anyway.

It could not be answered in kind to the individual indeed. However it has been given purpose. The essence of the moment has been expressed. The emotion, the response, the feelings behind the act exists outside that single interaction. Could I show these people more than their limits? No, no. That falls to them as well.

Some argue that to even bother with making a remark on such things is simply screaming into the void and without purpose. What might be more dreadful? Speaking of the conclusion and drawing from it, or pretending it never began at all? Things rot for some. For others they serve as examples.  Perception as it were is key, aye? I thank you for your time.

And I thank you for your explanation in ever so carefully and precisely chosen words.

Pink is a lovely color.

I don't see why it should be for one gender. :B

I'll be honest; I personally don't care for the color pink.  It's not because I feel it's a "girl's" color, or that it's even ugly.  It's, oddly enough, the smell I have that's a mental association to pink, especially that shade that's just a smidge lighter than "bubblegum".  I get this smell associated of some foul-smelling chalk from back when my age was just a single digit and I was living up in southern Virginia.

This does not excuse the mentioned cashier, however.

I'm glad you took a stand, didn't remain silent.  At the very least, the encounter will be remembered by her.
