The Storyteller's Apprentice
A quick bit of background - I was sent the files for this picture, under the condition that I would write a story for it. I was told the title, and that Megan was supposed to tell Liane a secret, and left to go on from there. So I decided that this was the perfect opportunity to build on some ideas I've already had concerning Megan's childhood. But it's just supposed to be a little fantasy. Or, perhaps, some far-off alternate reality.

I hope you guys will like it and, Liane, I hope this isn't too far out of line with what you had in mind!

Megan Bryar belongs to me.

Megan and Liane had been best friends for as long as either of them could remember. Their parents were neighbors and had, themselves, been close friends in college, and Megan and Liane had played together since they could walk. Now ten years old, they were veterans of a thousand school-yard games and seasoned explorers of the woods that lay just behind their neighborhood. They knew of secret pools and hidden clearings that even their equally adventurous class-mates were ignorant of. These shared secrets and being the only two rabbits in a class of fifty had only brought them closer together.

Today was the first day of August. School was going to start again in just a couple of weeks, and so they were determined to make the most of what free time they had left. They met in front of Megan's house that morning after their parents left for work. It was a breathlessly hot day and the narrow city streets shimmered in the heat, even though it wasn't yet nine o'clock. Megan gave Liane a big smile as her friend came running up, long ears and pigtails bouncing behind her.

“You wanna go swimming?” Megan said.

Liane paused, then shook her head.

“I didn't bring my suit,” she said.

“Let's go sit by the pond anyway. It'll be cooler there and we won't have to worry about my brother listening in,” Megan said.

It was a long walk down to their secret pond. They had to go down past the tavern and out through a secret hole in the city wall, and then pass through one of old Mr. McGregor's fields that between the city and the woods. They paused just inside the fence-row and Liane climbed up on the wooden gate to look around.

“Do you see him?” Megan said.

John McGregor was an ancient fox who was famous in town for his lettuce and his blackberries, and he had never forgiven either of them for stealing some of his berries when they were six.

“All clear,” Liane said at last, “Are you ready?”

“Try and catch me,” Megan said.

They took off running across the field, each careful to choose a path through the rows of lettuce. Halfway across the field, they heard a shout from behind them and Megan looked back to see farmer McGregor shaking his hoe at them as he entered the field from the other side.

“This way,” Liane said.

She grabbed Megan's hand and, together, they leaped over a low hedge and ran down the steep bank that marked one of the borders of the McGregor farm. They splashed through a shallow stream at the bottom of the hill and then ducked, safe, into the woods beyond.

“You think he'll tell on us? Megan said.

“Nah. Mom said she used to run through his fields when she was a kitten, too, and last time he came by to complain, she told him to lighten up,” Liane said.

Megan giggled and nodded.

“He should, definitely. I wonder what he was like as a kid,” she said.

“I think people still lived in caves back then, didn't they?” Liane said.

The woods were cool and pleasantly dim and scented with pine and leaf-mold. There were mushrooms and acorns underfoot and there were a few small, purple flowers which Megan plucked and wove into a bracelet. Birds sang in the trees, and they stopped and watched a small, feral squirrel leap from branch to branch as it made its way to some secret rendezvous of its own.

When they reached the pond, they kicked off their sandals and sat on a large rock by the water's edge to dabble their feet in the shallows. They skipped a few pebbles across the surface of the water. This was a trick Liane had taught to Megan, and one which she'd always been better at. She could get a pebble to skip five or six times, easy, to Megan's two or three. When they ran out of pebbles, they just sat and splashed idly in the water, watching the ripples bounce off the far bank.

Gradually, over the course of perhaps a half an hour, Megan scooted closer to Liane until they were sitting next to each other. Very shyly, Megan reached out and touched Liane's hand.

“Liane,” she said.

“That's me, the one and only,” Liane said.

“Can I tell you something?” Megan said.

“I'm all ears,” Liane said, and she giggled as she draped her long ears across her shoulders. Megan blushed and she paused for so long that Liane nudged her.

“Go on,” Liane said.

“I... like you,” Megan said.

“I know that silly. We've been friends for--”, Liane began, but she stopped when Megan shook her head.

“No. I mean I like you. As more than just a friend,” Megan said.

“You mean, like... girlfriends?” Liane said.

“I'd like to. I mean... if you want...that is, I hope--” Megan said.

Stumbling over her words, she stopped and looked down at their rocky perch, afraid of what she might see if she looked at Liane's face. But Liane just reached over and squeezed her hand.

“I think I like you, too,” Liane said.
